The National Flag of Barbados
The national flag of Barbados is comprised of three equal vertical panels - the centre panel of gold and the outer panels of ultramarine. A broken trident in black is located in the centre of the flag.
Blue represents the sea and sky of Barbados, while gold represents the sand of the island's beaches. The symbol at the centre of the flag represents the Trident of the mythical sea god, Neptune - the shaft of the trident is broken symbolising Barbados' break from Britain.
Some rules concerning the display of the National Flag of Barbados
The National Flag should be flown every day from the Public Buildings, Trafalgar Square, from 6:00am to 6:00pm. It may also be flown daily from government buildings and schools when they are in session, and places of business. The National Flag should not be flown after 6:00pm except inside a building.
The National Flag is flown at half-mast in mourning. The decision on the occasions on which the flag should be flown at half-mast rest with the Cabinet (Government).

Government of Barbados
Barbados has a representative Democratic Government. The island is divided into twenty-eight constituencies. At a General Election, the representatives from each constituency are voted for by their constituents. The party winning the most seats in the House of Assembly will then become the leading party. If the leader of the winning party also wins his seat, he becomes the Prime Minister, if he loses his seat the party must elect another to take his place as Prime Minister. The Prime Minister then appoints his Government ministers. As of the last elections, held in January 1999, the Government of Barbados is run by the Barbados Labour Party (winning 26 seats in the election). The Democratic Labour Party won 2 seats. The names of the Ministers, and other Government personnel are:
  • Governor General - Husbands, Clifford, Sir

HEALTH-BARBADOS: Government to Make AIDS Drugs Free to HIV Infected Persons Inter Press Service - December 15, 2000
George Alleyne BRIDGETOWN, Dec 15 (IPS) - Propelled by an alarming growth in the incidence of HIV and AIDS, the Barbados government has decided to make free to all infected persons, anti-retroviral drugs that check the spread of the disease within the body. This move means that the HIV/AIDS budget will increase significantly, from its current 600,000 dollars to over 12 million dollars annually. Officials are unable to say exactly when the programme will begin, but it is expected to provide some financial relief for those infected with HIV (the Human Immunodeficiency Virus) that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). HIV patients spend 800 dollars a month on AIDS medication. Currently such drugs are available without cost only to pregnant women. Prime Minister Owen Arthur, who made the announcement recently, spoke of an ambitious drive to cut by half the number of deaths attributed to AIDS, within one year. According to Dr Roland Knight of the environmental health department of the health ministry, in Barbados there is a short survival rate of 10 to 12 months for persons who have moved from the stage of HIV infection to full blown AIDS.

    INTRODUCTION
Background: The island was uninhabited when first settled by the British in 1627. Its economy remained heavily dependent on sugar, rum, and molasses production through most of the 20th century. In the 1990s, tourism and manufacturing surpassed the sugar industry in economic importance.
