Then Bahamian culture suddenly underwent an abrupt change beginning in 1647 when English Puritans settled on the island of Eleuthera. It has further evolved over the past four centuries, witnessing the arrival of Bermudan slaves and free blacks, British Loyalists (accompanied by slaves) fleeing America after the War of Independence, freed Africans from slave ships, Black Seminoles from Florida, people from other Caribbean islands, as well as Chinese, Syrian and Greek immigrants. These people with their different backgrounds, traditions and beliefs shaped Bahamian culture into the unique, colorful patchwork of life and lifestyles that it is today.
The Islands Of The Bahamas gained independence from Great Britain on July 10, 1973, which is celebrated as Bahamian Independence Day. As a member of the British Commonwealth, The Islands Of The Bahamas has a symbolic link to Great Britain, with an appointed Governor-General representing the Queen of England. To see a prime example of British influence on Bahamian government, plan to see the Changing of the Guards ceremony. There is much pomp and ceremony and the Royal Bahamas Police Force Band also performs. The ceremony occurs at Government House (the office and residence of the Governor-General) in Nassau every two weeks.

Culture of the Bahamas The islands of the Bahamas have a rich sense of history, a strong national identity, and exotic locale. The Bahamian islands are similar in many ways to their neighboring Caribbean islands yet they possess a unique culture that is all their own. Religion, sports, food, and music, are all a part of the Bahamas’ culture culminating in the celebration of Junkanoo. Religion is one of the most important aspects of Bahamian life and culture. Churches have played an important role in defining the national identity and traditional values of the Bahamian people (Craton 444). All forms of Christianity are represented on the islands from Roman Catholicism to Anglican to Baptists and Methodists. The largest percentages of Christian islanders are Baptists, although there are also small Muslim and Jewish communities as well (World Info Zone). In the Bahamas there is also a small practice of Obeah, similar in style to voodoo, which has African roots mixed with Christian ideals (World Info Zone). Another important facet of Bahamian culture is the country’s passion for food. The Bahamian culture is considered to be a “food culture” (466). Bahamians have no qualms in indulging in food or sharing it with others. No gathering or celebration on the islands is

The 275,000 people who live in The Bahamas are predominantly of West African descent. Their ancestors were slaves brought to the islands to work the cotton plantations until 1834, when Britain abolished slavery in all its territories. Most white residents of are descendants of the first English settlers, who emigrated from Bermuda in 1647 to gain religious freedom. Some are also related to the Loyalists who fled the southern United States during the American Revolution and built enormous plantations here. After the abolition of slavery, life in the islands changed drastically. The plantations were dissolved, and both blacks and whites turned to the bountiful sea (sponging and fishing) or tried to farm. The lack of fertile cropland prompted the islanders to become a nation of seafarers, and Bahamians used these skills to great advantage during the days of shipwrecking, gun running, and Prohibition. Bahamians take great pride in their past , especially their names, which are indicative of a rich cultural legacy. There are many common names like the Gibsons, reputedly from Scotland; the Alburys, Malones and Russells, said to be Irish Loyalists; and the Eleuthera Bethels, who say they came with those zealous adventurers years ago. It has been said that the Bethels once spelled their name with two 'l's', but removed one because of their religious convictions. The Black Bahamians' roots go back just as far, as evidenced by the many who took the name "Rolle," after Lord Rolle, a wealthy and much-loved planter in

Country Flag ... Travel Warning History The earliest known Bahamians were Lucayans (who named the island chain after themselves), as well as Caribs and Arawaks. During his 1492 voyage to the "New" World, Christopher Columbus landed on either Guanahani (now San Salvador) or a more Southerly Island called Samana Cay. Eventually, the island group came to be known as Bahama, derived from baja mar, meaning "shallow sea" in Spanish. Caribs and Arawaks were enslaved by the newly arrived Europeans.

Marijuana use among college students all over the world has steadily increased over the past few years. This is a fact proven by a report released last year by the Harvard School of Public Health. Web search engines show a predictable rise in online searches for marijuana at the beginning of every school year, and a decline during summer, when less students are in school. Often, it ranks among the top 50 most searched for terms, consistently so at Lycos. In 1999, 'marijuana' was the #32 most popular term and in 2000 it had reached #20. The most searched for legal drug is Viagra, but the online hunt for marijuana information outranks that purple pill of pleasure three times.
