AND OTHER TRAGIC LOSS
This web site is in memory of my son, Andrew. In 1992, at the age of 22 years old, he took his own life. His suicide changed my life forever. As a result of my tragic loss, I made a decision to further my education in social work and psychotherapy, and reach out to others. Although the road has been a difficult one, I have persevered. I have learned over these last ten years that hope is an essential part of healing. You will find some valuable tools to inspire hope after loss to suicide and related tragic loss, on the Resource Links page. If you are searching for a survivor of suicide state-by-state group listing, check out www.AFSP.org . Take a moment to look at and write your comments in the Hopeseek Guest Book . Also, please take a look at the Hopeseek Book List for helpful grief and survivor literature. In the future, I am planning to publish a page on Child/Adolescent Grief, including literature specifically for these age groups. Hopeseek is not a suicide crisis hotline. If you are in a crisis situation and are in need of immediate help, please call the National Suicide Crisis Hotline: 1-800-784-2433 or 1-800-SUICIDE. Are you feeling sad and lost? Did you lose someone, something? Good Grief Rituals is about tools and rituals for dealing with change and loss. It is about grieving. Who needs to grieve? The answer is most of us. We are widows, widowers, disaster victims, survivors of dysfunctional families and veterans of wars. We are survivors of accidents, rapes, assaults and diseases. We are the friends and family of those mentioned above. We have all experienced loss, disappointments, setbacks and heartbreaks. We all need to grieve. At that moment, when beset by the suffocating gloom of life's raven-shrouded desolation, we require no encyclopedic explanation, no scientific analysis, no clinician's assessment, no psychiatric or psychological treatise, but the heart of love and the soul of compassion to tenderly assist us through that blackest night. It is neither a journey to be taken lightly nor willingly, yet an unavoidable path that we each must travel; a path that we are destined to follow: either alone, or with God. We well may assist one another along the way; indeed, we should, for how much lighter the burden if shared with another of compassionate soul and caring heart. Alas, how few wish to make the commitment required, for in order to alleviate another's pain, we must first be willing to partake of it. We must open our fragile heart, and allow it to break. Otherwise, we do little more than mouth meaningless platitudes of which there is no end, and from which arise no tangible benefits. Shall I share with you the pain that accompanies the loss of one deeply loved? You would be better served to ask a new mother to characterize the indescribable pain of childbirth, or, perhaps, the man suffering with kidney stones to detail the horrific sensations which accompany the slightest movement of the minuscule object which rends and tears as it winds its way to freedom. Regardless of the eloquence of either individual, you will find yourself none the wiser. In order to truly understand the pain associated with each condition, you must experience it on a personal level. And once the unimaginable achieves reality, you will no longer pursue such a line of inquiry. The answers, descriptions, and definitions will become exceedingly clear, yet the intellectual clarity achieved will prove of little satisfaction, and of no intrinsic value in assisting you through that longest night.
