Basketball
Men's Olympic basketball became an official sport in 1936 at the Berlin Games. The tournament was held outdoor on courts of clay and sand. On the day of the final it rained heavily, turning the courts to mud, which made it difficult to dribble and undoubtedly contributed to the low score of 19-8. In the end, the United States defeated Canada for the gold. In 1989 the Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA) membership voted to allow professionals to join amateurs in the Olympics. Women's basketball made its Olympic debut at the 1976 Games in Montreal, Canada. The Soviet women won the gold medal, and the U.S. women took home the silver medal.

Players #4 Kyla Burwash

Kyla is a second year Phys. Ed. student coming off a solid first season. A very quick guard, both offensively and defensively, this Van Kleek Hill native is a valuable asset to any team. A deadly three-point shooter, and able to create off the dribble, she consistently draws two defenders to open up her teammates for easy scores. Equally quick on defense, Ky will intimidate many of the country's top point guards. #5 Nathalie MacNeil
Hailing from Guelph, Nathalie was plagued by injuries in year one, but has returned this season healthy and ready to make an impact. This 2nd year Phys. Ed. student has very quick hands, and is able to deflect many passes and upset many dribblers. Excellent vision allows Nat to find open teammates quickly, both in transition and in the quarter court. Rounding out the package, Nat has a great three-point shot and clever moves to the hoop. #6 Lindsay Rogers
A gifted athlete, this second year Science student makes the trip from Invermere, British Columbia. Possessing excellent shooting form and powerful drives to the hoop, Linz has progressed nicely since first donning a Golden Gaels uniform. Quick feet and great speed will allow her to get open in the revamped Queen's offense, while her great leaping ability will make her a force on the boards. #7 Casey Pratt
Casey heads into her third season in the well-earned role of co-captain. Capturing rookie honours in her first year, Casey continued to be the backbone of the team last season. Touted as one of the country's best point guards (a reputation that is well deserved), she moves the ball very well, either through the air or by the dribble. Her understanding of the game lets her see plays develop ahead of time a skill rarely found in sport. A London native, Casey has worked hard in the off-season and returns with a deadly outside shot, including three-point range.

Sports Medicine Newsletters
Fall 2001 Welcome letter: Greetings! On behalf of the University of Missouri and the University of Missouri Sports Medicine Staff, I thank you for your interest. The Univeristy of Missouri undergraduate athletic training program is an internship program. Our goal is to prepare the student with the skill and knowledge needed for the entry-level athletic trainer, a goal accomplished through an exciting blend of classroom instruction, a challenging multi-level competency testing program, and a minimum of 1500 hours of clinical experience. These clinical experiences include rotations through the two coeducational athletic training rooms, coverage of twenty intercollegiate sports in the powerful Big 12 Conference, sports medicine clinic, and orthopaedic surgery observations. The University of Missouri intercollegiate athletic program is undergoing unprecedented growth and revitalization under the direction of Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Mike Alden. Our beautiful Dr. Glenn L. McElroy Sportsmedicine Center is, without question, one of the nicest facilities in the country. Included within the 9,000 square foot athletic medical facility is a Swim-Ex pool, a Biodex 2 isokinetic testing and rehabilitation system, numerous custom made treatment and taping tables, a hydrotherapy room, and a spacious state-of-the-art rehabilitation area. The facility is staffed by five full-time certified athletic trainers, four graduate assistant athletic trainers, and in excess of thirty hard-working, well-prepared student athletic trainers. Furhtermore, the Big 12 Conference Committee for the Medical Aspects of Sport voted the University of Missouri athletic medical staff as the "Staff of the Year" for the 1999-2000 school year.

Debbie Ryan Hometown:
Titusville, N.J.
High School:
Hopewell Valley
Last College: Ursinus '75 Position: Head Coach Year at Virginia: 561-210 (25 yrs.) Career and Virginia Record Consistency is the mark of a winner. In her 25 years at the helm of the University of Virginia women?s basketball program, Debbie Ryan has averaged 22.4 wins per season. She has recorded 20 or more wins in a season 18 times and 30 or more twice. In 2002, she guided her youthful Cavaliers to their 19th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Ryan is the architect behind UVa?s rise to prominence in the 1990s, and she has maintained that level of excellence. No other team in the ACC has been ranked in the AP and USA Today polls more total weeks or consecutive weeks than the Cavaliers. And only a few teams across the nation can match the level of success that the Cavaliers have experienced in NCAA competition. Her teams have been to 19 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, second only to Tennessee and Louisiana Tech. She directed UVa to three consecutive Final Four appearances in the 1990s and has consistently had the Cavaliers in contention for a national title. In 1999, Ryan distinguished herself further by joining an elite group of coaches who have won 500 games at the Division I level. With the win over Florida State on Feb. 21, 1999, Ryan reached the 500 victory milestone. At that time, only five other coaches in Division I had attained 500 wins at one school: Pat Summit (Tennessee), Jody Conradt (Texas), Kay Yow (N.C. State), Mike Granelli (St. Peter?s), and Marian Washington (Kansas). When she won her 450th career game on Jan. 11, 1997 at N.C. State, she reached the 450-win milestone in only her 600th game, faster than any other men?s or women?s coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference. She was the first ACC coach to record 200 wins in league competition. In conference action, Ryan has a record of 242-93.
