Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top By combining biology and medicine with engineering, biomedical engineers develop devices and procedures that solve medical and health-related problems. Many do research, along with life scientists, chemists, and medical scientists, on the engineering aspects of the biological systems of humans and animals. Biomedical engineers also design devices used in various medical procedures, such as the computers used to analyze blood or the laser systems used in corrective eye surgery. They develop artificial organs, imaging systems such as ultrasound, and devices for automating insulin injections or controlling body functions. Most engineers in this specialty require a sound background in one of the more basic engineering specialties, such as mechanical or electronics engineering, in addition to specialized biomedical training. Some specialties within biomedical engineering include biomaterials, biomechanics, medical imaging, rehabilitation, and orthopedic engineering.
Employment About this section Back to Top Biomedical engineers held about 7,200 jobs in 2000. Manufacturing industries employed 30 percent of all biomedical engineers, primarily in the medical instruments and supplies industries. Many others worked for health services. Some also worked on a contract basis for government agencies or as independent consultants.

What is a bioengineer? What do they do? Who do they work with? I will share the exciting range of jobs and projects that today's bioengineer can be involved in, including tissue engineering, gene therapy, medical imaging, biomechanics, the development of biomaterials, and designing prosthetic devices. I will bring in examples of things we are designing for biology and medical fields that might include new artificial joints, devices to restore hearing for deaf people, bone marrow transplant methods, new walkers to help older people avoid falls and stay mobile, or bio-imaging systems used to help us understand heart problems.

2002 David Dewhurst Award

The 2003 DDA Award was awarded to Dr Barry Seeger in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the profession of Rehabilitation Engineering. As well as being a past member of the Biomedical College and past Chairman of the National Committee on Engineering Design, Dr Seeger was the founding director of the internationally recognised Regency Park Rehabilitation Engineering Centre in SA. He was involved in the establishment of the only Australian NATA registered testing laboratory dedicated to asssistive technology equipment and played a major role in the establishment of the Australian Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology Association (ARATA).

Health care technology assessment and the biomedical engineer - where do we go from here?
Since the IFMBE established a Division for Health Care Technology Assessment (DHCTA) in 1991, there has been an extremely rapid development in the field. The pressure on decision makers in health care is steadily increasing due to the innovation rate which contributes to effectiveness in health care. Now, comfortable, patient-friendly technologies give rise to demands from patients whose suffering we could not so easily alleviate previously. Consequently, the increasing demands are in troublesome conflict with the limited resources. Various measures are taken to handle the situation in different countries. Over the years, methods of technology assessment have been refined. Several countries have organised systematic health technology assessment to find ways of allocating resources based on knowledge and reasoning and not on random choice. What is the role of engineers in this process? What has the IFMBE DHCTA done and what is the impact? Where should we go in the future? The reason for raising these questions is that biomedical engineers are stil much too invisible in HCTA and policy making. Let us have a quick look at the history. Dealing with the impact of technology in a society needs a broad approach encompassing social and economic consequences. In 1972 the US Congress established an Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) which published a report on HCTA in 1976.

Students choose the biomedical engineering field to be of service to people; for the excitement of working with living systems; and to apply advanced technology to the complex problems of medical care. The biomedical engineer is a health care professional, a group which includes physicians, nurses, and technicians. Biomedical engineers may be called upon to design instruments and devices, to bring together knowledge from many sources to develop new procedures, or to carry out research to acquire knowledge needed to solve new problems. Specific Activities
Examples of work done by biomedical engineers include: designing and constructing cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators, artificial kidneys, blood oxygenators, hearts, blood vessels, joints, arms, and legs. designing computer systems to monitor patients during surgery or in intensive care, or to monitor healthy persons in unusual environments, such as astronauts in space or underwater divers at great depth.
