Barnes and Redman surprise at Biathlon Olympic Trials About biathlon About USBA Biathlon community Calendar ... Support/join USBA Lawton Redman of Florence, VT and Lanny Barnes, of Durango, CO were the surprise winners in the Individual competitions at the US Biathlon Olympic Trials today in Heber City, Utah. Redman, who is in his second year as a member of the US Biathlon Team, toppled 17 of the 20 targets in the Men's 20k. He combined this with the fifth fastest ski time over the tough Soldier Hollow Olympic Biathlon course. Redman's time of 55:17, which includes one minute for each missed target, put him 9.9 seconds ahead of second place finisher, Dan Campbell of Hastings, MN. Finishing third was Dan Westover of Jericho, VT, 21 seconds behind Redman. All of the top three finishers had only three penalties on a day that saw some of the top competitors miss more than 5 targets. 1998 Olympian Jay Hakkinen, of Kasilof, AK and Jeremy Teela, of Anchorage, AK had five and seven penalties, respectively. This was offset by the third and first fastest ski times in the competition. After the race, Redman commented, "This is just the beginning of the trials. Tomorrow is a new day. But I did better than I expected and am very pleased to have won." Even more surprising than Redman was the win by Lanny Barnes of the US Junior National Team. Barnes' top previous finish in a major championship was in the 2001 European Championships, where she placed 7th in the 10k Pursuit and 10th in the 7.5K sprint. She and her twin sister, Tracy, who placed 9th today, have been training with Junior National Coach Cory Salmela for the past two years. The Barnes sisters are part of the up and coming US Junior program.

He should place in all four short-track events and could even sweep gold, becoming this year's Eric Heiden or Bonnie Blair. The one drawback? He still will hear questions about accusations that he gave less than a full effort in a recent qualifying race so his friend, Shani Davis, could leapfrog another skater and make the Olympic team. American men do not look as good in the long track. Casey Fitzrandolph finished sixth in the 500 and seventh in the 1,000 at the Nagano Games. Derek Parra is a contender at 1,500.

History
The biathlon, which combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, originated in Norway as a training exercise for soldiers. The first known competition took place in 1767 between companies of guards who patrolled the border with Sweden. Late in the 19th century, local rifle and ski clubs in Norway and other Scandinavian countries practiced the sport to keep their members prepared for combat. An early form of the biathlon, called " military ski patrol," was a demonstration sport at the first Winter Olympics in 1924, and it was a medal sport in 1928, 1936, and 1948. Because few countries participated, and the few that did participate had trouble agreeing on the rules, the sport was dropped from the Olympics. However, the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon was founded in 1948 to standardize rules for both the biathlon and the modern pentathlon. The first world championship was held in 1957 and biathlon was added to the Winter Olympic program in 1960, but the U. S. didn't conduct a national championship until 1965. Following the lead of the international organization, the national governing body was originally the U. S. Modern Pentathlon and Biathlon Association. The U. S. Biathlon Association was spun off in 1980.

Community Olympic Development Program - Biathlon
2002-2003 Biathlon Schedule

Biathlon is the exciting sport that combines the physical demands of fast-paced cross-country skiing with the precision and control of rifle marksmanship. Overall, biathlon is becoming one of the fastest growing spectator sports in Europe. In the event, the biathlete is required to race several kilometers on challenging terrain with a .22 caliber rifle harnessed to their back, and then shoot either standing or prone (lying on the stomach) at targets 50 meters away. Skiing and shooting are alternated, requiring the athlete to push their body to their limits during skiing, and then quickly calm their body and heartbeat enough to be able to hit the targets.
The Minnesota Biathlon Community Olympic Development Program combines local weekly training with intensive instruction during camps at a variety of training locations in Minnesota and Olympic Training Centers throughout the nation. Along with local training, biathletes participate in camps. Nearly 70 CODP biathletes train throughout the state. The Minnesota Biathlon Community Olympic Development Program is the largest and most successful junior biathlon program in the nation.

