Geographic Theme
The world can be divided into units, or parts, that have similar plants, animals, and climates. These units are known as biomes. Learning about the varied habitats will help us understand why and how civilization prospered in particular areas of the world.
Overview
Provide an introduction into global thinking. Visualize the world as a whole. Recognize how environments can impact the development of civilization.
Materials
  • Thematic Unit, Ecology, by Mary Ellen Sterling
  • Biomes, Mark Twain Media, Inc., Publishers
  • Resource books on Biomes
  • paper plates
  • construction paper
  • scissors
  • crayons

Managing the Environment Biomes The human mind seems to require that we group things into categories. Many of the things we group into categories are continuous, not discrete, such as color, temperature, moisture levels. Communities of species are the same way. Sometimes we can see discrete boundaries on the landscape, such as the edge of a lake where it meets the shore. More often than not, however, changes are gradual. So, when we talk about biomes, keep in mind that they are a human construction to help us understand the distribution of organisms on the face of the earth, but not actually "real." Also, each investigator has a slightly different way of naming and categorizing biomes. If you look at five different books that describe biomes, you will see five different treatments. The important thing is to understand the variation and be able to describe the major features of each type. Biomes
Q: Where can I find out about biomes such as the rain forest and tundra? A : Hi, Many sources on the Internet and the library can tell you about different biomes, including the climate, animals, and plants of each type of region. In order to find biome sites on the Web, it is good to search on specific types of biomes. For instance, if you are looking for information on the tundra, you should use keywords that include tundra and biome: On Alta Vista ( http://altavista.digital.com ), you would type the search term: +tundra +biome On HotBot ( http://www.hotbot.com ) , you would type the search term: tundra biome and then, you would select the option for "all the words" in the "look for" box. A biome is a large distinctive complex of plant communities created and maintained by climate. How many biomes are there? A recent (1999) study concludes that there are 150 different "ecoregions" in North America alone. But I shall cast my lot with the "lumpers" rather than the "splitters" and lump these into 8 biomes

Land Biomes
Dateline: 06/12/97 Biomes are the world's major habitats. These habitats are identified by the vegetation and animals that populate them. The location of each biome is determined by the regional climate. Tropical rain forests are characterized by dense vegetation, seasonally warm temperatures, and abundant rainfall. The animals that dwell here depend on trees for housing and food. Some examples are monkeys, bats, frogs, and insects. Savannas are open grasslands with very few trees. There's not much rain, so the climate is mostly dry. Inhabitants include lions, elephants, zebras, and antelope. Deserts are typically dry areas that experience extremely small amounts of rainfall. They can be either cold or hot. Vegetation includes shrubs and cactus plants. Animals include birds and rodents. Snakes, lizards, and other reptiles survive the severe temperatures by hunting at night and making their homes underground.

Taiga or Boreal Forest
Introduction. The taiga or boreal forest exists as a nearly continuous belt of coniferous trees across North America and Eurasia. Overlying formerly glaciated areas and areas of patchy permafrost on both continents, the forest is mosaic of successional and subclimax plant communities sensitive to varying environmental conditions. Taiga is the Russian name for this forest which covers so much of that country. However, the term is used in North America as well. Climate: The taiga corresponds with regions of subarctic and cold continental climate (Koeppen's Dfc, Dfd, and Dwd climate types). Long, severe winters (up to six months with mean temperatures below freezing) and short summers (50 to 100 frost-free days) are characteristic, as is a wide range of temperatures between the lows of winter and highs of summer. For example, Verkhoyansk, Russia, has recorded extremes of minus 90 ° Fand plus 90 ° F. Mean annual precipitation is 15 to 20 inches, but low evaporation rates make this a humid climate. Vegetation: Needleleaf, coniferous (gymnosperm) trees are the dominant plants of the taiga biome. A very few species in four main genera are found: the evergreen

Introduction to Biogeography and Ecology
(k) Characteristics of the Earth's Terrestrial Biomes Introduction Many places on Earth share similar climatic conditions despite being found in geographically different areas. As a result of natural selection , comparable ecosystems have developed in these separated areas. Scientists call these major ecosystem types biomes . The geographical distribution (and productivity ) of the various biomes is controlled primarily by the climatic variables precipitation and temperature . The map in Figure 9k-1 describes the geographical locations of the eight major biomes of the world. Because of its scale, this map ignores the many community variations that are present within each biome category. Figure 9k-1 Distribution of the Earth's eight major terrestrial biomes. Eureka! A New Biome!
a Webquest for Science and Language at Sullivan Middle School
Introduction:
A biome is a large region that has a distinct climate and combination of plants and animals. The earth itself can be considered to be one large biome. The earth is divided into two major biome types. They are the land and water biomes. Many biologists then classify land biomes into six groups. They are the tundra, coniferous forest, deciduous forest, grassland, desert, and rain forest. The water biomes cover most of the earth's surface. There are two major types of water biomes: marine and freshwater biomes.
The Task:
On this journey your ship has just "discovered" a new type of biome. Since it is your job to report your findings back to the Academy of Sciences and to the king, you will need to write an informational paper describing your observations. In your report you should include the following factual information for the Academy of Sciences:
  • identify where the biome is found
  • identify the biome's climate type
  • identify the major types of plants present in the biome
  • identify the major types of animals present in the biome
  • include any other facts about your biome that are important or interesting
  • diagram a food web for this biome
In your report for the Crown you should also discuss the possibilities for future exploitation of the biome by humans.

BIOMES OF THE WORLD
Ms. Wayne
Science
Scientists have classified areas with similar climates, plants, and animals into divisions called biomes. Because biomes divisions are merely a system to help scientists describe the natural world, not all scientists agree on the kinds and numbers of biomes. However, most scientists accepts at least six land biomes and two water biomes. The major land biomes are tundra, coniferous forest, deciduous forest, tropical rain forest, grassland, and desert. The two water biomes are the marine, or ocean biomes and the freshwater biome. List the eight major biomes, plus any additional ones you may find in a chart. List examples of plants, animals and type of climate. FOR STUDENT ACTIVITY GO TO: STUDENT'S ACTIVITY After you have completed the student's activity you must do the Student's Project.
