Making a Film about Bears In the "Make a movie" section of this website you can be a movie producer and make a film by re-ordering the video clips. But it took far more than just one person to make the BBC television programme. The section of the website on Making the film has multimedia presentations where the team of people who made the documentary talk about the film and their roles. Listen to what each member of the team has to say and answer the following questions. Producer's name ……………………….

Maned Wolf Spectacled Bear Animal Facts The largest carnivore on land, a male polar bear can grow to 10 feet in length and weigh more than 1,000 pounds. Clever hunters, polar bears have been known to slink along the arctic snow and ice, covering their black nose with a paw in order to sneak up on unsuspecting seals. The Malayan sun bear is named for the sunburst-shaped marking on its chest. It uses its sickle-like talons to dig for termites and other insects, lapping them up with its 10-inch-long tongue. The spectacled bear of South America gets its name from the distinctive markings around its eyes, which resemble a pair of eyeglasses.

Brown Bears
Description: One of the largest and most widely distributed bear species, brown bears weigh between 300 and 860 pounds and can be up to 9'6" in total body length. They are usually dark brown in color but can vary from a light cream color to almost black. If the tips of the guard hairs are white, they give the bear a grizzled appearance, hence the term Grizzly bear , applied to the smaller of the two North American subspecies, Ursus arctos horribilis. The larger North American subspecies is Ursus arctos middendorffi, the Kodiak bear of the Alaskan islands of Kodiak, Shuyak and Afognak. Brown bears are distinguished by the characteristic muscle hump over the shoulders, they have a "dished" profile and longer claws on their front paws than on their rear paws. Range:
In North America, they can be found in western Canada, Alaska, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Washington. In Europe, they live east of the Stanovoi Range in Russia and in extremely fragmented population in France, Spain, Italy, and Greece. Other small remnant populations can be found in India, Pakistan, Japan, Korea, China, Mongolia, Syria, Iraq, Iran and Turkey.
Habitat:
Brown bears inhabit dense forests, tundra and lower alpine mountain regions.

http://animal.discovery.com/fansites/jeffcorwin/expedition/expedition.html
Greetings from Peru! By Maryalice Yakutchik Lima, Peru The endangered Tremarctos ornatus But the bears' situation is dire. They might not hang on too long. That's why it's lucky for South America's only species of "oso" (bear) that Jeff Corwin's coming to town, armed with a camera crew and seeking solutions. Who better, I ask you, to take this bear-of-a-task (both biologically and politically) by the horns? And what an appropriate place to start: Lima, site of the famed Acho Bullfight Ring, oldest in America. Corwin flies in tonight, touching down in this capital barely long enough to taste a sip of the El Pardo Hotel's complimentary Pisco Sour, a concoction consisting of lemon juice, sugar, egg white and pisco: a grape brandy fermented in clay jugs that is the national libation of Peru. Tomorrow morning, bright and early, he and his film crew (and me, too) are catching an hour-long flight and heading southeast to Cusco. The setting: the Andes Mountains, a range so high it's second only to the Himalayas in elevation. The co-star: a medium-sized bear, second in size only to tapirs in terms of South American mammals. They may look little (compared to grizzlies, for instance), but they require a mighty range. Spectacled bears are considered an "umbrella species," an index of the health of the 83 diverse ecosystems that make up Peru. Just a couple decades ago, some 20,000 spectacled Bears lived here. But their habitat has been hacked away at. Farmers persecute the bears as pests. Poisoning by pesticide is all too common. Though legally protected, the bears are poached for their meat. Today, the population is believed to number less than 1,000. That's not many. Not many at all.

Some bears may not hibernate in the true sense, but will become less active during this time, usually during the winter months. It is not known if all bears hibernate in the wild.
