History
B.C. The Mayas first settled in the area some 200 to 300 years later, and a few ancient Maya cities still survive. The region was probably traversed by on his way to Honduras, but the Spanish made no attempt at colonization. British buccaneers, who used the cays to prey on Spanish shipping, founded Belize (early 17th cent.). British settlers from Jamaica began the exploitation of timber. Spain contested British possession several times until defeated at the last battle of St. George's Cay (1798). From 1862 to 1884 the colony was administered by the governor of Jamaica. Guatemala long claimed the territory as part of its inheritance from Spain. As Belize progressed toward independence, the tension between Britain and Guatemala over the issue increased. In 1964 the colony gained complete internal self-government, and in 1981 Belize achieved independence, a development that prompted Guatemala to threaten war. Relations improved, however, and in Sept., 1991, Guatemala officially recognized Belize's independence and sovereignty. Nonetheless, a British force aimed at guaranteeing independence remained in the country until Sept., 1994. In 1993 Manuel Esquivel of the United Democratic party became prime minister; he was replaced in 1998 by Said Musa of the People's United party.

    HISTORY
The Mayan civilization spread into the area of Belize between 1500 BC and AD 300 and flourished until about AD 1200. Several major archeological sites notably Caracol, Lamanai, Lubaantun, Altun Ha, and Xunantunich reflect the advanced civilization and much denser population of that period. European contact began in 1502 when Columbus sailed along the coast. The first recorded European settlement was begun by shipwrecked English seamen in 1638. Over the next 150 years, more English settlements were established. This period was also marked by piracy, indiscriminate logging, and sporadic attacks by Indians and neighboring Spanish settlements. Great Britain first sent an official representative to the area in the late 18th century, but Belize was not formally termed the Colony of British Honduras until 1840. It became a crown colony in 1862. Subsequently, several constitutional changes were enacted to expand representative government. Full internal self-government under a ministerial system was granted in January 1964. The official name of the territory was changed from British Honduras to Belize in June 1973, and full independence was granted on September 21, 1981.

SCOUTING IN BELIZE BELIZE SCOUT ASSOCIATION BELIZE is a country located in Central America. It is located Southeast of Mexico and north of Guatemala on the Caribbean Sea. Belize was formerly called British Honduras. The oldest records found to date in England indicates that Scouting in Belize started in 1911 with a census of two troops, twenty Scouts. The following year numbers were one troop, three Scouters and twenty-four Scouts, a total of twenty-seven, The Belize Branch of The Scout Association was officially registered in 1917 with a census of eight Scouters, one hundred thirteen Scouts and fifty-nine Cubs, a total membership of one hundred and eighty. However, according to a research undertaken by Hr. Leopold Flowers, former Executive Commissioner of the Belize Scout Association and Mr. William Faux, presently Deputy Chief Commissioner, Scouting in Belize was started in 1910 when one Mr, Henry Lonqsworth of St. John's Cathedral established a troop there. In 1987, Belize joined the World Organization (WOSM). In 1915, Robin 0. Phillips, an American Scout of about 17 years of age is said to have invested 20 young men as Scouts. This took place at Robin's home, then situated at the corner of Wilson Street and Barrack Road. When these Scouts were considered well trained, Robin's father approached Governor William Hart Bennett to seek assistance and support for the Scout Movement. Governor Bennett then selected Mr. George Grabbam, then manager of the Belize Estate and Produce Company Ltd. Mr. Grabham in turn appointed as Scout Masters to assist his Mr. Phillip Ely, one Mr. Wexham and Mr. Paul Shephard Berry, then the superintendent of the Belize Wireless Station. The movement flourished for about three to four years, then died when Mr. Grabham left Belize.

Belize History During most of the colonial period, Spain claimed sovereignty over Belize. However, from the mid-17th century, British freebooters settled in the area, using it as a base for privateer operations in the West Indies. It was not recognized as a British colony until 1862. Meanwhile, Guatemala had assumed Spain's traditional claim to sovereignty over Belize. Although in 1859 it had agreed with Britain to cede sovereignty in return for the construction of a road from Guatemala City to Belize, that road was never constructed, and in 1940, Guatemala resumed its claims. As self-government was established and independence approached, there were lengthy negotiations between Guatemala and Britain involving possible cession of part of Belize to Guatemala. At one point the United States offered its "good offices" to try to bring about a settlement. In the meantime the British stationed a battalion of troops and a detachment of fighter aircraft to guarantee Belizean sovereignty. In the early 1990s a 1500-man British garrison remained in the country, costing Belize 15% of its GDP. No formal agreement among Guatemala, Britain, and Belize was ever signed. However, the 1985 Guatemalan constitution gave up that country's unconditional claim to Belize. The government of Marcos Vinici Cerezo Arevalo, the first civilian government in Guatemala in many years, finally officially recognized the independence of Belize in 1991, in return for a limitation of Belize's Caribbean offshore boundaries and a grant to Guatemala of access to the sea through its territory.

From the caves to civilization . . .

12,000 years ago Ice Age man hunted the woolly mammoth and other such animals he could get his hands on, that roamed with him upon the moist, cool terrain of Central America. The area that is now Belize was probably inhabited as long ago as 9000 BC. Groups of hunters an gatherers lived in the hill ("puuc") country of northern Yucatan and along the Caribbean shore of modern-day Belize. From about 6000 B.C. on, corn, squash, beans and other such staple crops were independently domesticated in widely separated areas of Mesoamerica. Clay figurines dating back to 2000 BC, and believed to be fertility symbols of the pre-Classic period, mark the rising importance of religion in Mesoamerica. Around 1000 B.C., the earliest known culture, that of the Olmec Indians, began to spread throughout Mesoamerica. Their large-scale ceremonial centers; their cult of the man-jaguar; glyph writing, the vigesimal numerical system, the ritual calendar (the first in the New World), and the building of pyramids have marked them as the "mother culture" because elements of these developments are found to be common throughout all the Mesoamerican civilizations. from the time of the Maya . . .
