Back to School Anxiety
  • Talk with your child about the new school year. Discuss any issues your child may have about making new friends, moving up a grade, or having a new teacher. Shopping for new school shoes and school supplies is a good way to prepare children for the upcoming school year. Establish a routine. Set realistic times for having meals, going to bed, and getting up. This makes it easier for everyone and avoids early morning hassles. Create opportunities for your child to get together with some of the children in their grade. Their best friend might not be in the same class so encourage more than one "best friend". Review procedures for arriving and departing from school. If applicable, teach your child the proper way to get on and off of a bus and how to cross the road safely. If your child is allowed to ride his or her bike to school, review Bike Safety and the rules of the road. Have your child take responsibility for some of the planning and everyday chores such as lunch preparation. Fuel your child's mind with good nutrition. Healthy snacks and lunches are an important part of overall health. Here are some snacks that will give them nutrition and natural energy throughout the school day.

Back-To-School Safety Checklist
When you drop off your child at school, use this checklist to make sure these hidden hazards aren't waiting to cause injury or death.
  • Drawstrings on Jackets and Sweatshirts
There should be no drawstrings on hoods or around the neck. Drawstrings at the waist or bottom of jackets should extend no more than 3 inches to prevent catching in car and school bus doors or getting caught on playground equipment.
  • Loops on Window Blind Cords
Cut the loop and attach separate tassels to prevent entanglement and strangulation in window blind cords. One child a month strangles and dies in the loop of a window blind cord.
  • Bike Helmets
Buy a helmet that meets safety standards and insist that your children wear the helmet each time they ride their bike. About 900 people, including more than 200 children, are killed annually in bicycle-related incidents, and about 60 percent of these deaths involve a head injury. More than 500,000 people are treated annually in U.S. hospital emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries. Research indicates that a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 85 percent.
  • Playgrounds
Check the surfaces around playground equipment at schools and parks to make sure there is a 12-inch depth of wood chips, mulch, sand, or pea gravel, or mats made of safety-tested rubber or fiber material to prevent head injury when a child falls. Each year, more than 200,000 children go to U.S. hospital emergency rooms with injuries associated with playground equipment. Most injuries occur when a child falls from the equipment onto the ground.

Mayor Kelly, Councilmember Benanav launch new campaign for biking, walking in Saint Paul
The campaign kicks off both the start of the school year and the international ProBike/ProWalk conference that begins Tuesday, Sept. 3 at the downtown Radisson Riverfront Hotel. As a state legislator, Kelly has been a long-time advocate for pedestrian safe and wrote the law requiring drivers to stop for pedestrians crossing at corners. The law makes it easier for kids to walk to school and for adults to walk to work, shopping and errands. Statistics:
    • In 2000, nearly 44,600 children, ages 14 and under, suffered motor vehicle related pedestrian injuries in the United States. Between 25 and 50 percent of child pedestrian injuries required hospital admission. In 2000, 43 percent of traffic related child pedestrian deaths occurred between 4 and 8 p.m.

Back-to-School Safety: Orthopaedic Surgeons remind parents and community officials to inspect neighborhood and schoolyard playgrounds
ROSEMONT, Ill. - With summer ending and school just around the corner, children will be returning to recess - and schoolyard playgrounds. The number of playground injuries each year are high: according to the U.S. Product Safety Commission, in the year 2000 there were more than 541,792 playground-related injuries treated in hospital emergency rooms and doctor's offices. Not only are children sustaining injuries that, in many cases, can be prevented, it costs the U.S. over $11 billion in medical, work loss, pain, suffering and legal liability. Most injuries occur when a child falls from the equipment onto the ground. Often they are hurt not only by the fall, but by being struck by the equipment as they fall. "The type of surface on the playground is the most important factor in reducing the number and severity of injuries due to falls," explained Vernon T. Tolo, MD, president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at Children's in Los Angeles. "Look for softer surfaces such as engineered wood mulch, shredded tires, or cushioned rubber safety surfacing. Asphalt, concrete, soil, packed dirt, grass and turf are not recommended," said Dr. Tolo. "And, the greater the height of the equipment, the deeper the surfacing material depth must be to provide enough impact absorption in a fall."
