FLORIDA TROPICAL WEAVERS' GUILD
Florida Tropical Weaver's Guild is a non-profit organization whose primary mission is to educate the public on the art and craft of weaving, spinning and basketry. It's membership consists of anyone who is interested in promoting opportunities for weavers of all skill levels to develop new skills, interests and expand their creative efforts in the fiber arts. The state guild was formed March 5, 1943, precipitated by the Florida Department of Agriculture - Sea Island Bureau re-introducing cotton in the state as a commercial crop in 1935. Individuals were sought who could teach the public about the many aspects of cotton - growth, processing, and use. Naturally, spinning and weaving were an integral part of this and teachers were identified in the Orlando area who would teach a cottage industry of spinning and weaving cotton cloth. This simple education project took hold across the state. Individual guilds were formed and, in 1943, the Florida Tropical Weaver's Guild was formed as a way of joining individual guilds together and providing further support to the education efforts. We have come a long way, building on a foundation of the love of fiber, the desire to learn technical weaving skills and the creative urge to expand the use and manipulation of cloth. This is evident as you look back on past conferences and the classes offered.

the craft of basketry in southern africa
E. M. Shaw, South African Museum
Sagittarius
Volume 3, Number 4 T he ancient and often beautiful craft of basketry is part of the wider technique of basketwork and is found practically all over the world. The basis of the technique is the interlacing or sewing together of two sets of elements. Very often both of them are flexible, but sometimes, as in wickerwork. only one is. There are several variations in the way this can be done.
Where the craft originated is not known, if in fact it was in any one place. The earliest archaeological records come from the Near East, where basketwork has been found in deposits as early as about 7000 years ago. In Europe and Peru the earliest finds are about 4500 years old. The basic techniques of these ancient examples are the same as those used all over the world today, because there are only certain ways in which individual elements can be turned into a fabric.

Welcome to Bear Canyon Galleries
an online, southwest Native American gallery featuring contemporary and traditional basketry, beadwork, fetishes, Katsinas (Kachinas), paintings, pottery, silver and gold jewelry, sculpture, textiles and weavings and more. The Indian artists we represent primarily live and work in Arizona and New Mexico. They are members of tribes such as the Acoma, Jicarilla and Mescalero Apache, Cochiti, Hopi, Isleta, Jemez, Laguna, Nambe, Navajo, San Ildefonso, Santa Ana, Santo Domingo, Taos, Tesuque, Zia and Zuni. Some live and work at their Pueblos or on the Reservations. Others live and work in cities and towns such as Camp Verde, Flagstaff, Holbrook, Prescott, Scottsdale, Sedona and Tucson, AZ, as well as Albuquerque, Gallup and Santa Fe, NM.
Southwestern Native American art, some of which has been influenced by centuries of history, combines an intrinsic spirit with timeless appeal. Many of these Indian artists use techniques and materials their ancestors did thousands of years ago, for example in basketry, Katsinas, pottery or textiles and weaving. Others are using techniques and materials that have evolved more recently into classic as well as contemporary wearable art, for example handmade clothing and accessories and exquisite silver and gold jewelry with turquoise, coral, lapis and many other stones and materials. Or others have drawn upon ancient images such as petroglyphs and kiva wall paintings to create acrylic, oil or watercolor paintings and metal and stone sculptures.

Basketry and Cordage
Basketry and cordage represent major types of perishable finds retrieved in this arid part of Israel. The basketry fragments on display are made of date palm leaves, a material convenient for making baskets and mats. Reconstruction of weaving or plaiting techniques is possible because of the exceptional conditions inside the caves of the Dead Sea region. The technique used is a type of plaiting that was popular during Roman times and remained in favor through the following centuries; a variant is still used in the Near East today. Basketry was probably very common, as it is to this day, in various household activities. However, in times of need, baskets and mats also served for collecting and wrapping the bones and skulls of the dead. Cordage was made from materials indigenous to this region: palm leaves, palm fibers, and rushes. Cords had various uses as packaging and reinforcing material and as handles for baskets.
