As a couple of the previous reviewers have noted, this was supposed to be a good short read of the Balkans. Unfortunately, it was dry, dry, dry. The author loves to throw in a lot of ten dollar words in this thesis about the Balkans. One wonders what his ultimate purpose was in writing this book. I picked up a few themes from his book. One was that Ottomon Empire and the some of the Communist regimes papered over the ethnic differences. At the same time, the ethnic differences were not a big deal for most of the time in the Balkans. Neither were the religious differences, as the population tended to chose what parts of the various practices to follow.

    Manipulating History in the Balkans
    H
istory is the collective memory of a society. Individuals can be manipulated by tampering with their recollections (see Christopher Nolan’s eerie Memento , but doing this to societies is much easier. Personal memory is at least derived from human senses, unreliable as they may be. History is based on written interpretations of events that the authors most often did not witness themselves, which makes it even less reliable by several orders of magnitude. An important distinction must be made here. The society itself cannot manipulate its own memories. For this to happen, there needs to be an outside force, something above the society that would rewrite history through some form of coercion or deception: the State. Of course, a desire to control the society to such an extent that manipulating its very memories becomes

A student might say, referring to the Iliad and the Odyssey; “That kind of stuff they did then, nobody does it anymore!” This paper is written to refute such a thought. Another student might wonder: “Where could we find plain folks making up poems?” Another might quip: “As to reciting them, forget it!” Yet, are there today any tribes or nations that have such a tradition? Where could we find an uninterrupted living tradition of uneducated people or persons with only an elementary education creating their own folk poetry? The answer is: in divided Macedonia. Most of Macedonia is located in the southernmost part of Yugoslavia. The remaining parts of Macedonia are in northern Greece, Bulgaria and Albania. The material in this paper could be used for the study of geography, ancient or medieval history, folk poetry, story-telling, or for a study about heroes. Therefore, it is usable in all grades and on all levels. Objectives Can one say that the spirit of creativity lives within each nation? Can one say that “ordinary” folks (distinguished from literary, educated writers and poets) make poetry that many accept? What is one to say about the lyrics of popular songs, for example, in the “standard” pop tunes, early rock, bluegrass and “urban” folk tunes, protest songs, etc. There seems to be a spirit at work among the people seeking an outlet through song. What about poetry readings? Isn’t it true that people want to hear jokes, anecdotes or that children recite rhymes and riddles, passed on from generation to generation of children? Children teaching children: no adults involved!

    98. Serbain Intellectuals An The War In The Balkans
Argues that the Yugoslav wars can be only understood as manifestations of the Greater Serbian ideology at work.
    http://www.hr/darko/etf/prim.html
Serbian Intellectuals and the War in the Balkans
    Written by prof.dr. Igor Primoratz
    Department of Philosophy
    Hebrew University, Jerusalem 91905
ISRAEL Summary: The wars in Croatia, Bosnia, and now Kosova are stages of a single process that can only be understood as the Greater Serbian ideology at work. This ideology has been created, elaborated, and disseminated by intellectuals. The author looks into the ways in which Serbian intellectuals have been actively or passively involved in, or have related to, the current dispensation of this ideology and the war waged in order to realize it. Published in Sociological Imagination On this web with kind permission of Professor Primoratz The war in Bosnia is of a piece with the war in Croatia that preceded it, and of the war in Kosova that is being waged at the time of this writing. These are not three separate, successive wars; they are three stages of a single process of the break-up of Yugoslavia. The continuity between these stages is provided, first, by the fact that the Serbs have been a part to the conflict since its beginning and to this day. They have initiated the conflict, iposed it on one after another of their neighbors, and for the most part determined its anture and scope. Its anomalous nature and scope-anomalous, that is, against the beckground of what had been thought likely, and indeed possible, in Europe since World War II and the Nuremberg trials - is the second, related aspect of this continuity. Both can only be understood as the Greater Serbian ideology at work.

The Pentagon is sending two dozen tankkilling Apache helicopters backed by ground-based missiles and rockets to join the campaign against Serbian forces.
