This is the index site to the World of Ballroom Dancing Webring. This ring is all about Ballroom dancing (although there are not so many ballrooms about these days), it's sometimes called Standard or Modern dancing plus we have Latin-American dancing. To be specific we are concentrating on the 10 dances: Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Vienese Waltz, Cha Cha Cha, Samba, Rhumba, Paso-Doble and Jive. We are also interested in exhibition/showdance and not forgetting formation dancing This ring aims to bring together sites from all over the world where people enjoy dancing together. Some people look on this form of dancing as a Sport, others call it an Art, whatever your views I hope you find like-minded people giving their thoughts and opinions on dance and maybe some inspiration as well. Dance-related business are also very welcome on this ring. DanceSport is an area of increasing popularity, this is where competitions are organised between couples. It has a strong following internationally (is it in your country ?), it's also going to become a recognised Olmympic sport. If there are any Dancesport sites that want to join the webring they are very welcome. If you would like to submit YOUR site to the Ballroom Dancing Webring please complete the form here (or send me an e-mail at paul@pearldata.co.uk

My Ballroom Dancing Page
Welcome to my page on ballroom dancing. I've been dancing for a while now and I figured that it's about time I made up my own page devoted solely to the one form of dancing that I enjoy. You'll find various things here including links to other pages, any good information I can find, stuff I feel like putting up here for my own information so that I know where it is and don't lose it, and anything else ballroom related that I want to put here. I have a separate page for information about my ballroom dancing , both socially and competitively, in case you're interested. Hopefully you'll find at least some of the information and links here useful.
The Dances and Styles
There are two main styles of ballroom dancing American and International. American style is danced primarily in, you guessed it, America. :) It's also not as standardized as International style, which is danced just about everywhere else in the world (and in the US, too). Here in the US where I am, American style tends to be used more often for social dancing while International style tends to be used primarily in competitions. This doesn't mean that you can't compete in American style or dance International style socially. Personally, I prefer International style and dance it socially all the time. :) People will dance either American or International style socially, as they choose, and competitions normally include both styles as well, so it's good to know both styles (at least in the US).

The Ballroom Dancing Social Club
Hi Everyone- Welcome to all our new members! Here's just about everything you could possibly want to know about our club, followed by a schedule for this quarter. If you'd like to be removed from the list, please refer to the website listhost.uchicago.edu.
  • BEGINNER The beginner lessons cover one dance per two hour lesson, and the cost of these is $3 per class. They're taught by advanced members of the club and are intended as an introduction to the various dances. These require no previous experience, no rhythm (seriously, you don't need ANY), and no partner.
  • INTERMEDIATE The intermediate class is taught by a professional ballroom instructor, and is taught in a sequence of 4-5 classes. Each sequence covers two dances, and each two hour lesson is divided equally between them. The cost is $6 if you pay per class, and $5 if you pay for the entire course. We strongly recommend the second option, as the sequence is progressive and builds on the previous lessons. If you've had some dance experience in the past (not necessarily in the dances being offered) then I strongly recommend this level. These also don't require a partner. If you'd like to attend this quarter's intermediate salsa/tango class, we'll be having a couple of beginner salsa courses on 10/2 and 10/4 which should prepare you for the intermediate course.
  • OUTINGS Since the best way to learn is through practice, we offer outings every week to various salsa clubs and ballrooms around Chicago. This is a great chance to try out what you've learned, and it also gives you another perspective on dance (namely, that it's FUN!) I email people about once a week with information on that.

Home Classes Events Team ... Organization Have you ever noticed Championship Ballroom Dancing on PBS while flipping through TV stations? Did you catch "Strictly Ballroom" or "Shall We Dance" in the theatres? That's what competitive ballroom dancing, or dancesport as it is now known, looks like. For many years, dancers have competed in large championship competitions in Europe, America, Canada, Australia, and the Far East. Now dancesport has come to Caltech, as the Caltech Ballroom Dance Team (CBDT)! Dancesport is a highly developed and stylized form of ballroom dancing in which the main emphasis is on performance and appearance. In a dance competition, couples dancing together on the same floor vie for the attention of the judges with their speed, elegance, body action, and/or dramatic movements (depending on the dance). To prepare for a competition, couples not only learn the steps they will dance, but study and practice a codified technique that enables them to produce the maximum visual effect while dancing.
Joining
No experience or partner is necessary to compete! We always welcome interested people. We will teach you what you need to know, and find you someone with whom to dance. Competitive dancing is a terrific way to improve your dancing quickly and impress your friends, and is also a fun hobby/sport/physical activity.

The mere vision of Prospect Hall's immense Grand Ballroom, with its glittering chandeliers, 45-foot high ceilings, and two tiers of balconies, is reason enough to inspire a twirling Viennese waltz, a tricky tango, or sultry rhumba. But the splendid space's inlaid wood floor is what makes ballroom dancing a true pleasure for both professionals and amateurs, earning Prospect Hall's nickname as "The Blackpool of America". This is truly a dance palace, with a long tradition of dancing, from masquerades to marathon dances. The hall has hosted both the United States Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association championship and the Manhattan Amateur Classic and continues to host major ballroom events up to four times a year.
