Britain and the Slave Trade

Exploring how and why the slave trade grew, this book looks at the controversial role that the West African city-states played in facilitating it. Through contemporary first-hand accounts, it reveals how the business of slavery worked and describes the lives of the slaves, their owners and traders. It shows the pivotal role that the trade played in the Industrial Revolution and the establishment of Britain as a world leader, making a direct link between the barbarities of slavery and the prosperity, culture and diversity that Britain enjoys today.
The Historical Encyclopedia of World Slavery
These two volumes, covering more than 4,000 years of world history, reflect on the impact that slavery has had on humanity.
Black People in the British Empire
The history of exploitation, oppression and underdevelopment perpetrated by British capitalism in the colonies is examined, starting with an account of the British invasion of Ireland in the 12th century and encompassing the Caribbean, India and Australasia.
Africans in Britain
A collection of essays looking at the history of African people in Britain over the past 200 years.

This group of men was unique for several reasons. First of all, many were long-time friends. Spruill, Coakley, Dorsey, and Gregory had known one another since grade school, and Spruill and Coakley's friendship extended to when the two were pre-schoolers.

http://www.usc.edu/isd/archives/la/disneyland/
As TV, radio, and newspapers throughout the country cover the grand opening of Disneyland's California Adventure, and huge crowds vie for tickets, it seems like a timely moment to take a trip down memory lane and visit another grand opening: July 17, 1955, when the first crowds of eager visitors made their way across the drawbridge of Sleeping Beauty's castle into Disneyland.
Back in the early 1950s, Anaheim was a sleepy little town, and the area around it was nothing more than acres and acres of orange groves. Enter Walt Disney, the original Imagineer. Disney's initial idea was to build a park near his Burbank studio for his employees and their families, but those plans changed over time and his dream grew.
He bought over 160 acres of those sleepy orange groves around Anaheim and set about, in 1954, building his "Magic Kingdom." Original plans called for a 9 million dollar 45-acre park, but by opening day the park covered 160 acres and had cost 17 million. Opening day was a gala affair: The ceremonies were broadcast live on ABC with Art Linkletter and Robert (Bob) Cummings as hosts, with celebrities like Ronald Reagan, and VIPs like the Governor of California also in attendance.
In 1955 the park consisted of 5 "lands": Main Street, Fantasyland, Adventureland, Frontierland, and Tomorrowland. Many of the rides were not finished. Adventureland had only one ride: the Jungle Cruise. Tomorrowland had more exhibits than rides. Landmarks we are all familiar with were absent in 1955: neither the Matterhorn nor the Monorial had been built yet. There were rides and exhibits that are now long gone: the Aluminum Hall of Fame, Rocket to the Moon, a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea exhibit (a movie tie-in!), and Space Station X-1 in Tomorrowland, and stage coach rides in Frontierland. Fantasyland had rides that are still open today: King Arthur Carousel, Snow White's Adventures, Dumbo, and the kid-terrifying Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, but was missing the Autopia (1956), and It's a Small World (1966).

In 1930, the National Pan-Hellenic Council was established at Howard University as a national coordinating body for the nine historically African American Sororities and Fraternities. Because blatant racism prevented African American students from joining or creating chapters of established sororities and fraternities on historically white campuses. African American students established their own to enhance their college experience, provide civic/philanthropic service and social support for one another and the communities in which they lived.

The Junior League World Series is the older brother of the Little League World Series held annually in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for the best teams of 12-year-olds. Like the Little League series, the Junior League World Series has a storied history. The Junior League World Series began in 1981 as a tournament for the best teams of 13-year-old players. It has blossomed to include 14-year-olds and now attracts teams from around the globe: from Europe, Latin America, the Asia-Pacific region, Canada and, of course, the United States. To date, teams have come from 25 different states in the U.S., four Canadian provinces, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Belgium, Saudi Arabia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Guam, Poland, Venezuela and Saipan. Aiea, Hawaii, made history in 2001, becoming the first team to win back-to-back world championships in the Junior League. In 2001, Aiea defeated Maracaibo, Venezuela, 6-5, in a thrilling, come-from-behind contest that was won in the bottom of the eighth inning. The year before, Aiea defeated Langley, British Columbia, Canada, in the finals, 2-1. Hawaiian teams have won the world title three times.

History of the RNB
HISTORY OF THE REGIONAL NURSING BODY At the First Conference of nursing Administrators of the West Indies held in Barbados in 1959, it was decided that there was a need for a Regional Nursing Body. This decision was taken because it was evident that (i) there existed in all the territories the same problems of recruitment, training and specialization, use of qualified staff, exchange of staff, status of profession and conditions of service, which could not be solved individually, (ii) there was need for an interchange of technical opinion and information that could bring about improvement of nursing services and maintain a high standard of efficiency throughout the Region; and (iii) such a group of technical officers working together would ultimately lead to a permanent organization being established. In order to assist nurses in the Commonwealth Caribbean to move towards the establishment of this Body, the commonwealth Foundation gave its sponsorship a Meeting held in Barbados during April, 1970. At the conclusion of the Meeting, the representatives from twelve territories in the Caribbean resolved that:-

Ellis was consecrated as a Bishop and was given the portfolio of Foreign Ministriesand regional Bishop of Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship – bahamas.
http://www.mounttabor.org/hostory_continues.htm
The Pastor Elect, the Reverend Neil C. Ellis preached the sermon entitled:: “The Mission of the Church.” At that evening’s service, midway through the service, the lights went out. The congregation came together and formed a prayer circle and when Reverend Ellis said, “In the Name of Jesus,” the lights came back on. The strange thing though was that the Convention Headquarters was the only place in the area with lights: This was an initial indication that Mount Tabor was highly favored of God. God was preparing, equipping and conditioning the spirits of the members to be pioneers in possessing the City of God and demonstrating kingdom life in its fullness for Christians. The Chapel of the Baptist Convention Headquarters was the first place of worship. It was equipped with a pulpit and forty (40) chairs but we had to provide everything else. We had no money to purchase anything but God touched the heart of the late Dr. Mitchell Cooper, pastor of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, who loaned us organ. Everything else used in the services for the first six months was on loan including musicians.
