A Sloth of Bears A broadsheet of wood engraved devices from the first twenty-five years of the press October 2002 Our press device goes back to the first days of the press, when our friend Louis Turpin, a painter, drew the first version for us: a black bear carrying a handpress on his (or her) back. We decided on this device for a number of reasons. First, as Canadians in Britain, we were nostalgic for many things Canadian, and the black bear is certainly an important character in the Canadian woods. Second, Crispin at one time worked as a bearward at the Vancouver zoo, and has a great fondness for bears, regarding them as his personal totem. A Christmas Carol A Sloth of Bears is printed in red, blue and black on Zerkall White Wove paper, with all engravings printed from the original blocks. The types are Perpetua Light Titling and Van Dijck.

    The Sloth Bear
The sloth bear, Ursus ursinus , arose from the oldest lineage of the true bears. They diverged from the main lineage of bears about 6 million years ago. Like the giant panda, it is likely that climatic fluctuations were important in isolating ancestral sloth bears in the south of Asia long enough to diverge as a separate species. It is possible that a group of bears managed to colonize the Indian subcontinent either during a warm, interglacial period in the late Miocene era, or during one of the cold periods. Cold periods occurred at that time about every 100,000 years. In one scenario, we could imagine that after the ancestral sloth bears had occupied India, the climate cooled again and a wall of glaciers descended from the Himalayas that may have blocked any movement of bears in or out of India. Another possibility is that their ancestors moved south across eastern Asia during a cold period, perhaps as far as the edge of the Himalayas.

    SUBFAMILY URSINAE
    Ursus ursinus Meyer, 1793
From Ian Stirling, ed. Bears, Majestic Creatures of the Wild
Emmaus, Pennsylvania: Rodale Press, 1993. 240 pages.
APPEARANCE The sloth bear is small and usually black, with a long shaggy coat, especially over the shoulders. Brown and gray hairs may be mixed in with the dark coat, and cinnamon and reddish individuals have also been reported. It has a distinctive whitish or yellowish chest patch in the shape of a wide U, or sometimes a Y if the lower part of the white hairs extend down the chest. The snout is light colored and mobile. The nostrils can be closed voluntarily. It is thought that the reduced hair on the muzzle may be an adaptation for coping with the defensive secretions of termites.
SIZE Adults are 150 to 190 centimeters (60 to 75 inches) long. Males weigh 80 to 140 kilograms (175 to 310 pounds), and females weigh 55 to 95 kilograms (120 to 210 pounds).
HABITAT Sloth bears are found in forested areas and in grasslands, predominantly at lower elevations. They apparently favor drier forests and have been reported to prefer areas with rocky outcrops.
DISTRIBUTION Most sloth bears are found in India and Sri Lanka, but they have also been reported from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan.

Sloth Bears Toward the end of the eighteenth century the first pelts of the Sloth bear arrived in Europe. The name "bear Sloth" was quickly reversed to "Sloth bear " The typical Sloth bear has a long, shaggy, unkempt, blackcoat, and a prominent white or yellow chevron or y marking on its chest. The hair is longer and shaggier than other bears, particularly on the back of the neck and between the shoulders. The belly and underleg hair is sparse, possibly to help keep the animal cool on hot days. The bear has no front teeth, and the bony palate is hollowed out.The feet have white, blunt, curved claws up to three inches (7.6 cm)long. Sloth bears grow about six feet (1.8m) long, and stand three feet (91 cm) high at the shoulder. They have a 6-7 inch long tail Big males can weigh up to 300 pounds. Females are generally smaller. Somewhere between 7,000 and 10,000 Sloth bears are estimated to still exist in the world. They are found in the forested areas on the island of Sri Lanka and the Indian subcontinent, northward to the base of the Himalayas, and eastward to Assan. They are also known to occur in Nepal's Chitwan National Park. They were also common in India two decades ago, but today Sloth bears appear to be rapidly disappearing over most of their range. Sloth bears are mainly nocturnal, but can be active at any hour during the day. Their usual gait is a slow, shambling walk, but when frightened, they can break into a gallop, moving faster than a running person. They do not climb trees to escape danger, they simply play dead.

    Creation Ex Nihilo

From the thick stomach lining of the panda and the partially webbed paws of the polar bear, to the insect-sucking muzzle of the sloth bear, bears provide a fascinating example of the variety of specialized characteristics existing within one family. The bear family (Ursidae) consists of eight species, four of which are contained in the Ursus group: the brown bear, American black bear, Asiatic black bear and polar bear. Even within this group (known as a genus) the variation is wide. The brown and American black bears are mainly vegetarians with appropriate dental features for crushing plant material. However, the first has claws suited to digging while the other has claws more suitable for climbing. The Asiatic black bear, which also has claws for climbing, is an opportunistic omnivorous feeder (eating meat and plants as available). The polar bear, however, has some amazing features which allow it to function perfectly in its cold, wet environment. Much heavier than the above bears, it has two distinct hair types, one long and one short, which effectively is like having two coats. By increasing buoyancy, this helps it to swim, as does its long neck and the partial webbing between its toes. Its fur-covered foot pads provide better traction on the ice. Almost exclusively a meat eater (with teeth to suit such a diet), the polar bear also has a large stomach capacity for sporadic (opportunistic) feeding.

Yoganand has carried out the field studies on this project as a senior research fellow with the Wildlife Institute of India . Over the last ten years, he has worked in various forest areas of India studying the behavior and ecology of many species. Before taking up this study on sloth bear he studied the forest birds in Andaman islands and surveyed the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in southern India for small carnivores. He has an ardent interest in ants, birds, and carnivores. He also pursues his interest in surveying remote areas, developing population estimation techniques, designing field studies, and wildlife photography. He is currently at the Front Royal Conservation and Research Center under a fellowship from the Smithsonian National Zoological Park (Friends of the National Zoo). Dr. Clifford G. Rice, Ph.D.