the daunting task of combining two very different sports crosscountry biathlon wasincluded as a military exercise in the first olympic Winter Games
http://www.texaco.com/support/olympics/docs/saltlake/sports/biathlon/home.html
Venue: Soldier Hollow at the eastern edge of Wasatch Mountain State Park
During a biathlon race, athletes have the daunting task of combining two very different sports: cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. The word "biathlon" stems from the Greek word for two contests. What began as a means of survival - skiing to hunt for food and skiing with weapons to defend territory - ultimately became a military competitive sport.
Biathlon was included as a military exercise in the first Olympic Winter Games in 1924 and continued as a demonstration sport in 1928, 1936 and 1948, but was removed from the Games after World War II because of post-war sensitivities. Officially, biathlon was added to the program at the 1960 Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley, California with a men's 20-km individual event. In 1968, the four-man relay event was added to the program and the sprint competition was included 12 years later in the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. In 1992, women made their Olympic biathlon debut with individual, sprint and relay events in the Olympic Winter Games in Albertville. The men's and women's pursuit events will be contested for the first time in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Nordic nations and Russians have traditionally dominated the sport.
Eight biathlon events in the Olympic program combine skiing and marksmanship (shooting at a coin-sized target from a distance of 50 meters). There are four different races and two distinct ways of starting the competitions: one at a time at 30-second intervals and a mass start. Countries are awarded up to six competitors of each gender and a maximum of four athletes per event. A maximum of 220 athletes, 112 men and 108 women, will compete in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Venue: Nozawa Onsen , a town of 5,000 famous for its hot springs and which claims to be the birthplace of Japanese skiing, will play host to the biathlon events at the Nagano Games. Two 4km trails (A and B) will be laid out near the grandstand, which will be near the shooting range. The trails will meander through a relatively small area measuring about 1 square kilometer. Trail A will have a difference in elevation of 78 meters, and trail B a difference of 62 meters. Both trails will be 7 meters wide. 1994 Golds: Sergei Tchepikov and Sergei Tarassov of Russia won the 10km race and the 20km race respectively, and the German team won the relay. Myriam Bedard of Canada won both women's individual events, becoming the first athlete from North America to win an Olympic biathlon event. The Russia women won the relay. How It Works: The biathlon combines cross-country skiing with .22-caliber rifle shooting from both the standing and prone positions.

There are four different events that take place on the ice: Men's figure skating Women's figure skating, pair's figure skating and ice dancing. The contestents are judged on their performance in the short program which is a combination of required skills and a free skate, which is a program entirely composed by the skater.
Alpine Skiing
There are five events in the alpine skiing category: The downhill ski, during which the skier has one run to complete the course in the shortest amount of time. The Super-G (super giant slalom), which is a combination of the giant slalom and the downhill. Each skier has one try to make it down an extended slalom course in the shortest amount of time. The Giant slalom, each skier gets two tries at the longer version of the slalom course. The slalom is the shortest course, requiring the fastest turns. The Combined rounds out the five alpine ski events, it is a combination of one downhill run followed by two slalom runs.

Racing headfirst on a sleigh at 90 miles per hour and skiing with a gun. These aren't things your crazy uncle does - they're Olympic sports. Here's a look at some of the weird winter sports you'll see at the 2002 Olympics. Skeleton
Skeleton is being held at the Winter Olympics for the first time since 1948. This was the world's first sliding sport. Riders slide on a small metal sled with two runners. The sport was given its name in 1892 when the new metal sled was introduced and everyone thought it looked like a skeleton. Riders do risk being nothing but a pile of bones by the end of a run since they ride head first at speeds nearing 90 miles per hour. In 2002, women will compete in this sport for the first time. Biathlon
Biathlon combines two sports: cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Competitors are given points for how fast they ski and how accurate they can shoot. The sport originally started out as a survival strategy. People in Northern Europe would ski with guns to hunt for food and defend their countries. In the biathlon that takes place at the Winter Olympics, competitors just shoot at targets - not animals or each other. Short Track Speed Skating
Skaters race around a small oval track in fours over distances between 500 and 5,000 meters. The top two skaters

USOEC Biathlon In 1990, the U.S. Biathlon Association established its resident athlete program at the U.S. Olympic Education Center to identify and develop top young athletes. Since then, the program has developed national champions and an Olympian. "The U.S. Biathlon Association believes the Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan University is the most valuable developmental tool in the U.S.," said USBA Program Director Max Cobb. "Biathlon is a sport that doesn't have a collegiate avenue, so the USOEC program provides the only way for a biathlete to go to school and train at the same time." The USOEC is one of America’s four Olympic training centers but it is the only one designed to develop champions in competition and the classroom. Located on the campus of Northern Michigan University in Marquette, USOEC resident athletes are able to continue their education while training for the Olympic Games. To be a USOEC biathlete, an athlete must be approved by the U.S. Biathlon Association, the U.S. Olympic Committee and NMU, and must show satisfactory progress, both academically and competitively, to remain in the program. Directing the USOEC biathlon program is 1992 Olympian, Patrice Jankowski. She is assisted by Sarah Lehto.
