Sponsored by The Decathlon in Olympic History Table of Contents: The Jim Thorpe Story When King Gustav V of Sweden presented awards at the 1912 Olympic Games of Stockholm, he proclaimed to the decathlon winner, an American Indian named Jim Thorpe, as the world's top athlete. "You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.

The Birth of the Basketball Hall of Fame
The inspiration, dedication and courage of its pioneers have been rewarded by a Hall of Fame worthy of a 30-year wait.
Webster's dictionary doesn't have a definition for Hall of Fame. In fact the Hall of Fame means different things to different people. Above all, a Hall of Fame exists to acknowledge and honor the men and women who have risen to the top of their profession.
While it's true that a Hall of Fame can become a state of mind, a Hall of Fame is really a physical structure and a shrine to the people who are fortunate enough to earn induction. The world's only Basketball Hall of Fame, located in Springfield, Mass., is one of the most technically advanced and architecturally distinctive museums in the world. But the $11.5 million dollar, three-level shrine dedicated to the game's inventor didn't happen by accident. The Basketball Hall of Fame took 30 years to become a reality.
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was born on February 17, 1968, on the campus of Springfield College. It was a significant milestone in the world of sports. Never before had basketball had a home to house the greats of the game. When the doors to the Hall of Fame opened on that wintry morning in Springfield, a shrine dedicated to the elite of the game of basketball had become a reality.

Basketball is played on a rectangular court, which has a hard surface (often sprung wood) and a clear height above of at least 7m. The court is marked with a centre circle, having a radius of 1.8m and two "keyhole" shaped zones at each end. The baskets are solid iron rings, 45cm in diameter, from which a net is suspended and behind the rings are mounted blackboards. The ball is pressurised synthetic or leather, weighing a maximum of 650g and with a circumference of 78cm.
The Rules
At the Olympic Games Basketball is played under the International Basketball Federation rules. There are five players per team. Games last 40 minutes, consisting of two 20 minute halves with a 15 minute interval at half time.
Play begins with a "jump ball" where the ball is tossed in the air and two opposing players must leap up in an attempt to tap it to their team. All goals score two points, except for those taken from the free throw line after a foul. These score one point. A long distance throw (outside the key) scores three points. When a goal is scored, the opposition are given a throw-in from the endline for play to resume.

While thousands of women basketball players have the talent to compete at a high level, they don’t always have the opportunity, instruction, or training to do so. Basketball for Women was designed to help these players achieve their fullest potential.
Written by Nancy Lieberman-Cline and Robin Roberts, two women who know the game and how to excel at it, this practical guide challenges women from high school through college to develop their talent and skill to the highest level.
Basketball for Women provides 111 drills for improving and refining offensive and defensive skills. The authors explain the importance of each skill, identify the keys to proper technique, show how to correct common errors, and apply these skills in game situations. The drills are great tools for improving every practice and workout.
Unlike most basketball books for women, this unique resource goes beyond the basics to address topics for the serious-minded player, including:
• an overview of the history of women’s basketball; • identifying priorities, establishing goals, and seizing opportunities; • 10 steps for handling success; • getting the most out of practice and games; • dealing with special game situations and matchups; • where to play during the off-season; • teamwork, coachability, and attitude; and • recruitment.
Filled with proven principles, innovative drills, and conditioning guidelines designed especially for women, Basketball for Women will help players eliminate their weaknesses and sharpen their strengths to succeed at any level.

MEN'S BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Australia reaches semis
By JIM O'CONNELL, AP Basketball Writer
SYDNEY, Australia (September 28, 2000 8:52 a.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com ) - Andrew Gaze is making his fifth Olympics his best.
Gaze scored 13 of Australia's last 15 points Thursday to lead the host country into the semifinals of the men's basketball tournament with a 65-62 victory over Italy. The 35-year-old guard is the second-leading scorer in Olympic history to Oscar Schmidt of Brazil. None of the 757 points have been any bigger than the ones down the stretch against Italy, as Australia's hopes for a gold medal stayed alive despite losing a 10-point lead midway through the second half. "We still have a couple more to go but we're really where we want to be right now," said Gaze, who had 27 points on 7-for-10 shooting, including 4 for 5 from 3-point range. The last two of those 3-pointers started his game closing run to keep Australia either in front or within a basket. His three-point play when he scored on a flip shot down low brought Australia within 60-59 with 2:09 left. He made two free throws with 1:38 left to make it 62-61.

Either he/she was excited to see the rest of the world finally give the United States some competition on the basketball court or was totally disgusted by a lackluster effort by the US squad that featured selfish play, immaturity, and lots of pouting (I’m looking at you, Jermaine O’Neal). I fall somewhere in between.
As a basketball fan, I am ecstatic to see the game truly going global. International ball was always interesting to watch…just when the United States wasn’t playing. I don’t care who is on the court; I’d rather watch Oprah in Spanish than a basketball game where the winner is a given.
