The Spectacled Bear
The last of the lineage of short-faced bears, the spectacled bear evolved as the sole bear species isolated in South America after the end of the last ice age. Spectacled bears are medium-sized by bear standards, but they are the second-largest land mammals in South America. Only the tapir is larger. Its name refers to the light-colored markings surrounding the eyes. One of its common names in Spanish means “bear with eyeglasses”; another means “the bromeliad eating bear”.
The evolutionary paths that this intriguing bear has followed to reach this niche are paralleled in complexity and variety by the actual trails across landscapes that its ancestors trod to reach their last stronghold in the Andes Mountains. From early Tremarctine (short-faced) bears in eastern Asia about 15 million years ago, this trail led across the Bering Land Bridge to what is now Alaska.

    Order: Carnivora
    Family: Ursidae
    Genus and Species: Tremarctos ornatus
South America's only bear, the spectacled bear lives in the Andes, inhabiting a variety of habitats. Physical Description: Whitish or cream "spectacles" ring this bear's eyes. The light color variably extends down to the throat and chest, giving each individual a unique set of markings. The spectacled bear's thick coat is usually either black or brown, rarely tinged with reddish.
Size: Spectacled bears grow five to six feet long and stand two to three feet high at the shoulder. Males grow up to 30 percent larger than females, and weigh up to 340 pounds. Females rarely grow heavier than 180 pounds.
Geographic Distribution: Spectacled bears live in the Andes range and outlying mountain ranges, from western Venezuela south to Bolivia. A few have been reported from eastern Panama and extreme northern Argentina.

Many Americans have inherited the attitude of early American mountain men who feared and sought to master the grizzly (Ursus arctos) . But far from being invulnerable monsters, grizzlies have declined rapidly in this century due to hunting and habitat destruction. The grizzly population can withstand few unnatural deaths because females reach reproductive age at a relatively late four to 10 years old and average only two cubs every four years. The eight species of bears range through the Arctic, North America, Europe, Asia, and South America. Species vary from the tropical sloth bear, which feeds on termites, ants, and fruits, to the seal-eating polar bear. One of the most familiar species is the black bear (Ursus americanus) , made popular by the cartoon drawing of Smokey Bear.

    Executive Summary
Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan: Bear
This status survey and conservation action plan describes the status and conservation needs of the eight bear species of the world. These species currently live in more than 65 countries/autonomous regions in four continents. They are a diverse group of large mammals living in a variety of habitats from tropical rain forests to arctic ice. Bears are the umbrella species in most of the ecosystems they inhabit. The conservation of bears and their habitats will preserve the most biodiversity in these areas and focus management efforts on preserving watershed resources that also sustain human populations. Conservation efforts for bears in North America and Western Europe are much more intensive and coordinated than in Asia or Latin America where research and management are minimal or nonexistent. The exception to this in Asia is the intensive conservation of the giant panda in China. The greatest threats to bears exist in Asia, the Middle East, and parts of South America. (Table 1). All bear species have declined in numbers and distribution due to the impacts of human activities. Major human activities that impact bears are habitat alteration and destruction resulting from forest conversion to agriculture, human settlement in bear habitat, and excessive forest harvest. Unregulated killing of bears for sport, sale of their parts in medicinal products, protection of crops or livestock, and fear of these powerful animals has led to their decline.

At Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo we're proud of Nick and Nora, our Spectacled Bears. Here are some quick facts about them: Nick is named after St. Nick because he was born on December 25, 1991. They are not "mommy and baby" but boy and girl (Nick is the larger one). Nora may look small but is a giant for a female Spectacled Bear, weighing just over 160 pounds. In order to get at the good stuff inside a coconut, Nora will stand on her hind legs and toss the coconut to the ground with her forepaws Pound for pound, bears have about six times the strength of humans. Nick weighs nearly 500 pounds, you do the math! Range:
This rare and elusive animal is the only South American bear species. These bears inhabit the foothills of the Andes Mountains from western Venezuela to Bolivia at altitudes of up to 14,000 feet.

Everyone expects units of the National Park Service to have bears! There are grizzlies in Glacier, black bears in Great Smokey, and Yellowstone has both. For those interested in Hagerman Fossil Beds you'll be glad to know that we do too. Of course. our bears are said to be more than 3 million years old so they don't eat much, which is a real advantage to the rangers because we don't have to worry about visitors feeding them. Unlike the other parks, our Hagerman bears are rare and won't be a common sight to visitors. In fact they are so rare that in the 65 years that paleontological research has been conducted here, only two bones have been found, a lower jaw and the part of the upper arm bone (humerus) that fits into the elbow joint. As you might imagine, with an animal this uncommon, there was quite a bit of excitement, when Hugh Harper, one of the park' s VIPs found another partial bear humerus while helping the park paleontologists conduct survey work on the monument. Comparison of our new find with illustrations in the scientific literature confirmed our initial suspicions. The new find is not from a relative of the black or grizzly bear, but rather is related to the Spectacled Bear that today lives in parts of northwestern South America. This is one of many animals found at the monument that forms part of our South American "connection".

