After seven decades as a constituent republic of the USSR, Belarus attained its independence in 1991. It has retained closer political and economic ties to Russia than any of the other former Soviet republics. Belarus and Russia signed a treaty on a two-state union on 8 December 1999 envisioning greater political and economic integration but, to date, neither side has actively sought to implement the accord.

Mogilev region is located in the east of the Republic of Belarus. The greatest extent from the north to the south is 150 km, from east to west - 300 km. The highest point of the region (239 m above sea level) is located near the railway station Temny Les (Dark Forest), the lowest point (126 m above sea level) - near the village of Gaishin by the river Sozh in Slavgorod district. The territory makes it, including city of Mogilev, 29 thousand sq. km (about 13.8% from the area of Belarus). The landscapes of the region are various: picturesque hills of Mstislavl district give place to the low Central Berezina plain. Green forests in the south change into meadows and fields in the east of the region. There are numerous construction materials fields (chalk, clay, sand, gravel) and several mineral water springs on the territory of the region. There is phosphorite along the river Sozh from Mstislavl to Krichev.
