FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH - LIMO RE-ESTABLISHED
The LIMO project, first established in 1998, is an educational partnership between the British Limousin Cattle Society and Greenmount College, Antrim. The original aims of the project were to:
  • Assess the physical and financial performance of pure and crossbred Limousin cows and the growth and carcase quality of their progeny. Develop the competences of students in all aspects of management, recording and marketing of pedigree and commercial beef cattle.
The unexpected depopulation of the herd in January 2001 as a result of brucellosis, while unfortunate, provided both partners with the challenge of re-establishing the LIMO herd and the opportunity to review progress and re-evaluate the project aims. Early in the review exercise it became evident that the beef industry is increasingly incorporating Limousin genes into the suckler cow herd and that 'maternal traits' are becoming increasingly important.

Selection of Beef Cattle Breeds
Cow size and growth Milk production Adaptability and hardiness Carcass Composition ... The availability of management resources Adapted from Alberta Agriculture Beef Herd Management Reference Binder and Study Guide - 201 Increased efficiency in beef production by genetic methods depends primarily on two procedures:
  • Selection of breeds that complement each other so that an optimum level of production can be achieved.
  • Selection within each breed for critical production traits, in order that only superior animals are used for breeding.
These criteria, together with a breeding system geared to increase productivity within a workable management climate, produce optimum results. Over the last 15 years, much of the research done on crossbreeding has shown a definite advantage in using crossbreds over straight breeds, Different breeds can therefore be used in crossbreeding systems to utilize heterosis, synchronize more effectively the production characters among beef cattle, produce animals better adapted to a climate and nutritive environment and be consistent with the market requirements (salable product). This makes the system efficient and productive. In selecting beef cattle breeds to optimize production efficiency, consider the following factors:
  • Cow size and growth
  • Milk production of dams
  • Adaptability and hardiness
  • Carcass composition
  • The availability of management resources
Cow size and growth
Cow size is an important consideration in breed selection. Size affects growth, weight gain, milk production and the cost of feeding. Studies in general indicate that cow size becomes critical when feed becomes limited. The maintenance requirements for large cows are higher than requirements for small cows and this becomes critical in Alberta due to the long winters. A Charolais or Simmental cross needs 10 to 30 percent more energy for maintenance than does an Angus X Hereford cross. In areas where moisture limits pasture growth and feed availability, a smaller sized cow is preferred. However, where nutrition is not liiting, cows that are slightly above average prove to be the most economical and productive. Table 1 provides a provisional classification of beef breeds relative to size and mild production.

    Introduction
The proper nutrition of beef cattle is a key component of a successful production system. Feed usually accounts for the single largest input cost associated with beef cattle. An understanding of the ruminant digestive process and basic nutrition is required for effective feeding and management. Top of Page
    Digestive System
Cattle belong to a class of animals called ruminants. This group includes sheep, goats and deer. Ruminants have a digestive system which allows them to utilize roughages (e.g. hay, grass) as a major source of nutrients. These animals have a large (capacity up to 50 gal.), fluid filled digestive organ at the beginning of the digestive tract called the rumen. The rumen contains a large population of microbes (bacteria and protozoa). Much of the initial digestion of feed is done by microbes in the rumen. These microbes have the ability to break down cellulose and hemicellulose, which are main components of roughages. Rumen microbes also break down other components of the animal's diet such as protein and starch. The reticulum is a smaller organ which acts as a holding area for feed after it passes down the esophagus. The omasum is an organ which absorbs water from the digesta (mixture of feed and fluid) before it flows into the abomasum (true stomach). The animal's own digestive enzymes break down food in the abomasum and small intestine. Absorption of these nutrients occurs mainly through the small intestine

    Increased Livestock Production through Nutrition...
Ruminant Nutritionist, Chuck Hurst, has over 30 years of experience helping producers increase their livestock productivity through nutrition. Maximizing nutritional needs is a primary tool for sustained profitability in livestock production today. Through nutritional consultation and supplementation, Nutritech and Chuck Hurst can help you maximize your operation's herd health and profits.

    • MSE An all natural (certified organic) microbial and enzyme containing substrate used in inoculation of ruminant feed. Much more than a probiotic, university trials show use of MSE significantly increases performance in beef daily gain, feed conversion, carcass weight and carcass quality over the use of ionophores and antibiotics such as Rumensen/Tylan combinations, particularly when using high fiber, marginal protein feeds.
    • Nutritional Services Chuck Hurst is a Consulting Ruminant Nutritionist with experience in cow-calf, stocker, feeder, feedlot and range beef operations, as well as sheep and wildlife ruminant species. Profitability and economics of wintering, and breeding cows; backgrounding calves, and feedlot finishing cattle. Emphasis on least cost purchasing of feedstuffs and supplements. Health management of all phases of beef cattle production. Nutritech is also familiar with supplementing wildlife species including elk and deer; also in formulating bison growing and finishing rations.

The purpose of all Emission Estimation Technique (EET) Manuals in this series is to assist Australian manufacturing, industrial and service facilities to report emissions of listed substances to the National Pollutant Inventory (NPI). This Manual describes the procedures and recommended approaches for estimating emissions from facilities engaged in the operation of Beef Cattle Feedlots. A beef feedlot is a confined area with watering and feeding facilities where cattle are completely hand or mechanically fed for the purpose of production (ARMCANZ, 1997). Feedlot operations consist of a number of activities including feedstock storage, feeding systems, animal housing, disposal of biological matter, waste removal/storage and waste treatment.
