From Fetzer To Finley: Carolina's Olympic Sports Have Done It All This Year UNC looks to clinch Carlyle Cup Sunday.
April 20, 2002 By Dave Lohse
    Associate Athletic Communications Director
Chalk up the 2001-02 athletic year as another sterling one for the Olympic sports program at the University of North Carolina. As the spring sports season begins its transition from conference championship to NCAA championship phase in the next few weeks Carolina's excellence has become abundantly clear once again. On Saturday, the Tar Heels' women's outdoor track and field team won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship, giving UNC four league titles this school year. Three more Tar Heel teams will be in ACC championship matches on Sunday in women's lacrosse versus Maryland, men's tennis versus Georgia Tech and women's tennis versus Duke. In addition to women's outdoor track and field, Carolina has also won ACC titles this year in women's soccer, volleyball and women's swimming and diving. Carolina is bidding this year to lead or share the lead in the number of ACC titles won for the 15th successive year. The last time any school won more conference championships in a single school year than Carolina was 1986-87. Wow! With the Sears Directors' Cup standings set to be updated again this coming Thursday, the Tar Heel athletic program currently stands a solid second in this year's rankings and barring a complete collapse in the spring, which appears highly unlikely, the Tar Heels are destined for a Top Five finish with a great chance to finish as high as second.

    THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

Tracy and Ken Goldberg of Sandy have to admit that baseball isn't their favorite Olympic sport, and that outside of the Americas and the Pacific Rim, it probably wouldn't be missed if dumped from the Olympics as has been suggested.
Still, as they sat with their two kids watching the playoff-bound Salt Lake Stingers on a warm Labor Day weekend afternoon, it seemed like a completely ridiculous idea.
"We just watched 'The Rookie' on DVD, so we're pretty pumped about baseball right now," Tracy Goldberg said.
If only members of the International Olympic Committee were so easily persuaded.
The IOC contends that baseball and women's softball don't have enough global appeal to remain Olympic sports. Plus, the facilities are too costly. According to the IOC's program commission, rugby and golf would be a better fit, and that's what the panel has proposed for the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing.

ST. LOUIS AND THE ST. PETERS REC-PLEX SELECTED TO HOST THE U.S. OLYMPIC DIVING TRIALS
REGION ADDS ANOTHER GOLD MEDAL EVENT FOR 2004 U.S. Olympic Diving Trials The St. Louis Sports Commission, City of St. Peters and the Rec-Plex partnered on the successful bid. The three entities will form the local organizing committee for the event, which is scheduled for June 9-13, 2004. Between 60 and 100 athletes are expected to compete in the springboard and platform diving events that are part of the Trials. NBC owns the television rights to the event and plans to broadcast four hours of the competition to a national audience. "In a great sports market like St. Louis, we have to set the bar high in terms of the events we pursue," said Sports Commission President Frank Viverito. "The Olympic Diving Trials offer a great payoff to St. Louis — there’s national TV exposure, it connects with our Olympic legacy and it gives us the opportunity to utilize one of the region’s great facilities for a major Olympic event. We look forward to working with the Rec-Plex and the City of St. Peters to produce a wonderful, memorable event for the area, and we’ll be seeking significant corporate and community support to ensure we can be successful."

But Gay, who rushed for 4,640 yards as a prep in Texas, has played only briefly in junior college and the CFL, and his history since high school is, well, strange. Gay’s last chance may come at the NFL’s July 18 supplemental draft. Article added Tuesday, September 19, 2000 How to Photograph Olympic Sports Reprinted with permission from the New York Institute of Photography web site at www.nyip.com Photo by Marty Lamp Regardless of whether you are one of the millions of lucky spectators, camera in hand, at the 2000 Olympics, or you are at your local high school track meet, here are some tips from the New York Institute of Photography to help you take exciting pictures at your favorite sporting events. According to Chuck DeLaney, Dean of the world's largest photography school, "These tips will help you get great photos regardless of whether you are at an Olympic swim meet or your child's soccer game." 1. Fill the frame. Try to fill the frame with a player's body, rather than simply showing him or her as a distant speck. The type of picture you're looking for is a closeup action shot. A shot that fills the frame with just one or two players in the heat of a basketball game or a gymnast swinging from the parallel bars.
