Bermuda is about 1065 km east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The Gulf Stream which flows between Bermuda and the North American continent keeps the climate temperate. There are about 181 small islands, the seven largest of them are connected by bridges and causeways. Total land area is 20.59 square miles.

Bermuda Triangle
Dateline: 10/12/98 For over thirty years, the Bermuda Triangle has been popularly known for supposedly paranormal disappearances of boats and aircraft. This imaginary triangle, also known as "Devil's Triangle," has its three points at Miami Puerto Rico , and Bermuda . Actually, despite several factors which should contribute to higher rates of accidents in the region, the Bermuda Triangle has been found to be no more statistically dangerous than other areas of the open ocean. The popular legend of the Bermuda Triangle began with a 1964 article in the magazine Argosy that described and named the Triangle. Further articles and reports in such magazines as National Geographic and Playboy merely repeated the legend without additional research. Many of the disappearances discussed in these articles and others did not even occur in the area of the Triangle.

Bermuda
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Bermuda was first settled in 1609 by shipwrecked English colonists headed for Virginia. Tourism to the island to escape North American winters first developed in Victorian times. Bermuda has developed into highly successful offshore financial center. A referendum on independence was soundly defeated in 1995. Email: info@bic.bm Our fish hook shaped island, or rather collection of islands, is often confused with our Caribbean neighbors who are actually over a 1000 miles to the South. Bermuda is actually the southern edge of the top of a submerged mountain that was once an active volcano millions of years ago. Located approximately 600 miles of the coast of cape Hatteras, visitors are surprised to discover that a single short plane flight from most of the East Coast gateway cities is all that is required to arrive in sunny Bermuda. There are also direct flights from Canada and Europe. The ring of coral reefs surrounding the principal islands has the distinction of being the northernmost living coral reef formations in the northern hemisphere. It was this deadly ring of reefs that gave Bermuda a reputation as a graveyard of ships, and there was great truth to this... over 300 known shipwrecks are scattered over the coral reefs that surround us. Divers from all over the world enjoy exploring these wrecks that are often situated in less than 30 feet of water. The colorful corals and abundant marine life are an added incentive to divers, snorkellers and glass bottom boat cruisers.

Boat groundings have destroyed thousands of square meters of coral reef in Bermuda. There are only two navigable approaches to the islands and several oil tankers have gone aground on the reef. An investment in improved navigational markers would be helpful in preventing such accidents.

I'm not afraid, send me back to The Bermuda Triangle GEOGRAPHY LESSON The Dimensions of the Bermuda Triangle. The Bermuda Triangle covers approximately 500,000 square miles of the Atlantic Ocean. The official dimensions (if you can call them that) claim the triangle is that area between Bermuda; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Miami, Florida. However when you start plotting ocean disasters that are attributed to the Triangle its boundaries shift all over the North Atlantic and sometimes into the Eastern Pacific and Gulf of Mexico.
