History of the Olympics Flag The flag was first used in the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. The Olympic flag is paraded during the opening ceremony of each Olympic Games. At the end of an Olympics, the mayor of the host-city presents the flag to the mayor of the next host-city. The flag will remain in the town hall of the next host-city until the next Olympic Games, four years later.

Sports National Guard Duty Can Fuel Athletic Ambition, says Olympic Hopeful
By Maj. Stan Zezotarski
California National Guard Public Affairs Office
Olympic hopeful Capt. Rick Oliver has his sights on Capt. Rick Oliver carries the California Flag after helping his team place third at the National Buard Bureau Championships last winter. He says the military is looking for more athletes from the National Guard ranks to develop for possible Olympic competition. more than the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, he wants all California National Guardsmen with desire, talent or interest in athletics to take advantage of the athletic and training opportunities available to them through the military services. "We have tremendous talent in this state," he says. "If we can just get people to participate, recruiters to go after high school and college athletes, I think we could fill the entire National Guard Bureau athletic teams with California Guardsmen." But the program’s focus is not necessarily the "blue chip" athlete who appears to have infinite potential. The program is designed to help find talent and develop it – all you need is desire and the boldness to dream.

Olympic Games Spark Classroom Activities!
Capitalize on your students' Olympic interests with Internet-inspired activities. Included: A dozen activities and four Teaching Masters for use across the grades. Take a close look at the emblem of the XVIII Olympic Winter Games, to be held February 6 to 22 in Nagano, Japan. What do you see? A flower? A snowflake? The emblem's hexagonal shape mirrors the shape of a snowflake, an appropriate symbol for the Winter Games. The shape also resembles the flowering Alpine plant a purposeful symbol underlining the fact that Nagano emphasized environmental considerations in its staging of the Games. But a closer look reveals more! Take a look at the pictograph symbols designed to represent each of the Olympic sports that are part of the Nagano Games. Do you see a few of those symbols (and their shadows) cleverly "disguised" in the emblem? See if your students can pick out the sports represented in the emblem!

21.Feb.02 Jeremy Teela straps a 22-caliber rifle to his back, steps into his bindings, and glides through the starting gate. His quest to ski the 20-kilometer course a split second faster than 87 other Olympic biathletes has begun. The biathlon, a combination of riflery and cross country skiing, is one of the most challenging Olympic sports. "Skiing is more difficult because you carry a seven pound rifle," Jeremy explains. "Shooting is more challenging because you need to calm down before taking aim." Vladimir Obelic, a veteran of six Olympic Games and manager of on venue results for Nordic events, knows how difficult the biathlon is. "Technologically, it is the most demanding Olympic sport," he says. "Biathlon has all the requirements of cross country skiing with its interval start, intermediate timing points, and staggered finish and all the demands of shooting with its automated and manual scoring."

Hanevold wins second medal at biathlon worlds

KHANTY-MANSIYSK, Russia Norway's Halvard Hanevold won the 20-kilometer individual event Wednesday, capturing his second medal at the biathlon world championships and earning the World Cup individual title. Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, the Norwegian who won four gold medals at last year's Olympics, gained the overall World Cup title despite finishing 30th in the next-to-last men's race at these championships in Siberia. Hanevold missed only one target and was finished in 53 minutes 39.4 seconds. He won the silver in the 12.5K pursuit Sunday. Vesa Hietalahti of Finland was second, 1 minute, 24.7 seconds behind Hanevold in the 20K. Ricco Gross of Germany capitalized on perfect skiing to finish third, 1:25.9 behind. Gross won gold in the 12.5K pursuit and was second to Bjoerndalen in Saturday's 10K sprint.

Redman earns Olympic invite
Associated Press
MIDWAY, Utah Nerves woke Lawton Redman before dawn Thursday, but he settled down in time to win his second race of the U.S. biathlon trials and secure a berth on the Olympic team. Redman won the 10-kilometer sprint in 26 minutes, 50.5 seconds, and missed just one of 20 targets on the rolling Soldier Hollow course 40 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, where the Olympic races will be held. "I was a little nervous," Redman said. "I wanted to ski a good race." Jill Krause takes a moment to reflect after her victory at the biathlon trials on Thursday. Krause's win was not enough to earn an Olympic bid. Redman moved from Florence, Vt., to Heber City, Utah, in the fall of 2000 to train for the Winter Games. Jay Hakkinen, of Kasilof, Alaska, also locked up a berth with his second-place finish in 27:12.6, as did Jeremy Teela, of Anchorage, Alaska, who was third in 27:23.1. Dan Campbell, of Hastings, Minn., took the fourth and final spot, and Dan Westover of Jericho, Vt., and David Gieck of Jackson, Wyo., were selected as alternates. On the women's side, Jill Krause, of St. Cloud, Minn., won the final 7.5-kilometer race on the Olympic course, but her effort came too late to land her on the team. Barring official changes, Rachel Steer of Anchorage, Kara Salmela of Duluth, Mich., Andrea Nahrgang, of Wayzalta, Minn., and Kristina Sabasteanski, of Standish, Maine, will comprise the women's team at the games.
