Welcome To Mr. Durso’s Class "Learning Through Biology" – BIOLOGY 1-2 Keep This Page in Your Notebook "…science education…should help students to develop the understandings and habits of mind they need to become compassionate human beings able to think for themselves and face life head on." (SCIENCE FOR ALL AMERICANS, AAAS) The most serious issues that we face are global and we must learn about them, and how to face them. Why do we study biology?
  • Understand the environment and the behavior of organisms so we can develop solutions to problems. Understand how living things depend on each other and the consequences of our actions, so that we don’t destroy species with the use of technology. Thinking scientifically can help us solve every-day problems. Knowing how to use technology can help us solve pressing global problems and gain new knowledge concerning issues like disease. None of this can occur unless the PUBLIC comes to understand science, math, and technology, and come to acquire scientific habits of mind.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT
GO TO COURSE SELECTION TO SEE GRADE 9 COURSES Getting ready for high school means thinking about what kind of program is right for you. You are working on your grades and work habits on a daily basis. Here are a few other things to consider:
  • All grade 9 students must choose 7 credits. Please have at least two "back-up" ELECTIVES in case you are closed out of your first choices.
TEACHERS MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR YOUR PLACEMENT BASED ON 8 TH GRADE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND WORK HABITS.
This information is sent on to the high school for your 9 th grade schedule.
PLEASE NOTE THAT WORK HABITS (HOMEWORK, ATTENDANCE, IN CLASS WORK AND ATTITUDE) ARE FACTORS IN YOUR PLACEMENT. Most importantly—think about your goals and what you are willing to produce. Tailor your schedule to you.

    a. Get to know your professors
    b. Attend class regularly
    c. Get involved in undergraduate research
    (among others)
    2. The Biology Department has several "Options" within the major. What exactly is an option?
An option is a focused area of classes that leads to some degree of specialization in a particular area 3. What is a "3 + 1 Option"? and give an example. A "3 + 1" option involves completing all university, college, and department core requirements in three years. The fourth year is spent in residency at a professional school. The academic credits earned during the fourth year transfer back to VT as "biology elective credit" and "free elective credit" to fulfill the credit requirements of the senior year. The student should be able to graduate in four years with the required 120 credits of course work. The Option in Clinical Laboratory Science is an example.

Kathie Nunley's Educator's Newsletter -June 2001 Edition- Layered Curriculum(tm)news and updates to Kathie Nunley's Site for Educators: http://help4teachers.com Free subscription available at http://help4teachers.com/newsletter.htm Section One: Teaching Tips Tip #1: As those of us teaching on the traditional calendar close another school year, it is time for reflection. While you are packing up the classroom, take some time to write down (1) the things that went really well this year and you want to continue (2) the things that were not good and you want to eliminate or avoid next year (3) the ideas and events you may have dreamed of or seen other teachers using that you would like to try next year. Take the time to actually write these thoughts down on paper. Put the paper in your "summer folder" (see below).
Tip #2: Rather than picking up your lesson plan book at the beginning of next school year, get it now before you leave for the summer. Use this book (or a manila file folder) as your summer ideas folder. When you think of an idea, jot it on a post-it note and put it in the folder.
