Bears of the World Click on the links below to learn about each of the world's eight bear species and the conservation issues they face. American Black Bear
Native only to North America, the black bear is highly adaptable. It can be found in habitats as diverse as the humid bayous of Louisiana, the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest, and the tundras of Labrador. ( Learn More Asiatic Black Bear
Medium-sized and predominantly black, the Asiatic black bear is similar to its American cousin. This bear, however, has a white patch of fur on its chest, which is often shaped like a "V." These bears can be found throughout southern Asia, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Northern India and Burma. ( Learn More Brown Bear
Brown bears enjoy the most extensive distribution of any bear species. They can be found throughout North America and Eurasia, including Japan and the former Soviet Union. They prefer river valleys, mountain forests, open meadows and tundra. ( Learn More Giant Panda
The giant panda was long thought to be part of the raccoon family because of characteristics similar to the red panda. However, scientists have officially classified it as a bear since 1995. The giant panda has several adaptations that distinguish it from other species in the bear family. (

65. Wild New Jersey - Human Nature By Lynda Hester D'Orio. Black Bears
with an article at New Jersey Fish, Game and wildlife website at www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/and found some incredible information on wild bears in New Jersey.
http://www.wildnj.com/ld14.htm
Black Bears in New Jersey involved in 4 attacks
March 26, 1999
We've all heard of the recent incident involving the tiger in Jackson that got loose and met it's untimely death. That story stuck a note with many of you who wrote to us and let us know your feelings on the subject. A few weeks after this incident, from out the blue, I was driving on Rt. 287 and heard a report on 101.5 that a wild bear had attacked a Llama in Morris County and had to be tranquilized. I was curious what happened to the bear after that, so I called the New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife and inquired about its plight. I spoke to Bob Erikson, a knowledgeable biologist who deals directly with this problem and on the afternoon of March 25th at 2:00PM, he took a few moments to speak with me about Black bears in New Jersey. He told me he had a bear in custody as we spoke and that there had been 4 incidents of bears attacking livestock in Blairstown and in Lafayette in Sussex County. The bears involved killed a Llama, 4 goats and 11 chickens. As I spoke to Bob, he was on his way out to release a bear. I asked him to tell me what would happen to it. Their policy is to destroy any wild bear that is caught killing an animal on sight. If the bear is not seen killing, (like the one they had in custody) they will trap it and give it one chance in case it is not a livestock killer. The bear is tagged and given a radio collar to follow its movements. It is moved from its base, 20-30 miles away and then released. They are sprayed with strong pepper spray, (which Bob related is most unpleasant for them and the handlers to inhale) and exploding shots are used to scare the bear away from them as it's released to a new habitat. These are humane efforts to give the bear a chance. Bob said bears had good memories, and these efforts are to keep it away from where it experienced trouble.

processes. The information in this section highlights bears and properfood storage both in the wilderness and at the trailhead.
http://www.nps.gov/yose/wilderness/bears.htm
Natural History Bears Food Storage Wildlife Safety Natural History The varied topography of Yosemite's wilderness hosts about 1,460 species of plants in over 40 recognized plant communities. These, in turn, are home to numerous invertebrate and vertebrate species, including 78 species of mammals, 247 of birds, 17 of amphibians, 22 of reptiles, 11 of fish, and numerous invertebrates. Wilderness users must understand they are visitors to the homes of these residents and behave in ways that do not upset or destroy their balance of life. Consequences of improper human behavior to the inhabitants or their habitat can be extremely destructive if not deadly. Campfires above 9600', for instance, eliminates necessary habitat and nesting sites. Feeding wildlife, either intentionally or not, encourages unnatural and potentially dangerous behavior and disrupts normal ecological processes. The information in this section highlights bears and proper food storage both in the wilderness and at the trailhead. Wilderness users must take similar care in everything they do in the backcountry to minimize their impact on the natural systems there. Users should also be aware of potential threats to themselves and learn more about mountain lions, poison oak, lyme disease, rattlesnakes or other hazards. http://www.nps.gov/yose/wilderness/bears.htm

C O N T E M P O - G U M M I S Brach's Wild n' Fruity Gummi Bears Brach'sthe name that we all recall from our early years in the supermarket with momthrows its hat in the ring with Wild n' Fruity Gummi Bears. Brach's scores high points for visual appearance. Each bear has a distinctive smile, small arms, and teensy foot pads. The colors are vividespecially vibrant are the green and orange. (The strides made on this front are particularly important when compared with all other bear-shaped gummis. Other green and orange gummi bears regularly have a "watered down Kool Aid" appearance.) The taste of the Brach's seems to fall into the traditional "American lollipop" flavor, with a slight variation in taste from color to colorbut after five they all taste the same. The texture is a bit too soft, a bit too "fresh." These bears are flaccid. Brach's needs to remember that the rubbery consistency of gummis is not a negative trait. Remember those Brach's candies with the pink, brown and white layers? We feel the same way about Wild n' Fruity Gummi Bears: No need to stop the shopping cart, mom.

Grizzly
Grizzly bears once roamed across much of the United States. Today, these awe-inspiring bruins can only be found in places such as Yellowstone and Glacier National Park. Habitat destruction, poaching, road building and off-road vehicle operations are some of the greatest threats to these animals' survival. Sean pays tribute to the Grizzly in this wonderful piece called "Lunch Time"

All About Bears
There are 8 different kinds of bears - American black bears, polar bears, giant panda bears, Asiatic black bears, sloth bears, spectacled bears, sun bears and brown bears which are also known as grizzly bears. Where Do Bears Live?
42 states
. They also inhabit 11 Canadian provinces . Grizzly bears (also known as brown bears) and polar bears also inhabit North America. The most common bear in Idaho is the Ursus americanus otherwise known as the American black bear. Baby bears are called cubs, female bears are called sows and male bears are called boars Bears in Idaho
People who live in Idaho are lucky to share their forests with a few grizzlies and a lots of black bears. As many as 20,000 black bears inhabit Idaho , but if you go looking for truly black bears, you might be surprised! In Idaho, you are as likely to see a black bear that is brown as you are to see a black bear that is black. Black bears that live in the western states are often various shades of brown similar to grizzly bears.

People and Bears
Even though thousands of bears live in Idaho, people seldom see these shy "shadows of the forest" unless they are careless about their garbage or they hunt. In 1990, more than 15,000 hunters searched for black bear in Idaho; around 2,000 hunters find a bear each year. Wildlife managers monitor bears that live in hunting areas to make sure that the bear population can withstand the hunting. They also keep watch on how much bear habitat is lost each year and report that habitat loss is the biggest problem that bears face. Bears, like all wild animals, must share most of their habitat with humans. People enter bear habitat to hike, ride horses, fish, hunt, ski, and snowmobile. They also cut timber, graze cows and sheep, and operate mines in the same forests where black bears live. Biologists and wildlife managers strive to understand how bears use their habitat and how they react to human presence. For example, by studying how bears use logged forests, biologists and managers can recommend logging practices that have less impact on bears. They have learned that bears continue feeding in fields rich with berries if logging ceases during this time. Bears are more likely to return to a disturbed area if it is small, irregularly shaped and trees are left along streams, roads, and north slopes.
