    Introduction
Trademarks Domain names Trademark and domain name disputes examined in other jurisdictions ... Author biographies 1. Introduction South African trademark law recognises and protects the rights that persons acquire in trademarks, trade names or trading styles. These rights are protected by statute and also in terms of the common law. Since the Internet has become such an important marketing tool, it is self-evident that the right of a proprietor to use a domain name, which is identical to or incorporates its trademark, is of the utmost importance for any business that the proprietor intends to conduct on the Internet. A domain name is a business asset. In the last few years, a vast number of disputes have arisen between parties which do not have any legal right to register or use specific domain names and the true trademark proprietors, which claim to be legally entitled to register and use the relevant domain names. To understand the complexity of domain name disputes and other trademark disputes on the Internet, including the use of trademarks as metatags, it is necessary to explain briefly what a trademark is and how it can generally be protected against infringement by third parties.

Forming and Unforming Joint Ventures: Structural Options, IP Allocation and Anticipatory Exit Strategies
This workshop will examine the structural and IP allocation options available in creating various types of joint venture relationships, including technology co-development, spin-outs and spin-offs, strategic alliances and co-marketing arrangements. The focus will be on reducing conflicts among the participants during operation, and protecting the participants in the case of disputes. We will discuss common (although not commonly understood) problems arising from joint ownership, and alternatives to joint ownership. Finally, we will discuss timing and triggers for dissolving the relationship, and IP de-allocation mechanisms for the worst case scenario. Ron Laurie is a founding partner of Skadden Arps' Palo Alto office and co-chairs the firm's Computer and Information Technology practice. He advises clients in the computer, communications, media and financial services industries on intellectual property strategy, a subject which he has taught at Stanford and Boalt law schools, with a primary focus on the strategic use of IP assets in complex business transactions including mergers and acquisitions, technology divestitures, joint ventures and strategic alliances. Gregory McNamee The New York Times , Michiko Kakutani
It is a book that situates Leopold's crimes in a wider context of European and African history while at the same time underscoring the peculiarly modern nature of his efforts to exert "spin control" over his actions. The Boston Globe , Robert Taylor
Adam Hochschild's spellbinding account of imperial machinations and how these led to the first major human-rights movement of this century presents a dynamic story. Largely forgotten now, its very obscurity suggests the success of the monarch's role-playing in his day, and indeed King Leopold's Ghost is the first comprehensive account in English for the general reader. The Economist, Sept. 11, 1999
"To an already long list of tyrants which includes Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and Idi Amin, a late addition is required. 'Late' only because King Leopold II of Belgium (1835-1909) should always have been there. As 'owner' of the Congo Free State from 1885 to 1908 he was responsible for what Joseph Conrad once called 'the vilest scramble for loot that ever disfigured the history of human conscience.' It is indeed a ghastly story of greed, lies and murder. And Adam Hochschild retells it well. 'King Leopold's Ghost' last week beat several excellent books to win the Lionel Gelber prize. . . . now the world's most important award for non-fiction. . . . Around the turn of this century in the depths of the Congo the bonds of humanity were unbound and the trappings of civilisation cast aside, releasing something diabolical which exists within us all. Mr. Hochschild conveys this particularly well."

    Introduction
People have been traveling and writing about what they saw for centuries. From Herodotus to Marco Polo to Richard Burton to Henry Morton Stanley, travelers have been instrumental in providing their homelands with visions of far away, exotic and unknown areas of the globe. They have traveled for as many different reasons as there were travelers. Some reasons were personal, economic, educational and national, but glory seemed to prevade. Beginning in the nineteenth century, travelers enjoyed many advantages. Advancements in technology, medicine, politics, and economics made travel by a larger and more variegated population possible. The late nineteenth century has been dubbed the era of discovery in Africa, and while the continent was inhabitted by a multitude of peoples, England and America celebrated their exploration of the "dark continent." They wrote about their travels, lectured at home and brought Africa closer to their readers through fantastic descriptions and tales.

Adinkra Symbology The origin and meaning of adinkra symbols. Adinkra is a cotton cloth produced in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire which has traditional Akan symbols stamped upon it. The adinkra symbols represent popular proverbs and maxims, record historical events, express particular attitudes or behaviour related to depicted figures, or concepts uniquely related to abstract shapes. It is one of several traditional cloths produced in the region – the other well known cloths being kente and adanudo. History 102 - Western Civilization Since 1648 This survey of Western Civilization's history in the "modern" periodthat is, since the mid-seventeenth centuryreviews its various dimensions over that 350 year span. The course has a clear political and economic emphasis, but it also reflects something of a "great man/woman" approach to history, an admittedly "old-fashioned" perspective. Social, diplomatic, and intellectual themes are not ignored, but do receive slightly less attention. Mechanically, the class involves two hour examinations plus a final; it is also distinguished by a series of daily quizzes designed to help the student "keep up" with things. History 220 - The "Sport of Kings:" An Historical Approach
History 320 - History of Horse Racing
    With a chronological extension back to at least the ancient Greeks and worldwide geographical dimensions, horse racing is one of the world's most popular and important sports. In this survey the student will be exposed to the vocabulary of breeding and racing;
their structure and organization; and the historical development of the industry and sport. Racing buffs and pure horse lovers are welcome, but the course will be an "honest" one, focusing on the internal history of the sport and on its place within society at large.

