SUBFAMILY TREMARCTINAE
Tremarctos ornatus F.G. Cuvier, 1825
From Ian Stirling, ed. Bears, Majestic Creatures of the Wild
Emmaus, Pennsylvania: Rodale Press, 1993. 240 pages.
APPEARANCE The spectacled bear is small and dark, ranging in color from black to brown, and a few have a reddish tinge. It has distinctive circular or semicircular creamy white markings on the face around the eyes, reminiscent of specta cles. Lines and patches of white usually extend onto the throat and chest as well. The amount and pattern of the white markings can be quite variable.
SIZE There are few measurements available for this bear. However, the body length of adults is about 150 to 180 centimeters (60 to 72 inches) and males may be 30 to 40 percent larger than females. Males weigh 100 to 155 kilograms (220 t o 340 pounds) and females weigh 64 to 82 kilograms (140 to 180 pounds). At birth, cubs weigh from 300 to 360 grams (10 to 11 1/2 ounces).
HABITAT Spectacled bears are highly adaptable and are found in a wide range of habitats, including rainforest, cloud forest, dry forest, steppe lands, and coastal scrub desert. Possibly because of loss of habitat and persecution by huma ns, they appear to be more common in heavy forest. They have been reported at altitudes ranging from about 180 to 4,200 meters (600 to 13,800 feet) but prefer moist forests between about 1,800 and 2,700 meters (6,000 and 8,800 feet). No populations have been documented from areas that lack bromeliads and fruits.

Habitat spectacled bears are found in Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Panama, Braziland Argentina. And they stay way up in the Andes mountains from 6000 ft.
http://www.ankn.uaf.edu/Marshall/bbb/bears/SpectacledBear.html
Spectacled Bear Habitat: Spectacled bears are found in Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Panama, Brazil and Argentina. And they stay way up in the Andes mountains from 6000 ft. to 13,800 ft., above the snow line. Body: They have light-colored rings around their eyes which look like eyeglasses. The bears have fewer ribs than other bears, only 13 pairs of ribs. They are 7.25 ft long and have a short tail. They also have powerful jaws. Hibernation: They hibernate way up the Andes mountains starting in June. When they hibernate they have one to three cubs between November and February. Reproduction: They teach their young how to live on their own and to survive. They show them how to catch food, where to get it and how to get it. Food: They eat fruit, sugarcane, corn and honey. They also eat plants, leaves, palm nuts, cactus and bromeliad hearts. They also eat other animals if they have to. Spectacled Bear
. . . . . Tremarctos ornatus SIZE: Adult males weigh 250-300 pounds and can grow to 5-6 feet in length and stand 30" at shoulder. Females are smaller and weigh 150-200 pounds. RANGE: Wooded, mountainous regions of Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, and western Bolivia; also reported in eastern Panama and northern Argentina. Because they live along the slopes of the Andes Mountains at altitudes from 2,000-14,000 ft., are sometimes known as Andean Bears. HABITAT: The spectacled bear occupies a variety of habitats. It prefers the humid forests located between 6,200 and 7,700 feet and coastal thorn forests when water is present. It also uses high altitude grasslands. Currently reduced to the Andean slopes due to human encroachment on other habitats. DIET: Omnivorous, but eat little or no meat. At least 95% of their diet consists of fruits, palm stalks, new leaves, bamboo shoots, bromeliad bulbs, and cactus fruit. Occasionally eat rabbits, ants, mice, birds, llamas, and domestic cattle. LIFE SPAN: May live about 20 years in the wild and from 20 to 36 years in captivity.

Spectacled Bear
Tremarctos ornatus
Spectacled bears get their name from the light colored rings around their eyes that makes some of the bears look like they are wearing glasses. These shy bears are the only species that live in South America. Little is known about these rare bears because of a lack of research and the remoteness of the areas where they live.
Habitat
  • Spectacled bear habitat includes coastal and inland deserts, dry forests, rainforests, cloud forests, steppes, and plateaus. They tend to inhabit areas that are isolated and inhospitable and avoid humans whenever they can. Spectacled bears prefer the warm humid and foggy clouds that are above the rainforest floor at higher elevations.
Distribution
  • Spectacled bears live in South America on the heart of the Andes in Venezuela, Columbia, and the coastal foothills of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
Pysical Characteristics
Color
  • They have black to brown shaggy fur with distinct white or yellow markings on their face around their eyes.

