Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology, Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA 24061-0442 Twenty-four juvenile bearded dragon lizards, Pogona vitticeps, were divided into four groups of six lizards each for a preliminary feeding study. Groups 1-3 were fed vegetables and crickets ad lib for 90 days, with or without dietary supplements (Tetra Vitalife and Reed's MVP). Group 4 lizards were fed an experimental dry lizard diet only for 90 days. Growth of lizards was followed by monitoring body weight and length, and was not significantly changed by any diet. However, the Vitolife and MVP supplements resulted in significantly increased serum levels of vitamin E and the experimental dry diet resulted in significantly decreased serum vitamin E compared to the lizards fed unsupplemented vegetables and crickets. Thiamin (vitamin B1) was significantly increased in lizards receiving the MVP supplement or the dry diet, compared to the unsupplemented lizards. Additional diet-related differences were observed and are presented. [author abstract]

PLEASE NOTE - All information in this FAQ/caresheet has come from our personal experience and/or research. We're working on adding links to useful information and places for further research - so please be patient with me. :) Many 'opinions', in many areas of care, vary from one person to another and can be controversial.... Please remember though, these are all opinions... and contained here are ours. Sources we found extremely useful when beginning our collection in Bearded dragons are - "The General Care and Maintenance of Bearded Dragons", written by Phillippe de Vosjoli and Robert Mailloux 1993.... and many, many knowledgable people willing to share their personal experiences.
General Description -
General Care - Bearded Dragons need little care, beyond daily maintenance, once they are established in/acclimated to their new environment. Care should certainly be taken to emulate their natural setting to reduce stress to the animal... As should a schedule be developed for lighting and feeding for the same purposes.

Sidney is our pet Bearded Dragon. He is named after the Baltimore Orioles pitcher Sidney Ponson . Captive-born and hand-raised, Sidney is a calm but occasionally active little guy. He is still a little timid around the other animals in the house, like Saucy Here are Sidney's other pages and page sections:
Technically speaking, Sidney is an Inland Bearded Dragon; by far the most common species found in the North American pet trade. The full taxonomic name for Sidney's species is:
phylum CHORDATA class REPTILIA subclass L EPIDOSAUROMORPHA order S QUAMATA infraorder Iguania (suborder Sauria family Agamidae species Pogona vitticeps
This picture was taken in late August 1999. Sidney came to live with Neal and Julie Ziring on August 2, 1999. Before that, he lived at House of Tropicals in Glen Burnie, MD [no web site yet] ; he was hatched by a Maryland reptile breeder in June, 1999.

I. DESCRIPTION:
This unusual mid-sized stocky agamid lizard has prominent spines along its sides and a large, essentially triangle-shaped head. Forming a sort of shield around the snout is a spiney jaw pouch which, when swollen, looks like a beard and makes any predator think twice before attacking. This wide-ranging species shows considerable geographic variation; its basic color varies from shades of brown, gray, and reddish-brown to bright orange. The ventral surface ranges from pale to dark gray, with white elongated spots edged with black. Mature males have dark "beards" which become black during courtship and breeding. Adults can grow as large as ten inches in body length or two feet in total length, including the tail. Males are larger than females.
II. GEOGRAPHICAL RANGE AND HABITAT:
These lizards are native to Central Australia. They prefer semi-arid to arid woodland habitats. Time is spent both on the ground and in trees. They may be found perched on bush branches and even on fence posts.

We think that the Bearded Dragon (the Pogona vitticeps)is one of, if not the greatest of all reptile pets. We just love them! We have the Inland Bearded Dragons and the Lawsons or Rankins Dragons. We also have a few other types of lizards, we also have the Argentina Red Tegu and a few geckos. Following is a list of most of our herps. Everytime we go to a herp show we add to our collection.
