THE CARE OF THE AUSTRALIAN BEARDED DRAGON, Pogona vitticeps Peter Weis, Herpetologist WEIS REPTILES Route 4, Box 468, Tallahassee, FL 32304-8615 The Inland Bearded Dragon, Pogona vitticeps , is becoming increasingly popular as a pet lizard in the U.S. Bearded dragons are among the tamest of all lizards, and their outgoing personalities, activity level, voracious appetites and interesting social behaviors make them a very captivating lizard to observe. They have a very rapid growth rate, so the 4" hatchlings can grow to their adult size within a year. Most bearded dragons adapt easily to handling and are calm enough to perch on their owner's shoulder, or be placed on a countertop, or enjoy the view from a windowsill. Care of hatchlings: Young hatchlings can be housed in a 10 gallon aquarium, with a 30-60 watt spotlight at one end above a basking rock. The wattage of the spotlight needs to be adjusted to allow the dragons to reach a body temperature of 100 degrees after basking under the light for an hour, as they need to get very warm to digest their food. Arrange the rocks and branches to provide several basking levels. Watch the hatchlings so you can arrange basking areas that they like to use. Arrange branches and add shelters so the hatchlings can choose from a range of temperatures and heights to maintain their optimum body temperature. . Bearded Dragon (Pogona Vitticepts) The Bearded Dragon is a moderate sized lizard, attaining a maximum length of about 22 inches (half of which is tail). This lizard is native to South and Central Australia. They are active during the day and seem to fall asleep within minutes of the lights going off in the evening. When these lizards are out in the wild, they spend most of their time perched on logs, rocks, and tree trunks, alert for the approach of any potential food item. They store nutrients in huge abdominal fat bodies, then dig into the ground and hibernate for long periods during unfavorable times. Female bearded dragons lay clutches of 15-25 eggs. The hatchlings grow rapidly and are usually 5 inches long by the end of their first month. There is both coloration and size variation among different races of bearded dragons. Coloration varies from a uniform tan to chocolate brown, with different hues on the head, throat, back and tail. Males tend to develop much broader heads and a larger black beard. Both sexes engage in stereotypical arm waving behavior to appease more dominant animals. This animal is becoming one of the most popular lizards in the pet trade. One of the good qualities which makes bearded dragons such an appealing pet lizard is that with minimal training, they will sit calmly for moderate periods of time in your hand or on your shoulder. Dragons are very mellow lizards, but if provoked they will exhibit an open-mouthed threat display. If this display is ignored, a bite may follow.

Although babies are quite expensive they make excellent first time lizards. DISTRIBUTION: Most of the eastern half of Australia plus the southern Northern territories. Their main habitat is semi arid areas. They are often seen basking on the sides of roads, on fence posts and fallen logs. HOUSING: Unless they can be housed in very large enclosures, Bearded Dragons should be kept in pairs . This is to avoid domination and aggression which can cause stress and ultimately death. I house my bearded dragons as pairs in a vivarium measuring 1.2M x 0.6M x 0.5M. Bearded Dragons require UV light mine is supplied using an Activa 172 UV tube with the starter enclosed by mesh on the back wall to provide a background heat source.A basking site on a rock is achieved by a 60W spotlight wire to a thermostat over it. A 20W heat mat is used to provide heating at night. The daytime background temperature is 28c, at the hot spot it is 40c. Night time temperatures are 24c. The substrate used is bird sand. DIET: Bearded dragons like a varied diet, this should included crickets, giant mealworms, locusts, plus dandelions(leaves and flowers), watercress, kale, broccoli and soft fruit. Every other meal should be supplemented with a calcium and or vitamin D3 containing powder i.e. Nutrobal. The babies have a varied diet with insects proportional to their size.

Send me an e-mail Heat and Lighting for Dragons When possible, the best source of heat and light is to keep the cage outdoors in the sunshine . Sunlight has excellent health benefits for your dragon. Your lizard will grow faster and become more colorful when kept outdoors. Also, sunshine will somehow help compensate for small mistakes in diet. Never keep your dragon outdoors in an aquarium tank. The heat will build up inside the tank and cook your dragon. You must use a cage made of wire outdoors. If keeping your dragon outdoors full-time during the summer is not possible, try to at least schedule some outside-time with your pet. Remember to keep your lizard away from dogs and cats, and avoid areas with lots of people who may not appreciate your pet. Artificial Sunlight Indoors, a full-spectrum fluorescent tube should be placed over the length of the enclosure. This is an artificial sun substitute which is very important for these sun loving lizards' health and behavior. I am often asked what the best brand of full-spectrum tube is. After having used most of the major brands and some relatively little known brands for the past several years, I can say that in my experience, it doesn't seem to matter- they will all work satisfactorally for your dragon, as long as you offer a good diet with sufficient supplementation. That's not to say that some tubes don't produce more UVB than others, because some do. But my dragons have done well under every brand I have tried, and healthy dragons being the goal which is reached by any brand, I now shop price, rather than UVB percentages.
