SARAGURO: COLLARES / BEADWORK NECKLACES
Bead necklaces are worn by Saraguro women both for daily wear and for special occasions. Beadworking is done mainly by Saraguro women, although a few men also do beadwork. The first necklace shown below (top left) is from the 1960s. Other necklaces from this period were woven with the same basic pattern, variations consisting primarily in numbers of rows and in color combinations. Since the 1980s (all the rest shown) there has been a continuous development of new patterns and styles of necklace beadwork. Also, more recently, Saraguros have been beading bracelets and "lizard" ( largato ) necklaces (shown on the fifth row), both of which are worn by men as well as by women.

85. African Dreams - Online African Art
Provides an online source of African tribal art, including beadwork, jewellery, sculpture and masks.
http://www.african-dreams.co.za
In the spirit of "The African Renaissance" encouraged by South African President Thabo Mbeki, African Dreams provides your universal link to the mysterious culture of Africa, materialised in a rich heritage of tribal art. Each traditional item we source for you is a unique, handcrafted symbol of ancient culture passed on from one generation to another and may or may not have been utilised for original purposes. The earthy textures and the smoke that still permeates many of the traditional items, evoke the drum beats and rhythms pulsing through Africa, over sandy plains and jungles, under fiery sunsets and tropical storms, conjuring up magical images of ancient rites and ceremonies calling on the powerful ancestral spirits which form the strongest religion and most cohesive force in primitive society.
Items which are not historical in origin, form a colourful collage of modern African life, some utilitarian and others purely decorative, often with ingenious combinations of recycled materials from the Western world.
Not for the first time, have other continents shown such interest in the mystique of Africa. Entering a new century, we can reminisce about the turn of the last century when the Parisian avante-garde set the trends that would influence western art and literature. Collections of African Art in Europe became a status symbol, and its symbolic and formal influence on abstraction in important art movements cannot be denied. Joseph Conrad's "Heart Of Darkness" was the western literary contribution which epitomised the savagery and unknown depths of Africa, which became so fascinating to those who dared not venture there, and lingered on to the seventies to form the symbolic theme of the Hollywood movie "Apocalypse Now".

I'm glad you came to visit my web page, this web page is about my native american beadwork and my heritage.I'm from the Fort Hall, Indian reservation and I'm a Shoshone Bannock Tribal member but I'm of paiute descent. I was raised in the traditional manner with all the language, customs and traditions of the tribe. My grandmother was known as a master in the art of hide tanning and beadwork specializing in intricate floral and geometric designs of the Intermountain tribes. My grandfather also helped me by telling me about the colors of the sky and the animals, explaining to me about the markings, and movements of certain wildlife. My grandparents both were very great people to me.I had alot of encouragement in doing my beadwork from both grandparents, I combined both geometric and wildlife together and developed a style that is very unique, My mentor Clyde Hall who has been taking my beadwork around the United States,he says that my beadwork is sought after through out the united States including Chicago and california. I take orders for all types of handmade beadwork items.

Mrs. Berry creates bandolier bags, moccasins, belts, sashes and men's garters, in the styles worn by the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole, prior to 1850. Display mounts for bandolier bags are also available. To order patterns and how-to instructions for making Southeastern Woodlands beadwork, click here and order online. We offer patterns for traditional bandolier bags, ceremonial sashes, belts and three styles of moccasins. To purchase Mrs. Berry's finished beadwork, please e-mail her directly. Thank you. "Those who are at the forefront of teaching our culture are our artists and crafts people. People like Martha Berry, Lena Blackbird, Anna Mitchell, Knokovtee Scott, Bill Glass, Talmadge Davis, Mary Adair, and many others memorialize and teach our culture and traditional arts. But as each of them know and would tell you, their Cherokee projects must be historically accurate and culturally true; otherwise, they have compromised the value of their work."

    About Nancy
    ...
    For More Information

Welcome to the NEW Ancient Artways Studio homepage Ancient Artways Studio is the home of quillworker Nancy Fonicello. Quillwork is the ancient art of embroidery using porcupine quills. It originated in North America and flourished for hundreds of years before the arrival of Europeans on the continent. With the advent of glass beads brought by the early fur traders, quillwork fell by the wayside, being preserved through the years by a handful of artists. Save for the objects featured in the restoration pages, all the pieces shown in these pages are original designs created by Nancy in her Montana studio. You will find images of bags, knife sheaths, moccasins, clothing and even horse gear made using porcupine quills, beads, brain-tanned leather and other traditional materials. Nancy's work has won wide acclaim for its historical accuracy and attention to detail. Examples of her original artwork can be seen in the hands of museums and private collectors around the world. Nancy is also in demand as a consultant, researcher, and as a conservator and restorer of historic ethnographic objects. We have expanded our page content to include several exciting new features!
