What is Behcet's syndrome?
Behcet's syndrome is classically characterized as a triad of symptoms that include recurring crops of mouth ulcers (called apthous ulcers), genital ulcers, and inflammation of a specialized area around the pupil of the eye, the uvea. The inflammation of the area of the eye that is around the pupil is called uveitis. Behcet's syndrome is also sometimes referred to as Behcet's disease. The cause of Behcet's syndrome is not known. The disease is more frequent and severe in patients from the Eastern Mediterranean and Asia than those of European descent. Both inherited (genetic) and environmental factors, such as microbe infections, are suspected to be factors that contribute to the development of Behcet's syndrome. Behcet's syndrome has not been felt to be contagious. What are symptoms of Behcet's syndrome?

Behcet's disease is a rare, chronic, lifelong disorder that involves inflammation of blood vessels throughout the body. Symptoms of Behcet's disease include recurrent oral ulcers (resembling canker sores), recurrent genital ulcers, and eye inflammation. The disorder may also cause various types of skin lesions, arthritis, bowel inflammation, and meningitis (inflammation of the membranes of the brain and spinal cord). Behcet's disease generally begins when patients are in their 20s or 30s, although all age groups may be affected. Behcet's is a multisystem disease; it may involve all organs and affect the central nervous system, causing memory loss and impaired speech, balance, and movement. The effects of the disease may include blindness, stroke, swelling of the spinal cord, and intestinal complications. Treatment for Behcet's disease is symptomatic and supportive. Medication may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and/or regulate the immune system. Behcet's disease is a lifelong disorder which proceeds over a long period of time in a series of remissions (lack of disease activity) and exacerbations (periods of active disease). The disease is serious and painful but it is not fatal. Contact:

ICD-10 / DA-3: Synonyms: BS, BD, Definition - Keywords: This aphthous stomatitis ocular inflammation , and genital ulcerations Epidemiology: and the presenting age is usually between 15 and 45 years. There seems to have been an increased incidence during the last decades. Aetiology and pathogenesis: The aetiology is unknown. Infections due to virus, bacteria and mycoplasma have been discussed, and lately autoimmunity. The basic pathological mechanism seems to be a deposition of circulating immune complexes in small vessels, causing vasculitis. Clinical features: Oral lesions are present in 90% of the cases ( Fig. 3033 ) . These are indistinguishable from those of RAU , and include all three forms of ulceration - MiAU, MjAU and HU. Only about 3% of all patients with RAU have BS, and progression of RAU to BS is rare. Eye involvement occurs in 80% of the cases with uveitis - and eventually hypopyon, conjunctivitis and/or keratitis. Severe eye lesions eventually causing blindness. Genital aphthous lesions are present in 65% of the cases with lesions on the penis, scrotum and/or vulva (labiae majora et minora).

The exact cause is unknown. It is believed that an autoimmune reaction may cause blood vessels to become inflamed, but it is not clear what triggers this reaction.
Other symptoms may include arthritis, blood clots, and inflammation in the central nervous system and digestive organs.

Cyclosporin / Neoral in Rheumatoid Arthritis : by drdoc
on-line. cyclosporin is a lipophilic cyclic polypeptide isolated from a fungus: tolypocladium inflatum, cylindrocarpon lucidium.
    It was discovered in 1972.
Though the years it has been used in several conditions. These include
    Psoriasis,
    Behcets's disease,
    Inflammatory bowel disease, and
    Rheumatoid arthritis.
It has also made a major impact in transplantation surgery. It is poorly absorbed into the body and enters this cell where it binds to intra cellular protein cyclophilin. It forms a complex calcineurin in the cell. It inhibits the phosphatase activity of calcineurin, and prevents the transcription of mRNA for IL-2 and other cytokines.
As a result there is a blockade of T-cell activation and stimulation. cyclosporin is metabolized in the liver and 90 percent is eliminated in the bile.
Six percent is eliminated in the kidney. A microemulsified form is available as neoral. This results in a better absorption of the drug.

    94. Shac: Symptoms For Both Sexes: Sores, Ulcers And Blisters
How can I avoid getting these sores etc? We don't know why some people get Behcetsdisease, but there are good treatments that can control the symptoms.
    http://www.addenbrookes.org.uk/shac/symptoms/sore.html
    Symptoms for both sexes
    Sores, ulcers and blisters
"Genital ulcers are considered 'urgent cases,' and you should be seen the same day." What will I notice?
You can get ulcers, sores and blisters almost anywhere on your skin, including on the genitals (see below).
    • A sore is an area of infected or inflamed skin that hurts. It is usually red and might weep or bleed. An example of a sore is when you have been bitten or stung by an insect, or when a cut has become infected. An ulcer is a type of sore of the skin where the top surface is missing, but the sore usually isn't bleeding. Often ulcers will look like little saucers and can have a red line around them. The edge can be flat or raised. They might be white, yellow or pinkish. They will usually be very painful but might not be painful at all. They can be any size, from a tiny pinhead to quite large. They can occur singly or in 'crops' that cover quite large areas. An example of an ulcer is the mouth ulcers you can get if you bite your cheek or have an orthodontic appliance (brace) in the mouth. Ulcers often form when there has been an infection that can only partly be controlled by the body, or where the immune system is attacking the skin in some way. You might get other symptoms with a genital ulcer, including feeling feverish or experiencing pain when you pee.
