Nikola Tesla -
the Years to Age 40
by Ron Kurtus (revised 9 March 2003) Nikola Tesla was a prolific inventor who emigrated to America, worked for Thomas Edison, and was later instrumental in the development of alternating current (AC) electricity. He was a genius who seemed short-changed in his quest for fame and fortune in science. Questions you may have about Tesla are:
  • At what stages in his life were his achievements made? What were his special characteristics? What lessons can we learn from his life, achievements and disappointments?
This lesson will try to answer those questions and explain about the early years of Tesla's life. See Nikola Tesla - The Years After Age 40 for the story of his later years.

Figure 1.This little American boy grew up to be one of the most influential statesman in the 20th century. He significantly influenced the lives of all Americans as well as people in other countries around the world. Here he was photographed with his elderly father at about 6 years of age (1888). His curls had been cut, but he was still dressed in a kilt suit. Many famous and not so famous men remember the clothing and hair styles they wore as boys. Not so many years ago it was all up to mom how junior was dressed. In some cases, especially in the late 19th and early 20th Century, moms in Europe and America let their imaginations run wild, choosing elaborate Fauntleroy and kilt outfits for their darling sons. The wife in affluent families rarely worked and thus she had a great deal of time, and in some cases the assistance of nannies and governesses, to see to the care and dressing of their children. The results were very little boys kept in dresses . Ever after they passed out of dresses, little and not little boys done up in dress-like

European Royalty: Boys' Clothes
Figure 1.I believe this photograph shows the Austrian Habsburg royal family about 1927. The Austian-Hungarian Empire was broken up in 1918-19, so the family no longer ruled. The oldest boy is Otto who was born in 1912. He would have been about 14 or 15 in the photograph. Note how the younger boys wore suits and hair styles similar to those of the Belgian princes. European and American Children's fashions, especially in the 19th and early 20th centuries were strongly influenced by the way royal families dressed their children. Queen Victoria was especially influential as so many of her children and grandchildren married into royal families throughout Europe. Kaiser Wilhelm II, for example, was the Queen's grandson. While the British House of Windsor was the most influential in this regard, other royal families also had great influence, at least in their own countries
British Royal families have always influenced fashion, but primarily adult fashion. Until the late 18th century there were no special styles for children, thus there were no fashions to influence. After styles for children developed, the fashions for the royal children were of considerable interest to the public. Queen Victoria and her children and grand children were closely followed by the British public. The young Queen chose a variety of styles for her children, but the two most common were sailor suits and kilts. These styles continued through the reign of Queen Elizabeth II who often dressed Prince Charles in kilts. Notably Diana does not seem to have chosen kilts for Prince William and Harry. Prince William, however, did wear a classic sailor suit and hat for his uncle's wedding.

Given the difficulties of travel and communication two centuries ago, it might easily be assumed that composers would know relatively little of other composers and other countries. Nothing could be farther from the truth! Travel by stage-coach may have been lengthy, and probably only for the well-to-do. But the many post-coach monuments still to be found in Germany, with their journey timings between towns precise down to one-eighth of an hour attest to the high degree of organization and reliability in this mode of travel. Music-making was highly prized by many of the princely and kingly courts, and leading musicians would often be financed for their journeys to bring back the latest styles and compositions. During the first half of the 1700s, German music adopted the Italian forms of the concerto and sonata, and with them, much of the Italian baroque "vocabulary" together with the latest Italian compositions. ITALY Many eminent composers of the baroque period, notably Handel for example, sojourned in Rome, and Corelli's influence was to spread itself throughout Europe. Rome was of course also featured on the Grand Tour, which the wealthy of Europe and especially England were enjoying in increasing numbers during the 1700s.

Cones Hollywood Biopics - Concluding Observations Analysis of this body of films, the Hollywood biopics, considers the geographic setting for such films, the occupations portrayed, time and sex biases, ideology, historical accuracy and the race, culture and ethnicity of the biopic subjects. In some instances, the conclusions of the author of the earlier work in this area (George Custin's Bio/Pics) are compared with those of the more contemporary study. In other instances, this later study places an emphasis on different issues which are critical in gaining an understanding of the Hollywood-based U.S. film industry. GeographyAs Custen points out, "[i]n their projection of biography onto a world map, Hollywood created a distorted view of accomplishment that sustained an image of history that . . . made it appear that entire domains of achievement had been invented by Americans . . . " Custen's study of biopics, which only surveyed the genre through the middle of the century, reveals that "[t]wo-thirds of all biopics are either about Americans or set in America . . . " and "[a]fter the United States, Europe appears to be the center of the biographical universe, with 22 percent of films set there." As Custen pointed out for his study, if " . . . the American and European totals (are combined) . . . 89 percent of all famous people are either American or European . . . Asia and Africa account for only 3 percent of all biopics (in Custen's study) . . . "

    European Royalty: Boys' Clothes
European and American Children's fashions, especially in the 19th and early 20th centuries were strongly influenced by the way royal families dressed their children. Queen Victoria was especially influential as so many of her children and grandchildren maired into royal familes throught Europe. Kaiser Wilhelm II, for example, was the Queen's grandson. While the British House of Windsor was the most influebntial in this regard, other royal families also had great influence, at least in their own countries
The geneology of European royalty is a huge under taking, given the large number of countries and principalities. Major changes have ocurred over time with countries created, dsmantleted, and reappearing. Some royal lines extend more than a millenium, others only a few generations. Royal lines can be looked up on the internet with a convenient search engine
    • Austria : The Hapburgs were one of the European ruling families with the longest histories. I have some informarin about the family of the last Hapsburg Emperor of Austria Hungary. The dress of the Austrian royal family appears to have influenced how wealthy families dressed boys within the Empire, but had no great influence on European styles in general or on the clothes of other social strata.
    • Belgium : The Belgium crown only dates from the 1830s. I have little information on how the first kings were dressed as boys. The two sons of Albert I after the turn of the century wore Fauntleroy suits and lacey blouses.