And when he wanted help in highlighting his cause, Stephen, a long-time and very vocal Mac user, turned to his friends at Apple. They agreed to design and maintain a spectacular Web site, www.bear-rescue.tv , crammed with information about the bears, their environment and the making of the TV programme, and including activities for children. The lucky Apple employee who actually got to accompany Stephen Fry and the film crew on their Peruvian adventure was Mike Matson. Mike subsequently designed the Web site, using footage which he had taken himself during the trip. QuickTime , and the bear-rescue.tv site makes extensive use of this, allowing the visitor to listen to conversations between Stephen Fry and various crew members, listen to music from the programme and even enjoy a mini travelogue of the area. www.apple.com/uk/quicktime

Tremarctos Ornatus Physical Characteristic: Male Spectacled Bears can weigh between 280-44O pounds, while females are much smaller, only weighing 80-145 pounds. Their body length is 4-6 feet, with a 2 3/4" tail in most cases. Probably their best known characteristic is their yellowish brown markings which encircle their eyes, resembling spectacles. These markings can vary between individual bears. Habits: Although Spectacled Bears have been observed in family groups, they are primary solitary animals. They are excellent climbers and are known to forage and build large nests in the trees, which are used as day-beds. Unlike other bears, who go in a deep sleep for part of the year, these bears remain active year round. Diet: Although these bears exhibit a highly herbivorous diet, they still are considered omnivores. They feed largely on succulent Bromeliad hearts, petioles of palm fronds, fruits and cacti. They also eat insects, carrion and occasionally domestic cattle, deer, llamas and guanacos (wild llamas). Habitat: They prefer altitudes ranging between 650-14,000 feet. Although humid forests are their first choices as habitat, grasslands and lower lying scrub deserts are also used.

BEARS OF THE WORLD Fossil records and historical data indicate that at one time there may have been hundreds of bear species worldwide, on all continents except Antarctica and Australia. Today, eight bear species remain in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. All of the bears found at the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary are American black bears ( Ursus americanus). Below you will find a photo and a brief description of each of the other seven species. For additional information, see the Additional Reading page. The status of each species is listed, according to the International Union for Conservation's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species for the year 2000. For complete listings and criteria, please visit http://www.redlist.org.
ASIATIC BLACK BEAR ( Selenarctos thibetanus)
Description: This species is similar in size and appearance to the American black bear, although the fur is longer, soft, and shaggy. Adult males weigh from 200 to 255 pounds (92-116 kg.) and adult females weigh between 110 and 225 pounds(50-102 kg.). The Asiatic black bear is an excellent tree climber, as are most of the bear species. Its predominantly herbivorous diet resembles that of its American cousin: plants, fruits, insects, bees' nests, and invertebrates are preferred foods. The most obvious difference between the two species is the chest blaze. This feature is found in about 25% of American black bears, and can vary in size and shape. In contrast, nearly all Asiatic black bears have cream-colored chest blazes in a crescent shape, giving the species its other common name: "moon bear."

The common name is spectacled bear. The scientific name is Tremarctos Ornatus. They live in South American in the mountains. There are not very many spectacled bears in the world. They live up in the mountains (Andes Mountains), near the ocean in cloud forest. They live in both sunny and cold weather. They live in forests. They eat several different animals (rabbits, deer, rodents, insects), fruit (apples, oranges, bananas), and vegetables (carrots, sweet potatoes). They are excellent tree climbers, good at finding honey, they sleep in nests in trees. They usually have two cubs, the male bear sometimes kills their cubs. They build feeding platforms because they are too big to sit on branches to eat fruit. Males live by themselves. The males mate with the female. After the female has her cubs, the male leaves and they usually don't see each other again. The cubs live with their moms until they're two and a half years old. Then they leave and hunt for themselves and never see each other again. The females have their cubs (usually 1 to 4) in late winter or early spring. People are invading their habitat and shooting them (hunters are called poachers). Sometimes the bear walks off into another habitat and can't survive.

