    the art of ndebele beadwork
By Lindsay Hooper, South African Museum
    Sagittarius
Volume 3, Number 4 December 1988 Razor blades, telephone poles, car registration numbers - what could these have in common? They are amongst the variety of ordinary objects which form part of the everyday experience of people, but for Ndebele artists, they provide inspiration for the development of bold designs for beadwork and wall painting. Travellers through the flat southern Transvaal landscape are struck by the vivid colours and patterns of Ndebele homesteads, and if lucky, may see Ndebele women dressd for special occasions in their dazzling beadwork finery. Some people familiar with the people and area may observe current changes from glass beads to plastic beads, braid and other innovations, and may bewail these as a loss of 'tradition'. To consider whether this is so, it is necessary to know a little of the history of the southern Transvaal Ndebele. Linguistically they are related to other southern African Nguni speakers (the Xhosa, Zulu, Swazi and Ndebele in Zimbabwe). They are thought to have moved from Natal to the Transvaal area at some time between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. Succession struggles split the group, and further scattering followed the onslaught of Mzilikazi and his soldiers as they moved northwards from Shaka's kingdom in the nineteenth century. Later in the nineteenth century the Ndzundza section of the Ndebele, in the southern Transvaal, were involved in battles against the Pedi under Sekhukhune. Partly as a consequence of this hostility, they came into fierce conflict with the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek. The Ndzundza were defeated in 1882 after a long campaign, and the Z.A.R., determined to break their power, settled white farmers on the chiefs land and dispersed the Ndebele as farm labourers.
