Science Technicians
Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Science technicians in production jobs often work in 8-hour shifts around the clock. Job opportunities are expected to be best for qualified graduates of science technician training programs or applied science technology programs.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Science technicians use the principles and theories of science and mathematics to solve problems in research and development and to help invent and improve products and processes. However, their jobs are more practically oriented than those of scientists. Technicians set up, operate, and maintain laboratory instruments, monitor experiments, make observations, calculate and record results, and often develop conclusions. They must keep detailed logs of all their work-related activities. Those who work in production monitor manufacturing processes and may be involved in ensuring quality by testing products for proper proportions of ingredients, purity, or for strength and durability. As laboratory instrumentation and procedures have become more complex in recent years, the role of science technicians in research and development has expanded. In addition to performing routine tasks, many technicians also develop and adapt laboratory procedures to achieve the best results, interpret data, and devise solutions to problems, under the direction of scientists. Moreover, technicians must master the laboratory equipment so that they can adjust settings when necessary and recognize when equipment is malfunctioning.

Access Excellence: About Biotech Launched in 1993, Access Excellence (AE) aims to provide school biology teachers with access to sources of new scientific information via the Internet. "About Biotech", part of the AE web site, explores: the history of biotechnology, issues surrounding the ethics of biotech research, real world applications of biotechnology and careers advice for young people hoping to pursue job opportunities. In 1999 Genetech donated the Access Excellence website to the National Health Museum. Career development Science - Study and teaching - Aids and devices Biotechnology Bioethics ... Agricultural biotechnology and societal decision-making: the role of risk analysis ‘Agricultural biotechnology and societal decision-making: the role of risk analysis’ is an online article by Jeffrey D. Wolt and Robert K. D. Peterson of Dow Agrosciences, which was published in AgBioForum 3 (1), 39-46, 2000. The authors discuss the role of risk analysis in public policy decision-making, specifically as it relates to the framework for characterizing, communicating, and managing the risks imposed by agricultural biotechnology. The article is available in pdf format for which adobe reader is required. AgBioForum is financed by the Illinois Missouri Biotechnology Alliance and is edited at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
