Greenhouse emissions from beef cattle
Livestock produce methane (CH ) and nitrous oxide (N O). Both are very potent greenhouse gasses, methane having a global warming potential 21 times that of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide 310 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide.
Greenhouse gas emissions from livestock
Enteric fermentation: Methane is produced as a by-product of the digestion of feed in the rumen of cattle under anaerobic conditions. The amount of methane emitted by cattle is dependent primarily on the characteristics of the feed and the amount eaten. Manure: Both methane and nitrous oxide can be produced from manure under certain management conditions. Emissions from the manure of range-kept cattle are considered negligible. N O emissions from the soil do occur with the deposition of manure, however these emissions are considered agricultural soil emissions and are not attributed to livestock in the inventory.

Production:
Marketings:
As Manitoba's cattle slaughter industry has declined from a peak of 581,000 head in 1976 to 15,950 head in 2001, most of the beef cattle produced in Manitoba are sold out of the province. In 2001, about 202,200 slaughter cattle and 12,800 feeder cattle, valued at $255.6 million, were exported from Manitoba ports of exit to the United States, while almost 31,000 slaughter cattle and an estimated 321,000 feeder cattle and calves were sold mainly to Alberta and Ontario. Close to 13,900 slaughter cattle and 64,500 feeder cattle were brought into Manitoba from Saskatchewan in 2001, many of which were subsequently exported.
Beef Processing and Trade:
Two small federally-inspected plants slaughtered about 6,525 cattle in 2001, while 9,425 head were killed in 25 provincially-inspected plants in Manitoba. Beef production was estimated at 12.2 million lb. (carcass weight) valued at $21 million. Beef and beef products valued at $5.3 million were exported in 2001 with most of the exports going to the United States. Smaller quantities of beef were shipped to Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, Chile and China. Much of the beef consumed in Manitoba comes from Alberta or the United States. Almost 2,900 feeder cattle were imported into Manitoba from the U.S. in 2001, while beef valued at $12.7 million and raw hides valued at $9.4 million were imported from the U.S. and other countries in 2001.

Home Students Research Facilities ... Contact Info Overview Extension programs are coordinated through a four-year plan of work established by a design-team approach, based on needs identified by county faculty and their local advisory committees. Animal Science Department faculty participate on several design teams including: - Florida Forage Production for Livestock and Dairy
- Improving the Production, Efficiency, and Marketability of Beef Cattle in Florida
- Food Processing and Handling in Florida: Quality, Value-Added Concepts and Safety
- Small Farm Sustainable Agriculture Alternative Opportunities and Crops in Florida
- Animal Sciences Education Faculty also work closely with industry groups including several livestock associations, Florida Farm Bureau, and others to develop educational programs for their members. Schools, institutes, demonstrations, short courses, and field days are some of the activities resulting from the plan of work. Extension activities are viewed as a responsibility of the entire department, and faculty, other than those with extension appointments, contribute to these activities. Several groups of county faculty such as the South Florida Beef Forage Program, plan programs for their region and coordinate multi-county livestock field research and demonstration projects, supported by both departmental and Research and Education Center faculty. Extension faculty in the department and centers provide both support and leadership to youth livestock projects and conduct statewide activities for 4-H and FFA youth.

Breeding Better Beef Cattle
PRINCIPLES FOR BEEF CATTLE BREEDING PROGRAMS
Expected progeny differences (EPDs) have been available for use in beef cattle selection programs since the early 1970's. Advancements in computer technology and breed registries collecting vast amounts of pedigree and performance information has made the production of EPDs possible for virtually every animal within a breed. With the cost of beef cattle production continually rising relative to cattle market prices, producers are using every available piece of information to increase their bottom line. Understanding and implementing the use of EPDs in beef cattle selection programs allows producers to have more control in developing the product they have to market. However, gaining an understanding of EPDs and how they can be successfully used is no trivial task.
Expected Progeny Differences (EPD)
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) may be used to estimate how future progeny of the subject animal will compare to progeny of other animals within the breed.
Select breedstock by EPDs
The best tool the beef industry has at its disposal for making genetic progress is the Expected Progeny Difference (EPD). It has been suggested that EPDs are five to nine times more accurate than performance indexes when selecting seedstock.
