The Biology Department of Fullerton College is striving to offer a variety of courses to meet the diverse needs of our student population. We have academically rigorous courses which satisfy the lower division requirements of Biology and pre-health profession majors. We also offer a variety of General Education courses which allow students to explore the world of biology, satisfy their intellectual curiosity, and are transferable to U.C. or C.S.U. Our goals are to provide our students (both major and non-majors) with the tools to become informed and productive members of society.

New Directions Short Course
From June 16-27, 2003 the IMA will host a two-week intensive short course designed to efficiently provide mathematicians the basic knowledge prerequisite to undertaking interdisciplinary research in the burgeoning field of mathematical biology at the cellular level. The course in Cellular Physiology will be taught by James Keener, Professor of Mathematics and Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering at University of Utah and author of the award-winning text Mathematical Physiology and Alexander Mogilner, Professor and Chancellor's Fellow at the Department of Mathematics and Center for Genetics and Development at University of California at Davis. Participants will receive full travel and lodging support during the workshop. Participants will gain an understanding the key mathematical issues in the topic, some familiarity with the relevant literature, ideas about problems to whose resolution they can contribute, and the basic knowledge necessary to initiate meaningful interdisciplinary collaborations in the field.

    The Traditional Course
    General Biology, a two-semester introductory course, is required of all students majoring in Biology, Psychology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, and Allied Health. Approximately 260 students enroll in the course annually, 15% of the typical first-year class. Almost 10% of students major in Biology, the second largest major at the university. The university offers four lecture sections of General Biology in fall and three in spring, with approximately thirty-five to forty students per section.
    Each lecture section meets three times a week for fifty minutes. Seven lab sections are offered in fall and six in spring, with approximately twenty students per section. Each lab section meets once a week to complete twelve three-hour modules per semester. Four different faculty teach the four lecture sections, and five faculty plus additional professional staff teach the labs.
    In the traditional format, General Biology lectures are taught in lecture format using a historic approach, with all faculty using the same syllabus. In-class technology consists of an overhead projector with transparencies. Labs consist of a series of modules, each of which is designed to be completed in the three-hour lab session. Students do "cookbook" type experiments in which they memorize information rather than apply specific scientific methodology to answer biological questions. Neither lectures nor labs use computer-based instructional materials or online databases, despite the integral use of computers in biological research today.

    The Traditional Course
    The learning objectives for General Psychology at UNM are:
    • Students will learn faculty knowledge and develop a conceptual understanding of important behavior principles, theories, and applications;
    • Students will understand principles of scientific and critical thinking; and
    • Students will benefit from using this information as a frame of reference in their own lives.
    The Redesigned Course The course redesign has four primary goals:
    • Increase student success through greater understanding and retention of course content through learner-centered, technology-based learning opportunities;
    • Decrease course failure rates;
    • Reduce in costs associated with teaching this course; and
    • Increase institutional student retention rates by increasing student success.
    In the redesigned course, the two large sections will be combined into one large section of 750. The smaller sections offered in the evening and weekends will be expanded from 75 students to 200 per section. Thus two full time faculty will be released each term from teaching this course. The course will be redesigned to incorporate one 50-minute lecture and one 50-minute computer lab section led by undergraduate teaching assistants (UGTAs) per week, supplemented by interactive hybrid Internet/CD-ROM activities, quizzes, and programmed self-instruction offered on a 24/7 schedule. UGTAs will be drawn from students who have shown a 90% or better mastery of the material in previous sections of General Psychology or who are upper-division honors students. They will receive weekly training on the topics for that week.

ARLINGTON, VA, APRIL 15, 2002 —The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has announced that the University of Maryland College of Life Sciences has joined the NSTA Institute to bring middle and high school science teachers a content-rich program with a concentration in biology and a planned concentration in chemistry via the Internet. Created specifically for the practicing science teacher, the 30-credit interdisciplinary graduate program gives teachers the opportunity to improve their science knowledge and immediately apply it to their classrooms. The Master of Life Sciences is the first online graduate program of its kind in the nation created specifically for working teachers. Non-degree-seeking students also may enroll for up to 12 credits. The University of Maryland program will be part of the NSTA Institute, NSTA’s professional development initiative to support quality teaching. The Institute links all of the Association’s professional development activities and is providing a framework for diverse programs, including online courses and site-based topical conferences and workshops. The popularity of Web-based professional development courses is fueling the growth of the Institute’s online portal. The University of Maryland is the third major provider to join the Institute. The other providers include the National Teachers Enhancement Network at Montana State University and the JASON Foundation for Education.

Natural Sciences Division
The biology curriculum structures learning based on the scientific process of discovery: observation, interpretation, experimentation, analysis, and the formation of new theory. Through exploration of recent developments in the broad range of biological fields, details are examined in the context of basic principles. The dynamic nature of biological science is experienced by participating in laboratory work and research projects that form the back-bone of the program. The curricular design offers many choices to students, allowing non-majors to explore any one field of biology in depth or to examine biology in the context of human issues having sociological, economic, and political importance, such as health care, bio-technology, and the environment. For new students who are considering biology courses, a number of options are available. Look for the * symbol, which designates those courses particularly appropriate for first-year or upperclass students new to the biology curriculum. Biology majors must take all foundation courses: BIOL 12, 13, 14 (unless specifically exempted by advanced placement along with departmental placement exams, which must be taken during Orientation of the first year) and the introductory laboratory sequence, BIOL 9, followed by either BIOL 10 or BIOL 11. The foundation courses may be taken in any sequence desired, but they must be completed within a span of the first four semesters. Advanced courses may be taken after finishing the prerequisite foundation course, so students can begin advanced courses while completing the introductory series.