Spectacled Bear Spectacled bears inhabit the Andes Mountains, ranging from Venezuela and Colombia south through Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. They primarily live in forest ecosystems, including rainforest, cloud forest, and dry forest, but they can also be found in more open ecosystems such as steppes or coastal scrub desert. Spectacled bears are excellent tree-climbers, and they often use trees as feeding platforms and build nests in them for sleeping. They feed on a variety of fruits, berries, and plant matter, in addition to small mammals, such as rabbits, birds, and mice. Spectacled bears get their name from the distinctive cream-colored bands that encircle their eyes. Their fur is brown or black. Like most other bear species, spectacled bears are threatened by both habitat loss and illegal poaching for parts. Logging and human encroachment within the spectacled bear's range are the major causes of habitat loss. Spectacled bears are predominantly solitary and require numerous acres of untouched land to thrive. Although hunting is illegal, poaching continues to decrease spectacled bear populations. Enforcement of hunting bans is difficult due to the bear's isolated habitat and the lack of anti-poaching units to protect the bears. With only a few thousand in the wild, the spectacled bear is protected under Appendix I of CITES.

Bears of the World Click on the links below to learn about each of the world's eight bear species and the conservation issues they face. American Black Bear
Native only to North America, the black bear is highly adaptable. It can be found in habitats as diverse as the humid bayous of Louisiana, the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest, and the tundras of Labrador. ( Learn More Asiatic Black Bear
Medium-sized and predominantly black, the Asiatic black bear is similar to its American cousin. This bear, however, has a white patch of fur on its chest, which is often shaped like a "V." These bears can be found throughout southern Asia, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Northern India and Burma. ( Learn More Brown Bear
Brown bears enjoy the most extensive distribution of any bear species. They can be found throughout North America and Eurasia, including Japan and the former Soviet Union. They prefer river valleys, mountain forests, open meadows and tundra. ( Learn More Giant Panda
The giant panda was long thought to be part of the raccoon family because of characteristics similar to the red panda. However, scientists have officially classified it as a bear since 1995. The giant panda has several adaptations that distinguish it from other species in the bear family. (

    58. Got Questions?: Do You Have Sloth Bears At The Zoo?
sloth bears. They were here for many years, but the Zoo now has sunbears, polar bears, brown bears, spectacled bears, and pandas.
    http://www.sandiegozoo.org/wildideas/kids/got_questions_sloth_bear.html
Gabi Currently the San Diego Zoo doesn't have any sloth bears. They were here for many years, but the Zoo now has sun bears, polar bears, brown bears, spectacled bears, and pandas. Sloth bears are very cute, with their long fur that always seems to be sticking out in all directions. They also have a unique way of eating: they find a termite nest, dig it open, blow the dust off, then actually suck up the termites like a vacuum cleaner! Their mouths are specially formed so they can make a "tube" to suck up the insects, and they can close off their nostrils so no termites crawl up their nose. Sloth bears are not actually listed as endangered, but they are listed as "vulnerable" to extinction and as a species that needs conservation help. They are losing more and more of their habitat to logging and human settlement, but one of the biggest threats to their survival is that people kill them and sell their body parts. In some parts of the world, sloth bear paws are considered something special to eat, and sloth bear gall bladders are used in some types of traditional Asian medicines. One of the best things you can do for sloth bears is to talk to people you know and explain what is happening to these bears. If people didn't eat them and didn't use the bears' body parts for medicines, more sloth bears would be around for us to admire. Sloth bear parts aren't sold in the United States much, but they are popular in Asian countries. Perhaps your school could find a school in India to be pen pals with, and you could write to them about your concerns, so they can spread the word in their country.

    Description
The entire coat is uniformly black or dark brown shaggy fur, except for large semicircles of white around the eyes and a white semicircle on the lower side of the neck, from which lines of white extend onto the chest. The common name is derived from the white around the eyes. The head and chest markings are variable, however, and may be completely lacking in some individuals. It has a comparatively large skull equipped with strong teeth and powerful jaws. They have only 13 pairs of ribs, one less than other bears. Adult females weigh from 175 to 275 pounds and stand about 30 inches at the shoulder when on all fours. Average lengths are between 4.25 and 6.25 feet. Males are larger and more robust, attaining weights up to 385 pounds and lengths of over 7.25 feet, not including a short tail about three inches long.
