Repository: Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections, Cornell University Library Abstract: Materials relating to the organization's history and ongoing business, including minutes of meetings, membership rosters, announcements, and programs of annual meetings, photographs, news clippings, correspondence and special projects such as the New York State Avian Records Committee, and the New York State Bird Book Committee. ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY From its first organizational meeting in Rochester in 1946, the Federation served as a mechanism for birders in the state to share their ideas and experiences and to promote research, education, and conservation. The Federation numbered more than forty bird clubs in 1992, with a combined membership of over twenty thousand birders. It is governed by a council of delegates representing those clubs. Individual memberships are also accepted. Many 20th century ornithologists and prominent birders in New York State have been associated with the Federation, serving as club officers and contributing to "The Kingbird" such as Peter Paul Kellogg, Arthur A. Allen, Winston Brockner, Eugene Eisenmann, and Sally Hoyt Spofford.

Bird Clubs of Virginia is a non-profit federation of Virginia clubs. Our mission is:
  • To initiate educational and aviary management programs in cooperation with the member clubs comprising and supporting BCV.
  • To encourage the sharing of information, educational activity, and support of avicultural, conservation and veterinary research.
  • To pursue passive legislative goals relating to the management of exotic birds and aviaries at national, state and local levels.
  • To enhance the status and management of member clubs.
  • To support bona fide avian research projects in or out of the state from proceeds of our state conventions, seminars, and other resources.
  • To cooperate with like federations in other states in matters of mutual interest.

    N early twenty years ago, in January, 1985, bird enthusiasts met in Hampton, Virginia to plan a state federation. The result of the meeting was the formation of Bird Clubs of Virginia, founder Dick Ivy's brainchild. Five months later, BCV hosted its first convention in Hampton, VA. B ird Clubs of Virginia's mission is to support avian research and education. Since 1987, BCV has been donating to worthwhile research projects from its Carole Wheeler Memorial Fund. The fund, which receives donations from BCV's member clubs, its conventions and other sources, was established to honor Carole Wheeler and her efforts to promote both aviculture and research in Virginia and nationally. To date, over $58,000 has been awarded for avian research studies, education and conservation projects. Recipients have included:
    • Dr. Keven Flammer
      • Antibiotic Dosage Research
      • Doxycycline-medicated mash diet to treat chlamydiosis
      • Use of Baytril and Vibramycin in Poicephalus parrots
      • Establish drug dosages for fungal and bacterial infections
      • Establish safe and effective drug doses in specific pet bird species
      • Determine if the injectable formulation of Baytril (Enrofloxacin) can be used to medicate drinking water
