Welcome to the webpages for this level 3 module. An essential part of the module is a fieldcourse held prior to the beginning of the University session. Advance registration is required. Currently the fieldcourse is held at Kindrogan Field Centre (Scottish Field Studies Association). Tutorial Programme 2001
As there is a timetable clash with field excursions for the related Biological Conservation module, only four tutorial sessions are being held. (Fridays, 1.30-5.30pm, L209 or computing labs) Introduction, descriptive statistics, presentation. (JRMT, AJS) week 2 no class Pitfall trapping, small mammals, statistical methods. (JRMT) Vegetation and fungal sampling, more on statistical methods. (AJS) week 5 no class Freshwater sampling. Theory (A) Exercises (B) Training and projects (C) Studytime (D) Studypoints (E) Language of instruction Dutch Lecturer Dirk Inzé Semester second Department Co-lecturers Key Words cytoskeleton, cell cycle, intracellular transport Objectives The course "Plant Cell Biology" builds on and extends the knowledge of structural and functional aspects of the animal cell. Emphasis is put on plant specific processes which have been discribed and studied in classic model systems. The subjects are approached from a molecular viewpoint to encourage a better understanding of plant cellular structures and the associated processes. Along with the theoretical part, technological advancements that were crucial to push our knowledge of the cell forward are introduced. This coupling of theory and methodology should allow the student to get a deeper insight in the informative value of experimental approaches. Contents
  • The plant cytoskeleton
    • Molecular components of the cytoskeleton The cytoskeleton as a matrix for plant cell form and structure Transport functions of the cytoskeleton Cellular polarity : implementation, continuation, tip growth

Biology TEACHER During the second semester, students study units concerning genetics, evolution, plants, and animals. Additionally, at the end of the semester, in May, all Biology students must take a Core 40 Biology exam, which has been prepared by the Indiana Department of Education. Although all teachers are not necessarily discussing the same exact concepts daily in each class, the major concepts do not usually change very much from teacher to teacher. For web links to topics covered by teachers, current homework assignments, grades (if offered by the teacher), study guides and practice tests/quizzes, click on the teacher's name and you will be linked to his page.
