Beadwork Patterns S ome of the patterns I have here are very popular in Moscow and every classes on beadwork teach them, some are of my own design, this is just my little contribution into the Internet beading collection. Yes, if you search the Internet sites on beadwork You'll find more patterns than you could weave for years! All the patterns on my site are free, read them, print and try. H ere is my Beading FAQ where I have gathered the most often asked questions about the patterns and the beadwork gallery on this site. I had my first beadwork book... well, not a book, just a thin magazine... published! It has 12 patterns of beaded purses, some of them can be seen in my gallery. Regretably, it is in Russian. And I don't sell it myself, I had 50 copies and sent most of them to my friends Russian beadwork shops sell it as well as other nice Russian bead books. You may fax a request for minimum quantity to (7+095) 195-92-90, probably they can wholesale overseas.

23. The Zulu Beadwork Language
beadwork in the ZULU cultural tradition. The deliberate breaking of rules by whichthese factors operate. beadwork is a byproduct of feminine socialization.
http://minotaur.marques.co.za/clients/zulu/bead.htm
Beadwork in the ZULU cultural tradition.
All traditional ZULU beadwork, excluding items used by ritual specialists, relates in someway to courtship and marriage. According to Regina Twala (African Studies, Volume 10, no 3 1951, pp 113 - 123), it also helps to regulate behaviour between individuals of opposite gender. This exclusively feminine craft has an inituitive fluency found only in inspired forms of poetry and visual art. Beadworkers are unware of a "system" such as that imposed upon language by spelling rules and grammar. However, no true art is without discipline, so ZULU craftswomen accept certain fundamentals:
  • Beadwork communicates between unrelated males and females, avoiding the discomfort of direct initial discourse on the sensitive subject of personal relations.
  • Beadwork flows from females, the designers and manufactures, to males - their traditional clients.
  • Men wear beadwork to show involvement with women they may marry, incestuous implications preclude beaded gifts from mothers, sisters and daugters.
  • Beadwork symbolism is encoded within a limited number of colours and geometric figures.

O n the left, Atlantic whelks, the type of shell from which chains of white wampum tubular beads (which were strung in coimplex chains) were made from the long central spiral inside the shell. Right, a quahog, the Atlantic clam from which the more rectangular purple wampum beads were made. Its name comes from the Narraganset word po-qua-hock . Belt-wampum beads were rectangular cutouts, with drilled holes, rolled smooth on sandstone, then woven into a shell-beaded fabric. They recorded agreements, with the purple color predominant if the agreement was considered more important, serious, or sad.
The Hiawatha Belt
T his belt may be the oldest. It represents the first United Nations agreement, the first time in history anywhere on the globe where independent nations were able to join together under a unified government that allowed individual customs and governments of member nations. Prior to this idea, throughout the world's history in all places and times, national growth was by conquest and forced subjection empire growth. This belt memorialized Haudaunosee, League of the Pine Tree (center) or Great Peace, of the 5 original Iroquois Nations, who became the 6 Nations after they received fleeing southern Tuscarora into the League.

35. Susan Franke, Jewelry Designer
Custom jewelry designer specializing in beadwork and enameling.
http://www.susanfranke.com/
"I have always loved jewelry, and derive great satisfaction from the creation process. All of my jewelry is handcrafted by me, and combines bead artistry with original enameled designs.
I use quality materials such as Swarovski crystal, freshwater pearls, Bali silver, semi-precious stones, and Czech and German glass beads in my designs. All of my enameled jewelry is kiln fired at temperatures ranging from 1450 - 1550 degrees using opaque and transparent glass fused to copper or silver foil.
Glass enamel’s seemingly effortless intertwining of bold and subtle color combinations has always intrigued me. Enamels provide a depth and brilliance of color that is not often found in other jewelry mediums. To me, these colors reflect the natural beauty of a cloudy sky, a field of flowers, or a rocky mountainside. My inspiration comes from the endless combination of colors, sizes, and textures that beads provide to create unique pieces of jewelry." Web site by Glass Griffin Graphics Inc.

I'm glad you came to visit my web page, this web page is about my native american beadwork and my heritage.I'm from the Fort Hall, Indian reservation and I'm a Shoshone Bannock Tribal member but I'm of paiute descent. I was raised in the traditional manner with all the language, customs and traditions of the tribe. My grandmother was known as a master in the art of hide tanning and beadwork specializing in intricate floral and geometric designs of the Intermountain tribes. My grandfather also helped me by telling me about the colors of the sky and the animals, explaining to me about the markings, and movements of certain wildlife. My grandparents both were very great people to me.I had alot of encouragement in doing my beadwork from both grandparents, I combined both geometric and wildlife together and developed a style that is very unique, My mentor Clyde Hall who has been taking my beadwork around the United States,he says that my beadwork is sought after through out the united States including Chicago and california. I take orders for all types of handmade beadwork items.

Hello
You have reached the web site of the
Center for the Study of Beadwork

Although recently updated (02/25/03), this web site is still in the early stages of development. The initial activity of this site will be to sell books and magazines, the profits from which will be used to support this site. For those interested in more Ornament Magazines than I show here, I've created a page detailing issues that I don't carry, but which Ornament does, including prices, shipping charges and contact information. That can be reached at the bottom of the Ornament Magazine page on this site.
It is no longer possible to become a member of the CSB. Back issues of notes from a Beadworker's Journal , however, are still available for purchase. However, although I have a link below for it, I still need to write the copy for that link. Check back in another few weeks to see if I've gotten the copy written.
Other resources will continue to be added, including services to the field.
The CSB library is available for research, by appointment.
