Why Basketry
Welcome to "Why Basketry". Two years ago I began this web page to promote my basketry classes. I'm no longer teaching basketry classes, but I still get many requests for class information or other related questions. Therefore, I am revising this web page as a listing for basketry classes in the DFW Metroplex. If you know of any basketry classes in this area, please send me an email and I will list the class and any additional information below.
  • The Craft Guild of Dallas - I haven't taken the class myself. If anyone knows more about this class, send me an email and I'll post your review. Here is the information for the class. Go to the link above to sign up.

Old Fort Harrod State Park Old Fort Harrod State Park commemorates the first permanent European settlement west of the Alleghenies. In March 1774, Captain James Harrod and thirty-two determined, brave men left Pennsylvania, and set out for Kentucky to claim lands and make a settlement. After a long and adventuresome journey, on June 16, 1774, Harrod and his men laid out a town, naming it Harrodstown. Today, Old Fort Harrod is a replica of the original. Enjoy a "living history" experience as you visit the cabins and blockhousescomplete with pioneer furnishings, where costumed craftspeople perform tasks such as weaving, basketry, woodworking, broom-making, and blacksmithing. Children will especially enjoy meeting the creature residents - cattle, sheep and turkey, in the fort corral! "Living History" with craftspeople & animals mid April thru October. Attention, Kentucky TEACHERS!

The history of baskets starts, I usually say, with Adam and Eve: In Paradise Eve learned to plait her hair, and in the same way she made a basket so she could transport fruit to the place where Adam and she usually slept. Perhaps the basket was the only thing they took with them out of Paradise. In any case, they took the idea with them, and so culture was born. Since then, baskets have existed in many shapes, made of many kinds of materials. I live in Denmark, but my ancestors came from southern Sweden, from whence they brought a special kind of basket to Denmark. My family settled here and, contrary to custom, made the baskets here instead of importing them from Sweden. The kind of basket I am talking about, is in English is called a splint-basket, and in Danish
