Her deep rooted heritage is amply reflected in her architecture, literature , dance, drama, music and painting. Bangladeshi culture is influenced by three great religions- Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam in successive order, with Islam having the most pervading and lasting impact. Like a colorful montage, the cultural tradition of the country is a happy blending of many variants, unique in diversity but in essence greatly symmetrical. Festivals:
A series of festivals varying from race to race are observed here. Some of the Muslim rites are Eid-e-Miladunnabi, Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Azha, Muharram etc. Hindus observe Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja, Kali Puja and many other pujas. Christmas ( popularly called Baradin in Bangla ) is observed by Christians. Also there are some common festivities, which are observed countrywide by people irrespective of races. Pahela Baishakh (the first day of Bangla year) is such a festival. National festivals are Independence Day (26th March)

If one is to make a historical survey of Bengali folklore, covering all branches of formalised folklore, such as tales, songs, ballads, proverbs, riddles, charms, superstitions, myths, legends and similar traditional materials, he must be acquainted with social and ethnic conditions of the country.
The folklore of Bangladesh is heavily influenced by different races which were present years ago. The abundant folklore of the present-day Bangladesh, therefore, contains a variety of elements, which is partly to be explained by the historical forces.
Under the British initiative, the study of folklore was advanced primarily by the British civil officers and European missionaries.
After the Sepoy Revolution of 1857, there followed more congenial atmosphere to investigate folklore. In 1858, by a proclamation of Queen Victoria, the administration was transferred from the East India Company to a Viceroy, the representative of the Queen of England. From then on, the English officials before leaving England, were instructed to mix with the Indian people to try to gain their confidence, and also to respect their religions, culture and customs. The officials who came to India were clearly familiar with the anthropology, ethnology and of course, folklore. The officials launched many journals and publications, which richly contained enormous quality of folklore materials.

INFORMATION Travel Literature Health Care Visa Apart from the obvious religious differences, Bangladesh does not differ markedly from the culture found in the neighboring Indian state of West Bengal. Centuries of isolation, even when foreign powers ruled, have shaped people, customs and values that are typically Bengali in nature. On the surface, Bangladeshis may appear to be abrupt, unsophisticated and at times aggressive, but at heart they are warm, hospitable and exceedingly helpful. If you find yourself in any sort of difficulty in a public place, don’t be surprised by the Bangladeshis who will go out of their way to help you. More than 80% of the population still lives in rural villages. Even for the city dwellers, there is a strong connection to the ‘home village’. Most of them earn their living from the land, either by farming their own, which is becoming less common as the population increases, or by working for someone else. Rural lives are bounded by dependency: on the elders of the family, on the employer or village patron, or on some other authority figure. Loyalty to the group is an essential cultural value and one that carries over to urban life. At the core of this group is the extended family, which forms the basis of social and economic life in Bangladesh and remains a cornerstone despite growing urbanization. The head of the household assumes much of the responsibility, and provides for parents, children and other relatives. They all may occupy one house or compound area, and establish separate kitchens as the family grows and more independence is sought. When a son marries, his wife is brought to the family home and assumes the duties outlined by her mother-in-law. The family is a tightly knit group, not only for economic and protective reasons, but as a major center of recreational and social activity

... Schedule 2001 INFORMATION Travel Literature Health Care Visa Bangladesh can be proud of its rich ancient civilization. In the past this was avery rich and developed region. Travelers like Fa Xien in the 5 th century, Hieun Tsang in the 7 th th century, Mu Huang in the 15 th century and Zaheed Beg in the 17 th century all left their impressions glorifying this place. They all were impressed by the general prosperity of the land and its wealthy cities with their palaces, temples and gardens. Near Jaipurhat in Bogra, lies a small village named Paharpur where the remains of the largest known monastery south of the Himalayas were exposed. It covers an area of about 27 acres, and consists of many structures enclosed by a continuous line of walling. The central structure is so big that it is locally known as pahar (hill). The present name is entirely due to the presence of the ruins of the ancient temple, which must have dominated the landscape, although it lies in the midst of the flat alluvial plain of northern Bengal. This monument was built between the middle of the 7

Culture The Bengal region has a multifaceted folk heritage, enriched by its ancient animist, Buddhist, Hindu, and Muslim roots. Weaving, pottery and terracotta sculpture are some of the earliest forms of artistic expression. The best known literature of Bangladesh is the work of the great Bengali poets Rabindranath Tagore and Nasrul Islam. Folk theatre is common at the village level and usually takes place during harvest time or at melas (village fairs). There are many folk dances, but classical dance is largely borrowed from Indian models and is frowned upon by the more severe religious leaders. Bangladesh's Muslims and Hindus live in relative harmony. The Muslim majority has religious leaders, pirs , whose status straddles the gap between that of a bishop and that of a sage. Hinduism in Bangladesh lacks the pomp and awe of the Indian version, but consequently Hindu ceremonies are rarely conducted in the depths of temples to which access is restricted. People here are very willing for you to watch and even participate. Buddhists today form only a tiny minority of the population. It's worth noting that the Bangladeshi pride in ancestry is balanced by the Islamic slant of the country's intellectual life which tends to deny the achievements of the preceding Hindu and Buddhist cultures.

Virtual Bangladesh : Arts and Culture : Cinema
Although cinema had always been a popular form of entertainment, it was not until 1956 that the first full-length feature film could he produced in Bangladesh. At present the industry is capable of producing around 60 feature films per year. The Films of Bangladesh display a pattern similar to those of other countries of the subcontinent. The themes range from social and historical to fantasies and fairy-tales. In recent years, there has been a tendency to experiment with the medium; one of the outcomes has been an abundance of popular Short Feature Films. To encourage quality film making, the Government has introduced national film awards and set up an institute of Film Archive. A Film institute has also been established recently to provide formal training to the students of film making. "Surjo Dighal Bari" and "Dahan" are two internationally acclaimed films.
