    Brief History and Enrollment

    Bemidji State University is a public comprehensive residential institution that was founded in 1919. Although the northern tier states are its primary service region, the university regularly enrolls nearly 5,000 students who originate from 44 states and 34 countries worldwide. (The university actively recruits students from around the world: Currently, 197 international students are enrolled.) The university occupies 89 acres in the lakes region of northern Minnesota. It has 19 academic and student services buildings, seven residence buildings, an off-campus Center for Research and Innovation, and a 240-acre private forest. The city of Bemidji is recognized as the first city on the Mississippi River and as one of the 110 best small cities in America. Besides being the county seat, Bemidji is the financial, cultural, and social hub of north central Minnesota. Academic Offerings
    Students who attend Bemidji State University pursue degrees in 24 disciplines that offer 45 majors and programs of study. In addition to traditional areas of study, such as professional education, liberal and creative studies, social and natural sciences, and business, accounting, and economics, the university offers courses and degrees in several unique areas, such as aquatic biology, environmental science, Indian studies, and selected languages, including Spanish, Chinese, and Ojibwe. The university offers master’s degrees in nine disciplines.

    EMBO's past and present
    EMBO started life in 1964 after leading scientists from the field had realised the importance of molecular biology for Europe. They felt the need to organise European resources in a more effective and international manner, because of the multi-disciplinary nature of molecular biology which implied that not all skills might be available in any one country. Therefore article S2 of the Statutes of the Organization states that EMBO was established to promote and encourage the development of molecular biology in Europe and the neighbouring countries. It was one of the elements in the Statutes also that the members of EMBO are elected by the existing membership. The initial programme of EMBO had a number of different elements:
    • postdoctoral fellowships in which the international character of the fellowships would be a distinguishing feature;

    BIOLOGY
    This department is one of Bridgewater's largest, with six full-time faculty and nearly 200 majors. The Biology Department offers introductory and advanced courses that prepare majors either for immediate employment, or to enter high-level studies at graduate or professional schools. The department also serves a service function in that all Bridgewater students must take at least one biology course; most take two or three.
    The Biology Department offers pre-professional programs in the areas of Medicine, Dentistry, Physical Therapy and Veterinary Science. These programs prepare interested students for graduate work in selected areas. The department also offers dual degree programs in forestry (with Duke University) and Veterinary Science (with Virginia Tech). Students should contact Dr. Lawson for more details.
    Rapidly expanding knowledge in cell biology, molecular genetics, and ecology assures bright futures for well-prepared biologists. With a baccalaureate degree, recent graduates have become life science teachers, laboratory technicians in industry, allied health, and government, environmental and conservation professionals, health officers, case workers, naturalists, pharmaceutical salespersons, and other varied occupations. With graduate or professional degrees, Bridgewater alumni are successful physicians, research scientists, veterinarians, environmental lawyers, dentists, physical therapists, genetic counselors, forestry and wildlife specialists, and other varied professions.
