    Geography and History
    Geography
Barbados is the most easterly of the Caribbean islands. It is situated 13 degrees 10 minutes North and 59 degrees 39 minutes West, or 435 kilometres North East of Venezuela and 2,575 kilometres South East of Miami. The island is easily accessible by frequent scheduled flights from Miami (3.5 hours), New York (4.5 hours), Toronto (5.5 hours) and London or Brussels (8 hours).
    History
None of the original Arawaks who lived in Barbados have remained. It is believed that these Arawaks inhabited Barbados around 600 BC but were driven out by Caribs who themselves did not settle in Barbados.
The existence of Barbados was known to Europeans since the sixteenth century. However, it was not until 1627 that a formal colony was established by a group of English settlers who planted tobacco and cotton for export to England.
After 1645 these crops were replaced by sugar which fostered the development of the plantation system.
In the 166 years since the abolition of slavery in 1834, the descendants of the African slaves who were brought into Barbados to underpin the plantation system, along with the descendants of planters and indentured labourers, have developed into a thriving and industrious population, contributing greatly to the economic and political development of Barbados.

    Geography
Barbados is the easternmost island of the Lesser Antilles, situated 480 kilometers north of Guyana, 160 kilometers east of St. Vincent, and 965 kilometers southeast of Puerto Rico (see fig. 1). This isolated pear-shaped island extends for 34 kilometers along a north-south axis and has a maximum breadth of 23 kilometers, giving it a total land area of 430 square kilometers (about the size of San Antonio, Texas, or half the size of New York City). Barbados is fringed with coral reefs. The island itself is characterized by lowlands or gently sloping, terraced plains, separated by rolling hills that generally parallel the coasts. Elevations in the interior range from 180 to 240 meters above sea level. Mount Hillaby is the highest point at 340 meters above sea level. Farther south, at Christ Church Ridge, elevations range from sixty to ninety meters (see fig. 13). Eighty-five percent of the island's surface consists of coralline limestone twenty-four to thirty meters thick; Scotland District contains outcroppings of oceanic formations at the surface, however. Sugarcane is planted on almost 80 percent of the island's limestone surface. The soils vary in fertility; erosion is a problem, with crop loss resulting from landslides, washouts, and falling rocks. Most of the small streams are in Scotland District. The rest of the island has few surface streams; nevertheless, rainwater saturates the soil to produce underground channels such as the famous Coles Cave.

    Geography
Barbados as the most easterly island in the Caribbean chain of Islands, stretching from Florida on the North American mainland to the Guianas on the northern mainland of South America, stands in splendid isolation at Latitude 13° North and Longitude 59° 37W. With 23 kilometres (14 miles) at its widest point and 34 kilometers (21 miles) long, it is a mere 416 square kilometres (166 square miles). Most of the island is made up of soft marine deposits of coral limestone. This limestone cover gives way in the north-eastern part of the island to a terrain of clays and sandstones comprising the Scotland marine sedimentary formation. This area runs through the parishes of St. Joseph, St. John and St. Andrew and embraces about one-sixth of the island. Barbados has been described as flat and low lying, but in fact, it rises from west to east in a series of gentle terraces to its highest point of about 1100ft at Mount Hillaby in St. Andrew. The terrain dips in St. George to form the St. George Valley, separating the main limestone terraces from a lower limestone ridge in the Christ Church area.
    Temperature and Rainfall
Barbados enjoys a stable climate. The temperature rarely falls below 23°C or rises above 30°C. There is a definite "wet season" from July to November and a "dry season" with minimum rainfall recorded in February and March.
