Biomedical Engineer
Who are biomedical engineers, and what do they do? Biomedical engineers build specialized equipment for treating certain health conditions, such as heart or lung problems. They use engineering methods to design equipment that helps in diagnosing and treating health conditions. They develop such equipment as cardiac pacemakers, heart-lung machines and ultrasonic imaging devices. They also design and test supportive health aids such as metal and plastic hips and artificial organs.
What kind of education and training is required?
  • You must complete high school or your GED and pass certain college-preparatory classes, including English, math and science.
  • Finish at least four years of college in a bachelor's degree program with a major in engineering, physics or a related biological science. You will have an easier time finding a job if you attend a program that is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
  • To be eligible for a wider range of jobs with more responsibilities and a higher salary, you might want to complete a one-year master’s degree program in biomedical engineering after you finish college. You can also get a PhD in biomedical engineering by completing a two-year doctorate program after you complete your master’s degree.

    New Horizons Of Nerve Repair: Biomedical Engineer Trips Up Proteins In Nerve Regeneration System
    It's sticky, it's a gel, it comes in a tube, but this is no greasy kids' stuff. Rather, it's a novel delivery system for peripheral nerve regeneration that could have implications for successful stem cell delivery and spinal cord repair. Shelly Sakiyama-Elbert, Ph.D., assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, has designed a system that employs a nerve guide tube filled with a gel containing growth factor proteins that stimulate nerve regeneration. Also part of the package are strategically placed sugars and peptides for binding in the gel matrix. The system has promoted peripheral nerve regeneration in preliminary rat studies. The clinical Gold Standard for peripheral nerve regeneration involves taking a nerve from a donor site on the injured person's body and sewing the donor nerve in between the two ends of the injured nerve. Though the nerve is dead, it provides a pathway that can guide the regeneration of the injured nerve. This is problematic because it creates an injury to be addressed at the donor site, and there is a limit to the amount of donor tissue you can use from a patient. Furthermore, there is no guarantee that the donated nerve will come to life in a new site. Another alternative is the use of cadaver nerves, which runs a risk of rejection.

    How do I become a Biomedical Engineer?
    Monash University has the greatest selection of biomedical engineering programs of any university in Australia.
    The Engineering and Science faculties offer four different BSc (Medical Science)/BE (Engine-ering) double degree programs for those wishing to enter the profession of Biomedical Engineering.
    The first of these BSc/BE double degrees combines a BSc (Physi-ology) with a BE in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering and is intended for engineers with an interest in medical instrumentation, medical imaging, medical informatics and microprocessor-based medical devices.
    The second combines a BSc (Material Science and Physiology) with a BE in Materials Engineering, which is intended for engineers interested in biomaterials, implantable devices and material aspects of other medical technologies.
    The third of these degrees combines a BSc (Physiology or Anatomy) with a BE in Mechanical Engineering. This combination will be of interest to biomechanical engineers, rehabilitation engineers and is relevant to understanding the mechanical aspects of human physiological systems.
    The fourth of these degrees combines a BSc (Biochemistry) with a BE in Chemical Engineering. This combination is intended to prepare engineers for a career in the new area of Biotechnology.

The distribution of responsibilities will cover clinical, research, and teaching. This is a regular position and is funded by the School of Medicine and the North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Responsibilities include supervising 2 full-time assistants and working with other PET scientists in the WFU PET Research Core Facility to facilitate collaborative PET research for the School of Medicine and its academic affiliates. In addition, the incumbent will supervise quality control for the research and clinical PET scanners and will assume responsibility for decisions regarding the acquisition and testing of new equipment. The incumbent will be an integral member of the Biomedical Engineering graduate program, which includes a medical physics track. This will allow full access to BME graduate students and all facilities and privileges of the BME faculty. Responsibilities include teaching in the BME curriculum and mentoring students as part of their committees or as their research advisor. A graduate degree in medical physics, biomedical engineering or a related field and a strong interest in research are essential. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with education and experience. Although PET experience is desirable, it is not required, and this position provides an outstanding opportunity for a qualified medical physicist or biomedical engineer in a related area to join the exciting field of PET.

    Biomedical Engineer Tests Nanoparticles As Cancer Detection in Emory/Georgia Tech Research
    Biomedical engineer Shuming Nie is testing the use of nanoparticles called quantum dots to improve clinical diagnostic tests for the early detection of cancer. The tiny particles glow and act as markers on cells and genes, potentially giving scientists the ability to rapidly analyze biopsy tissue from cancer patients so that doctors can provide the most effective therapy available. Nie, a chemist by training, is an associate professor in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University and director of cancer nanotechnology at Emory's Winship Cancer Institute. His research focuses on the field of nanotechnolgy, in which scientists build devices and materials one atom or molecule at a time, creating structures that take on new properties by virtue of their miniature size. The basic building block of nanotechnology is a nanoparticle, and a nanometer is one-billionth of a meter, or about 100,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair.
