About Buyer's Guide - Academic Software

Desktop publishing software is expensive. One attractive alternative to paying full price is to purchase academically priced versions, often at one-half to one-third the price of the full retail version. Available to students, faculty, and educational institutions, there are advantages and disadvantages to taking this route for individuals building a desktop publishing arsenal. Learning Desktop Publishing Learn desktop publishing through formal and informal classes, seminars, schools, email lists, videos, PDF documents, newsletters, and magazines online and off. What is the Back to School Program?
The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), a bipartisan organization providing services to state lawmakers, launched the Back to School program to involve state legislators across the country in civic education. The Back to School Program encourages state lawmakers, schedules permitting, to visit classrooms at all levels and talk to students about what it's like to be a legislator: the processes, the pressures, and the debate, negotiation and compromise. Legislators can contribute to the quality of civic education by sharing their experiences and explaining America's tradition of representative democracy to students. The Back to School Program is also an opportunity for legislators to observe what is going on in schools and to let students know that their ideas count. When does Back to School take place?

Just for Teachers
Back-to School Ideas for the Classroom
"A hundred years from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove, but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child." Major Objective: Children will become acquainted with their classmates, teacher, and total school environment during the first weeks of school.
Things to Do
Children feel special when they take something home on the first day of school. Making a first day booklet is lots of fun and a great way to share school with those at home. Getting to Know you! is a sackful of fun! Give each child a paper sack to take home. Tell the children to fill their sacks with objects that tell something about themselves. For example, crayons might say, "I like to draw and do other types of art," and a tennis ball says, "I'm a good tennis player." On the day the children bring their filled sacks to school. give them a chance to share their sacks' contents with the class. Students love knowing about their teachers, too, so go ahead and take your own turn. It might be a good idea to prepare your sack so you may share it with the children on the day you pass out their empty sacks. This will help in getting the idea across to the kids.

Dell Welcomes Teachers Back With the Web
(SEPTEMBER-2000) Student's and teachers heading back to school this month aren't alone. The Dell Computer Corporation will also find its way into classrooms across the nation via Dell's Web School. The Web School, a virtual classroom recently launched, enables teachers the use of the Internet for research, lesson plan development and classroom instruction. It was developed by Dell after a recent Dell-commissioned survey of third, eighth and 12th-graders. The study found students are more likely to learn about the Internet from parents and use it at home than they are to learn about it from teachers in school. The study also found students are predisposed to use the Internet for education and research. Located on the Internet at www.dell.com/thewebschool , helps prepare students for success in the digital world. The Web School includes a self-paced Know the Net course which helps beginning Internet users expand their knowledge of the Internet and its classroom uses. The School also contains links to useful teacher resources such as the Gateway to Educational Materials, ePALS Classroom Exchange and Blackboard.com. Educators who complete the Know the Net Challenge for Teachers and submit a survey by November 30th will be entered in a contest to win a Dell Latitude notebook computer. Supply Lists:
Even if your school doesn't allow you to THINK about hammering a nail in the wall, a tool kit is as indispensable as one for the home. Tools need to still be safe and usable, of course, but save money by rounding up some older, less-used items from home or from your friends and family. Hammer, pliers, phillips and slot head screwdrivers (including micro ones for eye glasses), nails, a small assortment of screws, small can of oil or WD-40, work gloves, handful of clothespins, a few rags; you get the idea. This isn't Tool Time, just a back-up supply of essentials.
For office supplies, here's a tip; think medical. Drug companies spend tons of money on junk to give to doctors and their staffs, so if you know someone who works for one, they probably can load you up with sticky notes of all sizes, pens, pencils, clips, note pads, thermometers, clocks and rulers. Also, round up large paper clips or (our favorite) wooden clothespins for clipping stacks of papers together. Stationery should include thank you notes and envelopes for field trip or visiting speaker follow-ups. Back up the required ball of string with fishing line for hanging objects "invisibly".

PRODUCT REVIEW
Teachers can go back to school with Tiny Red Book
By Heather Wardell
September. Time to go back to school. Groaning and sighing all across the world, some of it even from the students! This teacher, however, is really looking forward to getting back into her classroom and seeing her students again. Knowing that I have Tiny Red Book ready and able to keep track of my students' performance, grades, and attendance just makes me even more ready to go. Tiny Red Book (at http://www.tiny-red-book.com ) is, quite simply, a program that all Palm handheld-enabled teachers need. This one program incorporates a very customizable grade book, attendance tracking, and a place to track student behavior. It has a small footprint on the handheld (only 133KB), easy data entry and editing, and a nearly foolproof way to access your data on the desktop. The old paper grade book
If the old paper grade book was good enough for generations, why not now? Because Palm OS grading software, when done right, simplifies a teacher's life. Students' grades can be calculated on the spot, making impromptu parent-teacher conferences far easier. Comments about student behavior, attitude, and performance can also be stored safely away right when they occur to the teacherno more trying to remember the comment until paper and pencil present themselves. When I first found Tiny Red Book and downloaded the demo, I must admit that I was doubtful. The description of the program certainly made it sound wonderful, but the price seemed too low to be realistic. How could it cost only $25 to do everything for me except actually decide on the grades for the students?

Now it was time to read the manual. The user manual (available online at http://www.tiny-red-book.com/screenshots.html ) shows that you can, in fact, enter data through the Desktop application rather than directly through Tiny Red Book. As I have a Microsoft Word file with all of my students' names, I spent ten minutes copying and pasting so that I had all 165 students in Tiny Red Book. This is a huge benefit of this application, as students can be easily added to or removed from classes, or moved from one class to another, if necessary. Memos are created in the Unfiled category but can be moved into any category without affecting the program. However, the class itself must first be created in Tiny Red Book or manually added to the "Classes" memo. Otherwise, the program cannot recognize the memo as being data. Day to day use

An effective, well-orchestrated training program, led by Tri-Electronics, Inc. system facilitators, helped Johnston and his colleagues quickly adapt to the multimedia learning environment. Hobart media center personnel, who serve as system gatekeepers, were the first to learn the system. Though tentative at first, Media Director Dorothy Hausmann, who's been an educator for 32 years, was highly in favor of bringing the new technology into her school. "I was ready to tackle the technology," she said. "The training was very thorough, and I was surprised by how user- friendly the SmartSystem is. In just one week I was able to gain a full understanding of the system's capabilities and how to use it." Other faculty members, trained in small groups, were shown how to bring media programs into their classrooms using the handheld, infrared remote control. They were also taught how to submit lesson plans using the system's scheduling computer.
