Story of Farming
"Over 80 percent of mankind's diet is provided by the seeds of less than a dozen plant species." (26F, pg 2) Over the years man has invented new machines and techniques to increase the amount and variety of crop production. The following will be an overview of the history of farming. We will examine the major historical cultures, the development of the tractor, and the major types of agriculture practiced today. The roots of farming began in the areas of present day Turkey and the Middle East about 10,000 years ago. Two of the earliest settlements are known as Catal Hüyük and Jericho. Catal Hüyük had, by 6000 B.C., more then 1000 houses. It is at this place that we have discovered evidence of people taking wild grasses and using the seeds for food and planting for the next years food. These seeds are now known as cereals and make up a large percentage of the worlds food supply. (18F)
Jericho, like many early cities, was located around a consistent water source, a spring which produced over 1000 gallons of water every minute. (#16, pg. 6) Jericho consisted of about eight to ten acres on which it is estimated that two to three thousand people lived. These people were supported by farming of wheat, barley, peas, and lentils. Archeologist believe the earliest settlers in this area were a small group of hunter-gathers. Hunter - gathers would live off the land forging berry and edible plants, as well as hunting wild animals. These types of people lived in smaller groups because they had to be mobile to find more food. It was not until man began to plant and harvest crops that large permanent settlements could be established, like at Jericho.

Modern queen Noor reflects on her evolution from King Hussein's young bride to humanitarian activist By Erika Gonzalez, Rocky Mountain News
    March 18, 2003
Tall, blonde and tan, Queen Noor of Jordan looks more like a classic California girl than an envoy of peace from the Arab world. Yet, its Noor's unique mixture of American roots and Middle Eastern experience that perhaps make her the perfect ambassador. "My husband always encouraged me to share my perspective on a rather unique life journey and my perspective on two cultures that we both felt had so much more in common that was not well understood," says Noor, who married the late King Hussein in 1978. Noor has followed her late husband's advice, detailing her experience as Arab royalty in a new book, Leap of Faith: Memoirs of an Unexpected Life.

    (AD 620-AD 664)
Bishop of Essex Abbot of Lastingham Born: c. AD 620 in Northumberland Died: 26th October AD 664 at Lastingham, Yorkshire North Riding In AD 653, the mighty armies of King Penda of Mercia expanded their monarch's influence to the control of Middle Anglia (Leicestershire and parts of Lincoln and Derby), where his son Peada was appointed King. Soon afterward, the young king visited his neighbour, King Oswiu of Northumbria, at Walton (or Atwell or Wattbottle) and, as his new kingdom had already been considerably influenced by East Anglian Christianity, Peada agreed to be baptised in return for the hand of Oswiu's daughter, Alchflaed. Bishop Finan of Lindisfarne therefore welcomed the King and a number of his nobles into the Christian faith and Oswiu provided him with four priests to instruct his people further. One of these was St. Cedd. Within a year, Cedd returned home, having helped to convert much of Middle Anglia to Christianity. He travelled to Lindisfarne to confer with Bishop Finan, who promptly sent this impress young missionary out once more to evangelise the people of Essex, who were sorely in need of some spiritual guidance. King Oswiu, having imposed his overlordship there, had persuaded King Sigeberht Sanctus to adopt Christianity, in a general mobilization against Penda of Mercia. Cedd thus turned south again to spread the word of God amongst the East Saxons. He baptised many of the locals and built several churches - possibly Prittlewell and West Mersea amongst them - and is particularly noted for the foundation of monasteries at Ythanchester (Bradwell-on-Sea) and Tilaburg (East Tilbury).

A Thousand and One Nights meets Raise the Red Lantern in this tale of growing up among royal wives and concubines in what is now Iran. Set in a time when women of her class were cloistered, this princess' story is a rare account of day-to-day life in a sheik's palace, from a terrifying betrothal ceremony when its heroine was eight through a frustrating adolescence spent married to a bisexual philanderer to relations with the other women of the palace, in which rivalry and political jockeying ran rampant. What distinguishes Taj's memoirs from other Iranian court literature of the same time (the 30 years before World War I) is their honesty and thoughtfulness, says Yale scholar Abbas Amanat in his lengthy introduction. Amanat also sees the book as pivotal of its kind and the princess as one of the first "liberated" Iranian women, at least in her thoughts. Although perforce a subscriber to a rigid Islamic system, Taj saw and recorded a changing society, dissected the role of women in it, and questioned its conventions. Mary Ellen Sullivan

    Book Description
The life of Taj al-Saltana, daughter of the ruler of Iran, Naser al-Din Shah Qajar, epitomized the predicaments of her changing era. Overcoming her limited education within the harem walls, Taj chronicled a thirty-year span in the life of a generation that witnessed a shift from traditional order to revolutionary flux. It is as though she had chosen this moment to recall her personal historya tale filled with "wonder and anguish"in order to record a cultural and political leap, symbolic of her time, from the indulgent, sheltered, and often petty world of her father's harem to the puzzling and exposed, yet emotionally and intellectually challenging world of a new Iran.

Ephrem of Edessa, Deacon and Hymn-Writer
    10 June 373
Ephrem (or Ephren or Ephraim or Ephrain) of Edessa was a teacher, poet, orator, and defender of the Faith. (To English-speakers, the most familiar form of his name will be "Ephraim." It is the name of the younger son of Joseph, son of Jacob (see Genesis 41:52), and is thus the name of one of the largest of the twelve tribes of Israel.) Edessa (now Urfa), a city in modern Turkey about 100 kilometers from Antioch (now Antakya), was a an early center for the spread of Christian teaching in the East. It is said that in 325 he accompanied his bishop, James of Nisibis, to the Council of Nicea. Certainly his writings are an eloquent defense of the Nicene faith in the Deity of Jesus Christ. He countered the Gnostics' practice of spreading their message through popular songs by composing Christian songs and hymns of his own, with great effect. He is known to the Syrian church as "the harp of the Holy Spirit." Ephrem retired to a cave outside Edessa, where he lived in great simplicity and devoted himself to writing. He frequently went into the city to preach. During a famine in 372-3 he worked distributing food to the hungry, and organizing a sort of ambulance service for the sick. He worked long hours at this, and became exhausted and sick, and so died. Of his writings there remain 72 hymns, commentaries on the Old and New Testaments, and numerous sermons. One of his hymns follows:
