However, the Belgae were forced to yield to Roman legions during the 1st century BC . For some 300 years thereafter, what is now Belgium flourished as a province of Rome . But Rome's power gradually lessened. In about A.D. the Germanic tribe of the Franks penetrated into northern Belgium. About 100 years later, they took possession of the rest of Belgium and started their conquest of Gaul. The northern part of present-day Belgium became an overwhelmingly Germanized and Germanic- (Frankish)-speaking area, whereas in the southern part people continued to be Roman and spoke derivatives of

    The History of East Belgium
(Text by Leonhard Schifflers) After Centuries of being bounced around, almost the entire population of the 9 German-speaking communes in the east of the country finally feels at home in Belgium, not as Flemings, not as Walloons, but as German-speaking Belgians.
This is the result of the structural changes brought about during a period of three decades, starting in the sixties, by means of which it was hoped that the "Belgian problem" could once and for all be resolved.
This "Belgian problem" is an old one, residing in the coexistence of two Communities, the French-speaking and the Dutch-speaking, within the same national territory. It was hoped at first that the "language quarrels" could be resolved by means of language legislation. A series of language laws came into existence in the sixties which laid the basis for modern Belgium:
the abolishing of the linguistic headcount (1961), the establishing of linguistic frontiers (1962), the regulation of language use in administrative matters (1963) and the regulation of language use in education (1963).

    Belgium's Antarctic History
More than hundred years ago Adrien de Gerlache sailed with the Belgica to Antarctica. Since then, the Antarctic has attracted Belgians irresistibly. The small country was very active on the last continent until the sixties, however in the last decades Belgium seemed to have lost its interest in Antarctica.
Recent adventures of Dixie Dansercoer and Alain Hubert have tried to show that Belgium hasn't forgotten the South Pole yet, nor have the countries scientists, who visit the ice desert regularly. This chapter gives you a short overview of the Belgian presence and involvement in Antarctica. 70South Tools Send to a friend

    History
In 1967, the Livingston Hire Company evolved from a firm originally founded by J. Livingston Hogg to represent large American producers of gauges. The company became the first and only appliance rental company in the European market. Later in the 60s, the young company achieved its first sizeable contract with Cable and Wireless, convincing the banks to back the plans of this growing enterprise. The firm's proximity to two railway stations, King's Cross and St. Pancras, helped convert Livingston staffers into movie stars for a day. British Rail was filming a commercial at these stations for its Red Star Service. Since Livingston Hire used the service for long distance rail travel, some employees were featured in the commercial. In those early years, warehouse management systems were fairly primitive, using chalkboards to track stock and inventory. Soon, though, these methods were replaced by more modern overhead projectors which displayed information on video screens. This way, an employee could update information on a transparency, which could be viewed by other employees from their work station.

    History of TACK
TACK Training was founded in the United Kingdom, more than 50 years ago.
The TACK brothers, George and Alfred, owners of the company now known as Nu-Aire, trained their own employees so successfully that their business associates asked their secret. This made the entrepreneurial TACK brothers realise that there was a market for training, and so TACK Training was born.
When TACK Training became international, it was granted to local business people in various countries throughout the world by way of concessions. The present managing director of TACK in Belgium, Josse Berckmans, is a Belgian national and has more than 15 years of experience in the Belgian Training Industry.
The structure of the TACK organisation offers several benefits:
    • The very latest approaches and training methods from many countries are available to clients, to ensure that delegates are excited by their training courses and therefore highly motivated to use the skills learned.

    History
Professor Verbaeten, working in the Computer Science Department of the Catholic University of Louvain, started with domainname registration in Belgium in 1989.
Before 1994 only 129 domainnames were registered. Since 1994 we experienced a rapid growth of domainnames. By the end of the former registration procedure (December 7th 2000) there were 40000 registered names. Due to the new registration system, started at 11th December 2000, we reached 89718 domainnames by the end of 2000.
At the request of Pierre Verbaeten all responsibilities for the registration of be domainnames were transferred to DNS Belgium, a non-profit organization that was created for this purpose on January 1st, 2000.

    History of domainnames
Internationally The Internet was created by the end of the sixties. An American organization(SRI-NIC) was charged with the administration of the so called domainnames. These are divided into seven categories: .com, .edu, .gov, .org, .net, .int en .mil. These domainnames are called generic top level domains (of gtld's) . In parallel a country division was created: .nl, .uk, .de, .be etc..., the country code top level domains (ccTLD's). This division was based on ISO-norm number 3166.-1
Soon the international registration system of domainnames will be transferred to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). This is a non-profit organization, located in the state of California.
RFC 1591: the fundament of the domainname
The rules of how to compose a domainname are defined in RFC 1591. Requests for Comment (RFC's) can be best described as the basis of Internet. An extensive list of agreements keeps the Internet going. The RFC's are in fact the laws of Internet. These come about in working parties in a democratic manner. On the site of IETF you can find an overview of these workgroups. Everybody can discuss anything, but very often, the subjects are so technical that only specialists can interfere. The RFC's can be divided into four categories:
  • experimental RFC's, a kind of bill of law;

History Early History 12th to the 15th Centuries In the 20th Century Early History Julius Caesar first marched his Roman legions against the ancient Belgae tribes in 58 B.C. For nearly 5 centuries thereafter, Belgium was a tranquil backwater of the empire, shielded from the barbarians by the great Roman defense line on the Rhine, but subject to periodic incursions. From the beginning of the 5th century, Roman rule gave way to the Franks, who held sway for nearly 200 years. In the year 800 the great Charlemagne was named Emperor of the West; he instituted an era of agricultural reform, setting up underling local rulers known as counts. In 814, after Charlemagne's death, these counts rose up to seize more power. By 843 Charlemagne's son had acceded to the Treaty of Verdun, which split French-allied (but Dutch-speaking) Flanders in the north from the southern (French-speaking) Walloon provinces. Source:
