Belize has recognized its pristine forests, rivers, and oceans as valuable assets, and has placed 35% of its land under protection. With a wealth of biodiversity within a small area, Volunteers inevitably find the natural beauty of Belize a positive aspect of their service. The longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, along with numerous small islands, stretch along the coast, providing a home for species of fish, coral and other marine life. Within Belize are a plethora of environments-including mangroves, tropical forest, pine forest, rivers, and caves. From the mountains to the coast, in Belize one will find a fascinating array of native animals, and the country is a prime destination for birdwatchers.
    Economy and Government
Belize is a stable, democratic country. There are two major political parties, which have traded power back and forth over the years. The Prime Minister and members of the Cabinet are elected officials who are surprisingly accessible to the people. In fact, it is not uncommon to meet government leaders in their local towns going about activities.
Belize has a relatively high average yearly income, however, that is coupled with a very high cost of living. Because there is little domestic manufacturing, most of the products sold in Belize are imported. Belize's main exports are agricultural-citrus, sugar, and bananas-making them highly susceptible to market fluctuations.

Belize City, Wednesday, March 12, 2003 On the first day of official government business, following last Friday’s swearing in of the new PUP government, the Ministry of Culture has announced the creation of an Interim Board of Director for the activation of the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH). NICH will bring together the various wings of public sector cultural management and promotion, namely, the Arts Council, the Department of Archaeology and the Museums and Houses of Culture. Yasser Musa, the Director of the Image Factory Art Foundation has been appointed as President of the Interim Committee. Each of the Directors of the various departments will also serve on the Board: George Thompson from Archaeology, John Morris from Museums, Lita Krohn from Houses of Culture and the new Director of the Arts Council, Mr. Andy Palacio. The Secretariat of the NICH will be based at the Museum of Belize in Belize City. The 1998-2003 term of the PUP saw many major developments in culture – the opening of the Museum of Belize, Houses of Culture in Belize City, Benque Viejo del Carmen and Orange Walk Town, a more vibrant music and visual arts industry, the internationalization of Belizean art with the Zero Exhibition and opening of Belize Center for Art Education, to mention just a few of the recent developments. In this new term, the PUP government will complete the new Bliss Performing Arts Auditorium and the renovated House of Culture in Belize City. These flagship centers, along with the new Museum of Belize in Belmopan, the Garifuna Museum in Dangriga and the Houses of Culture in Corozal and Punta Gorda will inject new energy into the cultural renaissance that has started.

Belize City, November 20th 2002 Hon. Cordel Hyde, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports joined St. Martin De Porres School, corner of Partridge and Ebony Streets to celebrate the school’s first cultural day celebration on Monday 18th November. Mrs. Veronica Jones, Standard I teacher, informed that it was a whole day event. The celebration began 9am when students gathered at the St. Martin De Porres Church and had a religious ceremony. Father John Stochl led the procession. Students read petitions and prayers in Spanish, Creole and English languages. Hymns were sung in different languages also. After the church service, the students paraded through the streets in Lake Independence and headed towards their classes. At school they had lunch and played cultural games. In the evening they had educational activities, contests and short dances. “This, our first cultural day was one of awareness where we had items which belonged to different cultures displayed for the students. We displayed dresses, cooking utensils, and had cultural dishes for the students to sample. Every student got the opportunity to taste what other ethnic groups’ cultural food is. It was a small scale cultural fest,” Mrs. Jones said.

Belize was an important part in the great Mayan Empire. The Maya Empire was possibly the most sophisticated civilization in the ancient Americas. Including modern day southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras, the Mayas reached their peak in the 6th, 7th, and 8th centuries AD. However, by the 14TH Century this once great civilization mysteriously declined. By the time the Spanish arrived in the 16TH Century, Maya presence was barely felt.

It is a deep-rooted passion that is felt in every corner of this small Central American country. While deeply immersed in the traditions of the Maya, Belize is now the only English-speaking country in the Maya world. The spirit of the Mundo Maya is in the faces of Garifuna (Carib-Indian) and Creole children, as they help prepare a daily meal in their villages. It is in the women dressed in traditional, colorful garb as they celebrate the Deer Dance, a nine-day Maya cultural celebration, or washing the family's clothes, waist-deep in creeks. It can also be found in the many professional guides who will gladly explain the mystical Maya culture at any one of the hundreds of Maya sites within Belize.