Of the six Strickland sisters, five became professional writers. The two eldest, Eliza and Agnes , achieved fame at mid-century as historians of British royalty and nobility. Being the youngest sisters, Catharine and Susanna were often left to amuse themselves at Reydon Hall. Though of very different temperaments, they were close friends and often shared their experiments in writing with each other. Miniature portrait of
Susanna Strickland Catharine claimed to have published a book in 1818 and wrote at least twelve for publication prior to her marriage in 1832. Susanna's first children's book appeared in 1822. By the spring of 1832, when she emigrated with her husband and daughter, she had published several children's books and had begun to establish her reputation as a poet and a writer of stories and local-colour sketches. By 1832 both Catharine and Susanna were experienced writers and well-versed in relations with English publishers. They were eager to write about their new experiences in the northern colony. African Americans have played a vital role in the history and culture of their country since its founding. An important part of the curriculum at the Institute for African American Studies is devoted to creative research on the lives and work of prominent African Americans and to placing them within their cultural context. On this page you will find brief biographical sketches of several key figures in African American history.
    Benjamin Banneker
Benjamin Banneker's Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia Almanack and Epheremis, published during the years 1792-1797. He retired from tobacco farming to concentrate wholly upon his studies. He corresponded with Thomas Jefferson and urged Jefferson to work for the abolition of slavery.
    Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth, a nationally known speaker on human rights for slaves and women, was born Isabella Baumfree, a slave in Hurley, New York, and spoke only Dutch during her childhood. Sold and resold, denied her choice in husband, and treated cruelly by her masters, Truth ran away in 1826, leaving all but one of her children behind. After her freedom was bought for $25, she moved to New York City in 1829 and became a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. In 1853, she helped form a utopian community called "The Kingdom," at Sing Sing, New York, which was soon disbanded following the death and possible murder of its leader. Truth was implicated in the scandal but courageously fought the falsehoods aimed at her. After the death of her son, she took the name Sojourner Truth to signify her new role as traveler telling the truth about slavery. She set out on June 1, 1843, walking for miles in a northeasterly direction with 25 cents in her pocket, and rested only when she found lodging offered by either rich or poor. First she attended religious meetings, then began to hold meetings herself that would bring audience members to tears. As she logged mile after mile, her fame grew and her reputation preceded her. Truth's popularity was enhanced by her biography written by the abolitionist Olive Gilbert, with a preface written by William Lloyd Garrison. In 1864, she was invited to the White House, where President Abraham Lincoln personally received her. Later she served as a counselor for the National Freedman's Relief Association, retiring in 1875 to Battle Creek, Michigan.

    Abbot of St. Augustine's, Canterbury
Born: circa AD 635 probably in Libya Cyrenaica, North Africa Died: 9th January AD 710 at Canterbury, Kent He eventually rose to become the Abbot of Hiridanum (the Isle of Nisida), in the Bay of Naples and, it was while holding this post, that he is thought to have become acquainted with the Emperor Constans II. In AD 663, the Emperor spent the best part of a year in Naples while his troops tried to recover the Imperial lands of Southern Italy taken by the Lombards. Surely he would have become friends with many of the leading churchmen in the city? Adrian certainly served his Imperial Majesty twice in an ambassadorial role during subsequent years. It also seems highly probable that it was Constans who introduced Adrian to Pope Vitalian whilst visiting to Rome from his temporary Neapolitan abode. Adrian quickly became an esteemed advisor to the Pontiff and, three years later, he was offered the Archbishopric of Canterbury. He politely declined the Papal invitation in favour of

    My favourite royal in history:
    Eleanor of Aquitaine (~1122-1204)
Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine was an intelligent and emancipated woman living in the dark middle ages. Although it is a conventional rule that all ladies of high rank should be described as beautiful, all sources agree that Eleanor of Aquitaine really was beautiful. In addition, she was the richest heiress of France and became successively Queen of France and England.
her daughter Aenor married to his eldest son William X (1099-1137) in 1121. They had two daughters, Eleanor and Petronilla, and a son, William Aigret. Eleanor resembled both William IX and Dangereuse; she possessed the same intelligence, gaiety, restlessness and will power. The court of William IX was the centre of western European culture: the ducal family was entertained by jongleurs, storytellers and troubadours. Unlike most of her contemporaries, male and especially female, Eleanor was carefully educated and she was an excellent student. Eleanor's happy childhood ended with the subsequent deaths of her mother, her little brother and - in 1137 - her father.
The orphaned Eleanor was the richest heiress in France thus a marriage was arranged for her to its King, Louis VII (1121-1180). Louis had been brought up for an office in the church, but he had become heir to the French throne after the death of his elder brother. He was a weak, dull, grave and pious man and he and the lively Eleanor were ill matched. Louis never understood his young wife, but he appears to have adored her with a passionate admiration. It wasn't until 1145 that a daughter, Marie, was born. Meanwhile, Eleanor was eager to govern her own duchy, since she knew the troublesome Aquitainians better than anyone. However, Louis' councillor, the Abbot Sugar, resented female influence in governmental matters.