There are eight different kinds of bears - brown bears, American black bears, polar bears, giant panda bears, Asiatic black bears, sloth bears, spectacled bears and sun bears.
    • Koala bears are not real bears. They are marsupials. More bears are dying each year than are being born. Polar bears and American black bears are safe now. All other kinds of bears need protection. We need to save large areas where bears and other animals can live safely and not be hurt.

American Black Bears Asiatic Black Bears Habitat (home) Mostly in forests, but also in swamps and deserts throughout North America. Prefer heavily forested areas, particularly in the hills and mountains and moist tropical forests in Southern Asia. Diet Plants, leaves, fruits, berries, nuts, roots, honey, insects, and small mammals. Insects, small mammals, birds, carrion, bee nests, and fruit. Feeding Enrichment and Stereotypic Behavior in Spectacled Bears. Abstract: The effect of feeding enrichment on the behavior of three spectacled bears (Tremarctor ornatus) was investigated in a large, complex zoo exhibit. Feeding enrichment significantly extended the time bears spent foraging, but no delayed effect on other behavior was found. The frequency of stereotypic behaviors performed by an old female and a young adult male was not influenced outside the morning feeding period. As yet, a young adult female has not developed stereotypic behaviors. In the old female, the frequency of stereotypic behavior was inversely correlated with the frequency of resting. In the male, the frequency of stereotypic behavior was inversely correlated with the frequency of social interactions with either female.

Tremarctos ornatus are the only bears to live in South America. Spectacled bears live along the slopes of the Andes mountains from Venezuela to Peru. Some have been found in eastern Panama and northern Argentina (Nowak, 1997; Ward and Kynaston, 1995). Native: Neotropical
    Physical Description
Spectacled bears are small, shaggy, and black. They have yellow rings around the eyes and often a lighter colored, usually cream, muzzle, throat, and chest. The markings are variable and can extend to the throat in some, the chest in others, or be totally absent. The coat ranges from black, brown, or even reddish in color. This species gets in name from the circles around the eyes which make the bears appear as though they are wearing spectacles. Females are 30%-40% smaller than males. These bears have plantigrade feet, where both the heel and toe touch the ground as they walk. One unique characteristic of these bears is that they have 13 pairs of ribs while other bear species have 14 pairs. The bear has white or cream-colored markings around its eyes and also on the throat and chest. The bear received the name Spectacled because the marking around the eyes make it appear to be wearing glasses. A heavy-bodied bear it usually weighs around 175 to 275 pounds (80 to 125 kg) some males even reaching 385 pounds (175 kg). Females are usually a little smaller than the males. Adult bears are about 30 inches (76 cm) high at the shoulder and usually about 4.5 to 6.5 feet long (130 to 190 cm). The Spectacled Bear is the only bear in South America. Its range extends along the Andes mountains in Venezuela, Columbia, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. A small population of the bears may also live in parts of Panama and Argentina.
Behavior : These bears are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day and sleep in ground beds or in trees at night. Their claws are adapted to climbing and they spend much of their time in trees, searching for food. It is believed that Spectacled Bears do not hibernate due to the year-round supply of food. The lifespan of a Spectacled Bears in the wild is estimated to be about 25 years or more.

They are about half the size of an American Black Bear . When standing they are only about 2.5 feet tall (70 cm). The fur is black with a large yellow or white U-shaped crescent on the chest. They are about 4 feet in length. Male sun bears weigh about 145 pounds (65 kg), and females weigh about 60 pounds (30 kg).
The Sun Bear is the only bear other than the Spectacled Bear that lives south of the equator. They sparsely populate tropical rain forests in southern China, Burma, Malaysia, Sumatra, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Borneo. Their habitat is declining rapidly because of human encroachment, and they could become extinct in the wild within the next few decades. Behavior : These bears are excellent climbers and spend considerable time in trees. They are primarily nocturnal, and there is no record of Sun Bears hibernating due to the year-round warm weather and availability of food. Though it is a small bear, they can be dangerous in close encounters

Geographic Range: Spectacled bears are found in the Andes Mountains of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru. Status: Vulnerable Threats to Survival: There are an estimated 2000 to 2400 remaining in the wild. The bears are endangered because of habitat loss. They are also hunted for their fur and meat. Even though it is illegal to hunt the bears, it is very difficult to enforce. Habitat: Historically found from dry coastal deserts, to rainforests, to treeless alpine areas above 4000 meters. Habits: Primarily vegetarian, the spectacled bear feeds on fruit and leaves. Captive Breeding: Gerald Durrell first brought a male spectacled bear, Pedro, to the Jersey Zoo in 1963. A female on loan from the Brookfield Zoo, Chicago, USA was successfully mated with Pedro and the first two litters were born in 1972 and 1974. 5 spectacled bears are currently in the Jersey collection.