What holidays do you celebrate and why are they important? What kinds of music do you listen to? Design a postcard with one side being a picture you create by hand, collage, or computer that reflects something important from your native culture and the other written as if you're sending it to a person in Belize. Pretend you are living with a family in your chosen country. You should learn as much as you can about Belize from the links below. Create a postcard to send to someone at home: friend, family, teacher. Design a postcard with one side being a picture you create by hand, collage, or computer that reflects something you have learned from the culture to which you are traveling, and the other written to someone at home (friend, relative, teacher).
    Two: Create Your Own Culture
After learning about Belize's culture, think about how it compares to your own. Form a group with one person who studied each other country in this quest (Morocco, India, Egypt). Discuss among the four of you the following: What is good about each culture? What is interesting about each culture? From these observations, create a culture for yourself. Some questions you might consider are the following: Where would you live? Near mountains? Oceans? North or south? How would you dress? What would be the family structure be like? What would your flag look like? What kinds of foods would you eat? What sorts of resources would you need to survive in this weather? What would you celebrate? Use any information gathered in this webquest to create a united culture from your own culture and the four cultures studied here.

Country Flag ... Travel Warning HISTORY OF BELIZE The Mayan civilization spread into the area of Belize between 1500 BC and AD 300 and flourished until about AD 1200. Several major archeological sites, notably Caracol, Lamanai, Lubaantun, Altun Ha, and Xunantunich, reflect the advanced civilization and much denser population of that period. European contact began in 1502 when Christopher Columbus sailed along the coast. The first recorded European settlement was begun by shipwrecked English seamen in 1638. Over the next 150 years, more English settlements were established. This period also was marked by piracy, indiscriminate logging, and sporadic attacks by Indians and neighboring Spanish settlements. Great Britain first sent an official representative to the area in the late 18th century but Belize was not formally termed the "Colony of British Honduras" until 1840. It became a crown colony in 1862. Subsequently, several constitutional changes were enacted to expand representative government. Full internal self-government under a ministerial system was granted in January 1964. The official name of the territory was changed from British Honduras to Belize in June 1973, and full independence was granted on September 21, 1981.

Oct 13, 1999 Cleaning and Culture
Well, the weekend did not go quite as I had planned. I got felled by one of those lovely stranger-in-a-strange land bugs and wasn't too lively for most of it. But I did get moved. On Saturday Francine, the woman who cleans here at Naturalight and works part time at Pelican, came to help me clean up the new place. It was pretty dirty. Mostly dust and sawdust and dead bugs which a vacuum likely would have made short work of. But we didn't have a vacuum. What we had was a broom, bucket, mop, scrub brush and one rag. (Here's some advice. If you're going to live in a foreign country, take more than one rag.) We also had Joy and bleach. So we scrubbed everything up as high as we could reach and called it good. The advantage of that cement floor is you just slosh to your heart's content and then mop down the floor when you're done. I discovered that plastic-coated metal louvers are waaaay harder to wash than windows and learned how to wash screens in a shower that sort of droobles a wad of water. Washing the body is interesting too. Anyway we worked for about 4 hours with some help from Francine's daughter (about 14 yrs old I guess) and lots of help from her 3-year-old son. In case there was any doubt, three year olds the world over like nothing better than playing in a bucket of soapy water, even if it is full of dead bugs. I was a bit concerned about how much to pay them and finally settled on offering BZ $50 (US $25) and watching for the reaction. It must have been okay, because Francine crossed herself. Lady Bountiful, that's me.

Belize, unique and unusual, is an exciting destination for the traveler seeking to experience different cultures and exotic environments. An English-speaking, democratic nation, Belize is blessed with an amazing variety of bio-geographic regions, including the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, hundreds of tiny cays (as the Belizeans call their islands, pronounced 'keys'), miles of unexplored beaches, and world class diving, snorkeling, and fishing. Stretching 165 miles from the Yucatan Peninsula to the Bay of Honduras, the Belize barrier reef is renowned as one of the most pristine in the world. A fantastic diversity of habitat is here, including hundreds of islands, extensive shallow water flats, mangrove ranges, and innumerable coral reefs. But Belize is much more than a water sports destination - this is a country that is bestowed with the largest remaining tracts of undisturbed rainforests in all of Central America. Its bird life is world famous, and birders can often record dozens of new species each day. Wildlife abounds - the rainforests are home to jaguar and mountain cow, tayra, agouti, and howler monkey. Geography Approximately 9000 Square miles bordered by Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the west and south and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Belize has the second longest barrier reef in the world (175 miles long). The land is flat at the coast and rises to 3000 ft inland. Jungle and rainforest cover the northern central and southern regions with dry pine savannah in the west.

Each ethnic group, or those who associate themselves into a group, still own on a measure of cultural heritage from their predecessors. Because of a relatively smooth intermarriage between individuals of similar or different groups, one cannot certainly place an individual within an ethnic group by looks. A person's inner feelings determine what group he/she chooses to class him/herself. A high degree of respect must be given to each ethnic group. There are certain ideas, ideals, beliefs, traditions, folklores and others ways of living pertinent and unique to each ethnic group. These were inherited from the past and kept alive. These elements make our culture dynamic and kicking, and are embedded in their lifestyle. Each generation has the responsibility of handing down these cultural elements for posterity. Belizee.com
