Janet Wallach conveys the accomplishments of this woman in a way that makes one want to read on just to see what she will do next. Conversely, Ms. Bell's personal life lacks the luster of her accomplishments. From the story, I wonder if her lonliness is because she is a woman far ahead of her time or just a bore. Nonetheless, the dichotomy presented in this book makes it good reading for those who look to biographys as a little window into someone's soul. This book is a good introduction to Gertrude Bell and discusses a few, limited issues surrounding the centuries of unrest in the middle east. It truly focuses on the life of Gertrude Bell and should not be used as a primer on mid-east issues.

Posted by Robin_NV ( mystykal@iname.com ) on Mon, May 13, 02 at 7:10 Have you ever read a biography that changed your opinion about someone, for better or worse? Recently a friend of mine received, "Heavier than Heaven", a biography of Kurt Cobain. I kind of missed that whole Seattle-scene movement at the time that it was changing the music world. I knew about Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love through various magazines but that was about the extent of it. Out of curiosity, I read the book. It was the first time that I was literally drawn into a biography. I felt like I was reliving his life. It was kind of like watching the Titanic; even though you know the ending, it was a shock when it happened anyway. Needless to say, it really stayed on my mind for days after. I bought two Nirvana CD's, and even bought a bio about Courtney Love for a different point of view. Reading both bio's, really listening to the music and learning about the grunge/alternative movement really changed my opinion about that particular music genre. Have you ever read a bio about someone that you ended up feeling differently about them after? Maybe you really admired them before reading it, but what you read changed that opinion. Maybe you didn't really like them, but ended up with admiration and respect at the end. Do you feel that it needs to be an autobiography to be believable?
