The Rutgers Resolutions The following resolutions were adopted by the participants at the international conference "Art, Antiquity and the Law: Preserving our Global Cultural Heritage," sponsored by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on October 30 - November 1, 1998.
    1. Believing that the ethical and legal acquisition of ancient art and artifacts is in the best interests of institutional and private collectors in their role as stewards of the cultural heritage, and benefits both public education and international cooperation, we urge that: * Museums, dealers, and collectors should adopt and adhere to the principles of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) Code of Ethics, implementing acquisition procedures to the highest feasible standards of due diligence, in order to sustain a licit exchange and trade in such objects. 2. Convinced that the looting of antiquities deprives them of their historical context and causes the destruction of archaeological sites, we encourage nations rich in antiquities:

    BIBLIOGRAPHY: The Early Modern World
The following bibliography should be regarded as a somewhat arbitrary work in progress. It is uneven in its global coverage, with more material on Europe (though anything but comprehensive) and Latin America than on other regions; even there, many "classics" are sure to be missing. On the whole, I have not included sources or source collections; in the future, particularly useful collections would improve the list. I have also not included general surveys (such as the "Cambridge Histories", with some exceptions) or textbooks.
Instead, my primary goal has been to list works that either are explicitly comparative or interregional in their focus, or which approach particular regions or situations from a global perspective. This includes, for example, works that focus on moments of culture contact between distant strangers, work that discusses changes in everyday life brought about by large-scale developments, and works in which agents from multiple social, economic or cultural systems are observed interacting.
Many thanks to students in History 207 in past years, and to colleagues who have provided suggestions, including: Lynda Bell, Piya Chatterjee, Lucille Chia, Stephen Homick, Ray Kea, Rebecca "Monte" Kugel, Joseph Miller, Robert Patch, M. N. Pearson, Clifford Trafzer, and others.

Exhibit Panelists "To Wrap, or Not To Wrap?: A Comparison between West African and American Aesthetics" Heather Marie Akou Although many women in West Africa today wear t-shirts, blouses, and even high heels (imported from the West or modeled after Western dress) they often combine this clothing with ‘wrappers’—2 yards of cloth worn wrapped and tucked around the waist. Wrappers come in many forms—made of stripcloth, factory prints, and luxurious imports from India and Europe—lending an air of elegance, maturity, and prestige to the women who wear them. From the viewpoint of West African aesthetics, they enhance some of the best features of a woman’s body. Several American importers (such as Homeland Authentics and Afritex, both based in New York) are using this cloth to manufacture ‘Afrocentric’ clothing for American consumers. Although the ensembles they produce look similar to West African dress, they rarely (if ever) include wrappers.

It would have thereby gained some coherence and accuracy, but would no longer express the authentic voices of the participants and student-editor. So despite some misgivings, it's posted here almost as it was handed over to me by the project's editor. The final paper says some very interesting things about elephants, of course, but it's posted here mainly as an example of what an interdisciplinary class projects can accomplish. I think students enjoyed the collaboration that this involved, the topic, and the outcome: a holistic answer to the question "what is an elephant."
