Back to School!: Motivating Teachers Ideas from the Trenches by: Bobbi Gray Introduction to the Industry
Teachers are naturally in the business of motivating. Beginning a journey in teaching normally is based on intrinsic motivators, one of the most important motivators being the desire to make a difference. Teachers are one of the first lines of shaping the minds of those who will further carry the responsibility to build nations and build companies. Unfortunately, the goal to make a difference in the nation's youth is often not enough to provide the most effective reward for members of an industry that historically has been a provider of low salaries and very often low benefits and perks. Schools are now paying more and more attention to the needs of their teachers as fewer people are entering the field and more are leaving for better paying professions.

Letting GO Archives from: LettingGO, September, 1998 Back-to-School Hints for Teachers Excerpts from the NSP's Teacher Brochure Teachers are a very important part of a child's environment. If the child stutters, the teacher's understanding and support can be critical in determining what the child's experience with stuttering will be. As a teacher you spend a great deal of time being with children. You can surmise much of what the child feels in response to stuttering. Children who stutter are normal children except that they have trouble getting words out. Everything we know about the problem points to neurological factors that cause the inability of these children to speak fluently. There is nothing inherently wrong or bad about stuttering. The children struggle against the condition in which they find themselves. How comfortable children are with themselves in their environments, and what their attitude toward their stuttering is, will have much to do with how much the stuttering affects their young lives. If we took at stuttering in contrast to some other disabilities in children, we can get a good picture of the position the child finds himself or herself in. Children want to be like their peers and struggle to be like them. Avoidance behavior often results from this desire to conform to these self-imposed expectations. We acknowledge that teaching is a phenomenal task. The needs of your students, at any given time, are likely to exceed your ability to meet them. The suggestions listed below are not a simple recipe. We know that you will do your best to apply them to children.

Villagers bring errant teachers back to school By Our Staff Correspondent GULBARGA June 28. In a rare exhibition of unity and resilience, the people of a tiny village, Tarnalli, near the industrial township of Shahabad, have shown how to mend the ways of errant teachers of a government primary school in their village and make them to attend classes regularly. Most of the families in the village either work in agriculture fields or in stone quarries in Shahabad. The primary school in Tarnalli seldom operated regularly and functioned as per the whims and fancy of the three teachers working there. One of the two anganwadi kendras established in the village is also not functioning. A junior resource person in a voluntary organisation, Mahila Samukya, Rasheeda Sheikh, who is involved in implementing literacy programmes and also those to bring down the dropout rate in schools, discovered the malady in Tarnalli during her chance visit to the village.According to Ms. Sheikh, the dropout rate in the school was one of the highest in the region, as the school remained closed most of the days. She said that complaints by villagers to higher-ups in the Education Department about the primary school were of no help. Though the teachers lived in nearby Shahabad, they seldom conducted classes.

British Columbia Teachers' Federation NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 3, 2002
Teachers welcome students back to school
Teachers often say that they celebrate New Year twice a year: in January and in September. Today thousands of teachers province-wide are wishing a warm welcome to about 600,000 students returning for a new year of learning. Today the B.C. Teachers' Federation unveiled a new wall calendar for 2002-03 that will be hung in schools around the province. It bears the headline: "Teachers are proud to work for excellent schools in healthy communities." "That's our theme for this year," said BCTF President Neil Worboys. "The teachers of B.C. are proud of our profession and proud of the work we do with students. We're working for a well-rounded school system that fosters academic excellence, artistic exploration, athletic prowess, technological skill, and good citizenship." Worboys vowed that teachers will do their utmost to ensure success for every student, but provincial government cuts will make that more difficult. "This fall our school system is facing $210 million in funding cuts, the loss of almost 2,000 full-time equivalent teachers, and 45 schools closed," Worboys said. "We're going to see larger classes, less course choices, fewer specialist teachers, and less support for students with special needs. These are unprecedented changes that will undoubtedly have a serious impact, especially in rural B.C."

HomePage English Education in China January Teachers sent back to school in nationwide training plan CUI YU China's education department has launched a massive project to re-train teachers across the country. Teachers will be trained under a new qualification system to be set up this year, which aims to spur teachers on to improve their general competence and codes of ethics. All teachers who work in kindergartens, primary, middle and vocational schools and colleges and universities will be required to update their skills, said Minister of Education Chen Zhili at a national conference on upgrading teachers' competence, held yesterday in Beijing. China first issued the Teachers Law and Teachers Qualification Regulations in 1993 to try to improve standards. Statistics from the Ministry of Education indicate that nearly 95 per cent of teachers in primary schools, 83 per cent in junior middle schools and 64 per cent in senior middle schools received State-set qualifications under these regulations. Those remaining teachers and new recruits will be required to take exams under the new qualification system. On its part, the State will improve teachers' living and working conditions in a bid to motivate existing teachers and attract new recruits, said Chen.

WHAT CAN TEACHERS DO?
Is creation really all that important, even when you teach subjects other than sciences? Mr. Bill Jack The issue of creation vs. evolution is crucial in every subject. You see, how you answer the question of origins will effect everything else you do. It determines how you view history, the author's perspective in literature and how you look at yourself. If students are taught that they are nothing more than products of random chance evolutionary processes, then both their moral foundation and how they view themselves is destroyed. As a Christian teacher, how can you not teach the truth?
